Hello, everyone! Welcome back to Thai Holiday Words with me, Jay. Today we are going to do Songkran Day, or Water Festival. Whoo! Ok, lets begin!
1. เทศกาลสงกรานต์ (thêet-sà-gaan sŏng-graan) “Songkran Festival”
เทศกาลสงกรานต์จัดขึ้นระหว่างวันที่ 13 ถึง 15 เมษายนของทุกปี (thêet-sà-gaan sŏng-graan jàt khûen rá-wàang wan thîi sìp săam thǔeng sìp hâa mee-săa-yon khǎawng thúk bpii) “Songkran Festival is between 13 to 15 April of every year.”
So let me tell you more about Songkran Festival, actually, Songkran Festival is considered to be the traditional Thailand's New Year before we changed it to the first of January. During 13 to 15 April of every year, you're allowed to splash water to anyone at all, on street. I mean there are a lot of foreigners or even Thais that love this festival so much. Some foreigners just come to Thailand to participate in this festival.
2. ขบวนแห่ (khà-buuan hàe) “Parade”
ในบางจังหวัดของประเทศไทย เช่น จังหวัดเชียงใหม่ จะมีขบวนแห่ไปรอบๆ เมือง (nai baang jang-wàt khǎawng bprà-thêet thai chên jang-wàt chiiang-mài jà mii khà-buuan hàe bpai râawp râawp muueang) “In some provinces of Thailand, such as Chiang Mai, there will be Songkran parade going around the city.”
3. ปืนฉีดน้ำ (bpuuen chìit nám) “Water gun”
คนไทยนิยมใช้ปืนฉีดน้ำเพื่อเล่นน้ำวันสงกรานต์ (khon-thai ní-yom chái bpuuen chìit nám phûuea lên nám wan sŏng-graan) “Thai people use water guns for water fight on Songkran day.”
You can use anything to splash water on other people. It doesn't need to be a water gun. I have seen people using a water hose to splash water to their friends, or a bucket is also alright. So, anything at all that you can think of.
4. สรงน้ำพระ (sŏng nám phrá) “Bathe the Buddha statue”
คนจะไปวัดเพื่อไปทำบุญและสรงน้ำพระในวันสงกรานต์ (khon jà bpai wát phûuea bpai tam bun láae sŏng nám phrá nai wan sŏng-graan) “On Songkran day, people go to the temple to make merit and also bathe the Buddha statue.”
5. คำอวยพร (kham uuai phaawn) “Blessing”
ในวันสงกรานต์ เด็กๆ จะรดน้ำดำหัวผู้ใหญ่ และรับคำอวยพรวันสงกรานต์ (Nı wạn sŏng-graan, dèk dèk jà rót nám dam hŭua phûu yài láae ráp kham uuai phaawn wan sŏng-graan) “On Songkran day, children will pour water over the elderly's hand and receive their blessing.”
And that is the end of today's Thai Holiday Words. Ok, if you happen to be in Thailand during 13 to 15 April, please don't forget to be a part of this awesome festival. You will love it!
