INTRODUCTION
John: Words Describing Personalities, part 3
John: Hi everyone, and welcome back to ThaiPod101.com. I'm John.
Jay: And I'm Jay!
John: This is Must-know Thai Slang Words and Phrases, Season 1, Lesson 7. In this lesson, you'll learn words for describing personalities.
John: These words describe certain personality traits.
SLANG EXPRESSIONS
John: The expressions you will be learning in this lesson are...
Jay: เฉิ่ม (chòem )
Jay: ไม่เต็ม ( mâi dtem)
Jay: โลกสวย (lôok sŭua)
Jay: เกรียน (griian)
John: Jay, what's our first expression?
Jay: เฉิ่ม (chòem )
John: This has no literal meaning, but when it's used as a slang expression, it means "uncool, lame."
Jay: [SLOW] เฉิ่ม [NORMAL] เฉิ่ม
John: Listeners, please repeat.
Jay: เฉิ่ม
[pause - 5 sec.]
John: Use this expression when describing a behavior, way of thinking, or way of dressing that is uncool.
John: Now, let's hear an example sentence.
Jay: [NORMAL] คุณเฉิ่มมาก [SLOW] คุณเฉิ่มมาก
John: "You're so lame!"
Jay: [NORMAL] คุณเฉิ่มมาก
John: Okay, what's the next expression?
Jay: ไม่เต็ม ( mâi dtem)
John: This literally means "not full," but when it's used as a slang expression, it means "being abnormal or a lunatic, not all there."
Jay: [SLOW] ไม่เต็ม [NORMAL] ไม่เต็ม
John: Listeners, please repeat.
Jay: ไม่เต็ม
[pause - 5 sec.]
John: Use this expression when you find that someone looks or acts strangely. Be careful when you use this word. If you say it in an unpleasant tone, it can be offensive. It depends on your context and tone.
John: Now, let's hear an example sentence.
Jay: [NORMAL] เขาเป็นคนฉลาดมากๆแต่ดูไม่ค่อยเต็ม [SLOW] เขาเป็นคนฉลาดมากๆแต่ดูไม่ค่อยเต็ม
John: "He's a very smart person, but he seems abnormal."
Jay: [NORMAL] เขาเป็นคนฉลาดมากๆแต่ดูไม่ค่อยเต็ม
John: Okay, what's our next expression?
Jay: โลกสวย (lôok sŭua)
John: This literally means "beautiful world," but when it's used as a slang expression, it means "blindly optimistic, overly optimistic, or too naive."
Jay: [SLOW] โลกสวย [NORMAL] โลกสวย
John: Listeners, please repeat.
Jay: โลกสวย
[pause - 5 sec.]
John: Use this expression when someone says something overly optimistic or naive. It can also be used to describe overly optimistic people.
John: Now, let's hear an example sentence.
Jay: [NORMAL] ฉันรำคาญเวลาใครมาทำตัวโลกสวยใส่ [SLOW] ฉันรำคาญเวลาใครมาทำตัวโลกสวยใส่
John: "I get so annoyed when someone is being overly optimistic."
Jay: [NORMAL] ฉันรำคาญเวลาใครมาทำตัวโลกสวยใส่
John: Okay, what's the last expression?
Jay: เกรียน (griian)
John: This literally means "buzz cut,” a type of close-cut hairstyle, but when it's used as a slang expression, it means "being a troll—like on the Internet—or being a rude or silly person."
Jay: [SLOW] เกรียน [NORMAL] เกรียน
John: Listeners, please repeat.
Jay: เกรียน
[pause - 5 sec.]
John: Use this expression for people who purposefully irritate others, both online and in the real world. The word became slang because most trolls are male students in school. In Thailand, male students are forced to have a buzz cut. So, this word is used as slang to describe a troll.
John: Now, let's hear an example sentence.
Jay: [NORMAL] ผู้ชายคนนี้เข้ามาเกรียนในเฟสบุ๊คของฉัน [SLOW] ผู้ชายคนนี้เข้ามาเกรียนในเฟสบุ๊คของฉัน
John: "This guy was trolling on my Facebook.”
Jay: [NORMAL] ผู้ชายคนนี้เข้ามาเกรียนในเฟสบุ๊คของฉัน
QUIZ
John: Okay listeners, are you ready to be quizzed on the expressions you just learned? I'll describe four situations, and you choose the correct expression. Are you ready?
John: Jessie doesn’t act or talk like a normal person.
[pause - 5 sec.]
Jay: ไม่เต็ม
John: "being abnormal or lunatic, not all there"
John: When you make a fool of yourself by saying or doing something stupid or dressing in a very outdated outfit.
[pause - 5 sec.]
