INTRODUCTION
John: Expressions Using Words Related to Relationships
John: Hi everyone, and welcome back to ThaiPod101.com. I'm John.
Jay: And I'm Jay!
John: This is Must-know Thai Slang Words and Phrases, Season 1, Lesson 19. In this lesson, you'll learn expressions using words related to relationships.
John: Relationships are a sensitive topic so rather than saying it directly, these slang terms are used instead.
SLANG EXPRESSIONS
John: The expressions you will be learning in this lesson are...
Jay: อ่อย (àuy)
Jay: ขึ้นคาน ( khûen-khaan)
Jay: กิ๊ก (gík)
Jay: เกาเหลา (gao-lăo)
John: Jay, what's our first expression?
Jay: อ่อย (àuy)
John: This literally means "to lure," but when it's used as a slang expression, it means "to throw yourself at someone, or flirtatious."
Jay: [SLOW] อ่อย [NORMAL] อ่อย
John: Listeners, please repeat.
Jay: อ่อย
[pause - 5 sec.]
John: Use this expression when someone tries to hit on other people either explicitly or indirectly.
John: Now, let's hear an example sentence.
Jay: [NORMAL] เธออ่อยผู้ชายคนนั้นแต่โดนปฏิเสธ [SLOW] เธออ่อยผู้ชายคนนั้นแต่โดนปฏิเสธ
John: "She threw herself at him, but got rejected."
Jay: [NORMAL] เธออ่อยผู้ชายคนนั้นแต่โดนปฏิเสธ
John: Okay, what's the next expression?
Jay: ขึ้นคาน ( khûen-khaan)
John: This literally means "going up the Khaan, the pole that supports the roof," but when it's used as a slang expression, it means "to become someone who has never been married, or will likely not have the chance to get married; usually used for an old or middle-aged woman."
Jay: [SLOW] ขึ้นคาน [NORMAL] ขึ้นคาน
John: Listeners, please repeat.
Jay: ขึ้นคาน
[pause - 5 sec.]
John: Use this expression to refer to a woman who seems like a spinster. Be careful when you use this word, some people take it more seriously than others and it can hurt their feelings if you say it in a mocking tone.
John: Now, let's hear an example sentence.
Jay: [NORMAL] อายุจะ 30 แล้ว ระวังจะขึ้นคานนะจ๊ะ [SLOW] อายุจะ 30 แล้ว ระวังจะขึ้นคานนะจ๊ะ
John: "You are almost 30 now, be careful not to end up like a spinster."
Jay: [NORMAL] อายุจะ 30 แล้ว ระวังจะขึ้นคานนะจ๊ะ
John: Okay, what's our next expression?
Jay: กิ๊ก (gík)
John: This word doesn’t have a literal meaning, but when it's used as a slang expression, it means "a secret lover, casual lover, or a fling; to have an affair or to secretly date someone."
Jay: [SLOW] กิ๊ก [NORMAL] กิ๊ก
John: Listeners, please repeat.
Jay: กิ๊ก
[pause - 5 sec.]
John: Use this expression when you refer to two people who are secret lovers or are having a fling. However, if one or both are attached, the word implies that they are having an affair.
John: Now, let's hear an example sentence.
Jay: [NORMAL] เขากิ๊กอยู่กับผู้หญิงคนนั้น [SLOW] เขากิ๊กอยู่กับผู้หญิงคนนั้น
John: "He is secretly dating that girl."
Jay: [NORMAL] เขากิ๊กอยู่กับผู้หญิงคนนั้น
John: Okay, what's the last expression?
Jay: เกาเหลา (gao-lăo)
John: This literally means "noodle soup without noodle," but when it's used as a slang expression, it means "when two people are not on good terms."
Jay: [SLOW] เกาเหลา [NORMAL] เกาเหลา
John: Listeners, please repeat.
Jay: เกาเหลา
[pause - 5 sec.]
John: Use this expression to refer to someone who is not in good terms with someone else. It can imply that they don't talk to one another anymore or they don't like each other.
John: Now, let's hear an example sentence.
Jay: [NORMAL] ได้ยินมาว่าดารา2คนนั้นเกาเหลากัน [SLOW] ได้ยินมาว่าดารา2คนนั้นเกาเหลากัน
John: "I heard that those two celebrities are not on good terms with each other."
Jay: [NORMAL] ได้ยินมาว่าดารา2คนนั้นเกาเหลากัน
