INTRODUCTION
John: Verbs about Bad Actions
John: Hi everyone, and welcome back to ThaiPod101.com. I'm John.
Jay: And I'm Jay!
John: This is Must-know Thai Slang Words and Phrases, Season 1, Lesson 18. In this lesson, you'll learn verbs about bad actions.
John: There are a few expressions referring to bad actions and they criticize the people who do them. Some of these are strong words and they might offend people. Use them carefully.
SLANG EXPRESSIONS
John: The expressions you will be learning in this lesson are:
Jay: เผางาน (phăo ngaan)
Jay: แถ (thăae)
Jay: ต้ม (dtôm)
Jay: วีนแตก (wiin dtàaek )
John: Jay, what's our first expression?
Jay: เผางาน (phăo ngaan)
John: This literally means "burn the work," but when it's used as a slang expression, it means "to get work over with by doing it carelessly, resulting in work that tends to be sloppy and mediocre."
Jay: [SLOW] เผางาน [NORMAL] เผางาน
John: Listeners, please repeat.
Jay: เผางาน
[pause - 5 sec.]
John: This expression is used to say the process of burning is fast, but the outcome is unpleasant. Thus, the slang means trying to finish work fast, and most likely, the work will not be up to standards. It’s used often when you don't have time to do the work.
John: Now, let's hear an example sentence.
Jay: [NORMAL] เขาเผางานมาส่งให้มันจบๆไป [SLOW] เขาเผางานมาส่งให้มันจบๆไป
John: "He handed in a mediocre job, just to get it over with."
Jay: [NORMAL] เขาเผางานมาส่งให้มันจบๆไป
John: Okay, what's the next expression?
Jay: แถ (thăae)
John: This literally means "make things flat or even," but when it's used as a slang expression, it means "to talk or write aimlessly, to ramble, to indirectly lie, dance around the subject or beat around the bush."
Jay: [SLOW] แถ [NORMAL] แถ
John: Listeners, please repeat.
Jay: แถ
[pause - 5 sec.]
John: Use this expression to describe someone who is beating around the bush or trying to dodge the question. Be careful when you use this word, as it can be considered a bit accusatory.
John: Now, let's hear an example sentence.
Jay: [NORMAL] เลิกแถได้แล้ว [SLOW] เลิกแถได้แล้ว
John: "Quit your rambling!"
Jay: [NORMAL] เลิกแถได้แล้ว
John: Okay, what's our next expression?
Jay: ต้ม (dtôm)
John: This literally means "boil," but when it's used as a slang expression, it means "to trick someone (into believing something), to deceive, or to cheat (someone)."
Jay: [SLOW] ต้ม [NORMAL] ต้ม
John: Listeners, please repeat.
Jay: ต้ม
[pause - 5 sec.]
John: Use this expression when you are tricking or cheating someone.
John: Now, let's hear an example sentence.
Jay: [NORMAL] เธอถูกเขาต้มแล้ว [SLOW] เธอถูกเขาต้มแล้ว
John: "You were tricked by him."
Jay: [NORMAL] เธอถูกเขาต้มแล้ว
John: Okay, what's the last expression?
Jay: วีนแตก (wiin dtàaek )
John: This literally means "shrieking," but when it's used as a slang expression, it means "to throw a tantrum."
Jay: [SLOW] วีนแตก [NORMAL] วีนแตก
John: Listeners, please repeat.
Jay: วีนแตก
[pause - 5 sec.]
John: Use this expression to refer to someone, usually a woman, who seems to be angry to the point that they cannot control their temper.
John: Now, let's hear an example sentence.
Jay: [NORMAL] เธอชอบวีนแตกเวลาไม่ได้ดั่งใจ [SLOW] เธอชอบวีนแตกเวลาไม่ได้ดั่งใจ
John: "She throws a tantrum when she can't have her own way. "
Jay: [NORMAL] เธอชอบวีนแตกเวลาไม่ได้ดั่งใจ

[pause - 5 sec.]
Jay: แถ
John: "to talk or write aimlessly, to ramble, to indirectly lie, dance around the subject, or beat around the bush"
John: When you try to do your job quickly just for the sake of finishing it.
[pause - 5 sec.]
