Hello, everyone! Welcome to Thai Holiday Words. I'm Jay, and today we are going to do The Rains Retreat. You can call this period either The Rains Retreat Period or Vassa or Buddhist Lent. They are the same thing but it depends on how you want to call them.
The Rains Retreat is actually 3 months retreat for Thai month. Do you want to know more about this? Okay, let's begin!
1. เทศกาลเข้าพรรษา (thêet-sà-gaan khâo phan-săa) “Rain's Retreat”
เทศกาลเข้าพรรษามีระยะเวลาประมาณ 3 เดือนในช่วงหน้าฝน ตั้งแต่เดือนกรกฎาคมจนถึงเดือนตุลาคม (thêet-sà-gaan khâo phan-săa mii rá-yá wee-laa bprà-maan săam duuean nai chûuang nâa fŏn dtâng-dtàae duuean gà-rá-gà-daa-khom jon thǔeng duuean dtù-laa-khom) “The Rain's Retreat lasts for three months in rainy season, during July until October.”
2. วันเข้าพรรษา (wan khâo phan-săa) “Rain-Entry Day”
วันเข้าพรรษาคือวันแรกของเทศกาลเข้าพรรษา (wan khâo phan-săa khuue wan râaek khǎawng thêet-sà-gaan khâo phan-săa) “The Rain-Entry Day is the first day of the Rain's Retreat period.”
3. ฤดูฝน (rùe-duu fŏn) “rainy season”
เทศกาลเข้าพรรษาอยู่ในช่วงฤดูฝน (thêet-sà-gaan khâo phan-săa yùu nai chûuang rùe-duu fŏn) “The Rain's Retreat is during the rainy season.”
4. ภิกษุ (phík-sù) “Buddhist monk”
ในการที่จะบวชเป็นพระภิกษุสงฆ์ คน ๆ นั้นจะต้องอายุ 20 ปีหรือมากกว่า (nai gaan thîi jà bùuat bpen phrá phík-sù-sŏng khon khon nán jà dtâwng aa-yú yîi-sìp bpii rǔue mâak gwàa) “In order to be ordained as a Buddhist monk, the person has to be 20 years old or older.”
5. สามเณร (săam-má-neen) “novice”
บุคคลที่อายุต่ำกว่า 20 ปี ยังไม่สามารถบวชเป็นพระภิกษุสงฆ์ได้ แต่สามารถบวชเป็นสามเณรได้ (bùk-khon thîi aa-yú dtàm gwàa yîi-sìp bpii yang mâi săa-mâat bùuat bpen phrá phík-sù-sŏng dâai dtàae săa-mâat bùuat bpen săam-má-neen dâai) “A person who is younger than 20 years old cannot be ordained as a monk, but can be ordained as a novice.”
