INTRODUCTION
John: Words Referring to People, part 1
John: Hi everyone, and welcome back to ThaiPod101.com. I'm John.
Jay: And I'm Jay!
John: This is Must-know Thai Slang Words and Phrases, Season 1, Lesson 1. In this lesson, you'll learn words for referring to people. These words are used to refer to certain groups of people or characteristics of people.
SLANG EXPRESSIONS
John: The expressions you will be learning in this lesson are...
Jay: สาวก (săa-wók)
Jay: เด็กแนว (dèk naaeo)
Jay: กะเทย (gà-thooei)
Jay: ชะนี (chá-nii)
John: Jay, what's our first expression?
Jay: สาวก (săa-wók)
John: This literally means "disciples," but when it's used as a slang expression, it means "being a fan of something."
Jay: [SLOW] สาวก [NORMAL] สาวก
John: Listeners, please repeat.
Jay: สาวก
[pause - 5 sec.]
John: Use this expression when someone is a hardcore fan of something or someone.
John: Now, let's hear an example sentence.
Jay: [NORMAL] ฉันเป็นสาวกแฮรี่พอตเตอร์ [SLOW] ฉันเป็นสาวกแฮรี่พอตเตอร์
John: "I am a Harry Potter fan."
Jay: [NORMAL] ฉันเป็นสาวกแฮรี่พอตเตอร์
John: Okay, what's the next expression?
Jay: เด็กแนว (dèk naaeo)
John: This literally means "kid with style," but when it's used as a slang expression, it means "a teenager who dresses with their own unique style, like a hipster."
Jay: [SLOW] เด็กแนว [NORMAL] เด็กแนว
John: Listeners, please repeat.
Jay: เด็กแนว
[pause - 5 sec.]
John: In this slang expression…
Jay: naaeo
John: ...means "style." Use this expression when describing someone with their own style. Normally, these kinds of people have a very unique mindset and way of dressing. It’s very close to “hipster.”
John: Now, let's hear an example sentence.
Jay: [NORMAL] เพื่อนของฉันเป็นเด็กแนว [SLOW] เพื่อนของฉันเป็นเด็กแนว
John: "My friend is a hipster."
Jay: [NORMAL] เพื่อนของฉันเป็นเด็กแนว
John: Okay, what's our next expression?
Jay: กะเทย (gà-thooei)
John: This literally means "ladyboy."
Jay: [SLOW] กะเทย [NORMAL] กะเทย
John: Listeners, please repeat.
Jay: กะเทย
[pause - 5 sec.]
John: Use this expression when you want to describe someone as a ladyboy. In Thailand, these are men who dress and act like women.
John: Now, let's hear an example sentence.
Jay: [NORMAL] ถ้าไปแถวสีลมจะเจอกะเทยเยอะมาก [SLOW] ถ้าไปแถวสีลมจะเจอกะเทยเยอะมาก
John: "If you go to Silom, you will find many ladyboys there."
Jay: [NORMAL] ถ้าไปแถวสีลมจะเจอกะเทยเยอะมาก
John: Okay, what's the last expression?
Jay: ชะนี (chá-nii)
John: This literally means "gibbons," but when it's used as a slang expression, it means "a girl, a woman."
Jay: [SLOW] ชะนี [NORMAL] ชะนี
John: Listeners, please repeat.
Jay: ชะนี
[pause - 5 sec.]
John: Use this expression to refer to a female friend when talking within a group of friends. Referring to a third person by this word is not considered rude in Thailand. It’s more of an inside joke that is used only among mostly women or ladyboys. The reason why girls or women are being referred to as "gibbons" is because gibbons make the sound…
Jay: "phua phua,"
John: ...which means "husband" in Thai. So people say that the gibbon is trying to call her husband, and that's why girls and women can be referred to as "gibbons." Never use it to refer to yourself.
John: Now, let's hear an example sentence.
Jay: [NORMAL] กะเทยส่วนใหญ่ชอบเรียกผู้หญิงว่าชะนี [SLOW] กะเทยส่วนใหญ่ชอบเรียกผู้หญิงว่าชะนี
John: Most ladyboys call women "Cha-nee."
Jay: [NORMAL] กะเทยส่วนใหญ่ชอบเรียกผู้หญิงว่าชะนี
QUIZ
John: Okay listeners, are you ready to be quizzed on the expressions you just learned? I'll describe four situations, and you choose the correct expression. Are you ready?
John: You want to be unique and dress differently than others.
[pause - 5 sec.]
Jay: เด็กแนว
John: "a teenager who dresses with his/her own unique style, a hipster"
John: You like this singer a lot so you go to every concert and have all their CDs.
[pause - 5 sec.]
