John: Words Often Used in Daily Conversations, part 1
John: Hi everyone, and welcome back to ThaiPod101.com. I'm John.
Jay: And I'm Jay!
John: This is Must-know Thai Slang Words and Phrases, Season 1, Lesson 20. In this lesson, you'll learn words often used in daily conversations.
John: These slang terms are used like normal words in everyday conversations.
SLANG EXPRESSIONS
John: The expressions you will be learning in this lesson are...
Jay: ตังค์ (dtang)
Jay: กรึ่มๆ (grùem grùem)
Jay: อวย (uuai)
Jay: เว่อร์ (wôoe)
John: Jay, what's our first expression?
Jay: ตังค์ (dtang)
John: This literally means "money.”
Jay: [SLOW] ตังค์ [NORMAL] ตังค์
John: Listeners, please repeat.
Jay: ตังค์
[pause - 5 sec.]
John: Use this expression to refer to money. Originally, it's from the word "Satang coin," which is an old monetary value in Thailand. 100 Satang = 1 Baht.
John: Now, let's hear an example sentence.
Jay: [NORMAL] ฉันไม่ได้เอาตังค์มา [SLOW] ฉันไม่ได้เอาตังค์มา
John: "I didn't bring my money."
Jay: [NORMAL] ฉันไม่ได้เอาตังค์มา
John: Okay, what's the next expression?
Jay: กรึ่มๆ (grùem grùem)
John: This word doesn’t have a literal meaning, but when it's used as a slang expression, it means "tipsy."
Jay: [SLOW] กรึ่มๆ [NORMAL] กรึ่มๆ
John: Listeners, please repeat.
Jay: กรึ่มๆ
[pause - 5 sec.]
John: Use this expression to refer to someone who is tipsy.
John: Now, let's hear an example sentence.
Jay: [NORMAL] เวลาดื่มแอลกอฮอล์จะมีอาการกรึ่มๆ [SLOW] เวลาดื่มแอลกอฮอล์จะมีอาการกรึ่มๆ
John: "When you drink alcohol, you will feel a bit tipsy."
Jay: [NORMAL] เวลาดื่มแอลกอฮอล์จะมีอาการกรึ่มๆ
John: Okay, what's our next expression?
Jay: อวย (uuai)
John: This literally means "to give," but when it's used as a slang expression, it means "to over-flatter someone, or to compliment someone excessively."
Jay: [SLOW] อวย [NORMAL] อวย
John: Listeners, please repeat.
Jay: อวย
[pause - 5 sec.]
John: Use this expression when someone tries to excessively compliment someone else because they admire or adore the person. It’s often used when a fan compliments a celebrity they adore, regardless of whether the compliment is true or not.
John: Now, let's hear an example sentence.
Jay: [NORMAL] ฉันคิดว่านักแสดงคนนี้ไม่ได้แสดงเก่งขนาดนั้น แต่ทำไมมีคนอวยเยอะจัง [SLOW] ฉันคิดว่านักแสดงคนนี้ไม่ได้แสดงเก่งขนาดนั้น แต่ทำไมมีคนอวยเยอะจัง
John: "I think this actor's acting is not that good, so why are there so many people who over-compliment him?"
Jay: [NORMAL] ฉันคิดว่านักแสดงคนนี้ไม่ได้แสดงเก่งขนาดนั้น แต่ทำไมมีคนอวยเยอะจัง
John: Okay, what's the last expression?
Jay: เว่อร์ (wôoe)
John: This literally means "overreact," but when it's used as a slang expression, it means "to exaggerate, to overreact, or to be over the top."
Jay: [SLOW] เว่อร์ [NORMAL] เว่อร์
John: Listeners, please repeat.
Jay: เว่อร์
[pause - 5 sec.]
