POST

Eric: "My baby is the cutest."
Eric: Let's break this down. First is an expression meaning "My baby."
Jay: ลูกแม่ (lûuk maâe )
Eric: Thai people love to softly pinch a baby or small child’s cheeks if they think the baby or child is cute. However, if you're not close with the parents, you should ask them first if they are ok with you touching their child. Listen again- "My baby" is...
Jay: (SLOW) ลูกแม่ (lûuk maâe ) (REGULAR) ลูกแม่ (lûuk maâe )
Eric: Then comes the phrase - "is the cutest..."
Jay: น่ารักที่สุด (nâa-rák thîi-sùt)
Eric: In Thailand, there is a belief that one should not call a new-born baby 'cute', because this will invite a ghost to come steal the baby away. Some people prefer to use the word 'ugly' or 'malicious' instead of the word 'cute' to prevent the ghost from coming near their babies. However, this is a belief that is normally practiced by the older generation. Young people nowadays mostly don't follow this belief but of course, some still do. Listen again- "is the cutest." is...
Eric: altogether, "My baby is the cutest."
