Peter: Now, Becky, let’s talk language learning fears.
Becky: Alright!
Peter: What do we have first on the list? What are our listeners truly terrified of?
Becky: The first one is... “I’m afraid I’m not good enough to start speaking. I freeze up.”
Peter: Listeners, do you feel like you’re not good enough to start speaking?
Becky: It’s a pretty common fear... or misconception, I think... that most learners have.
Peter: Well, here’s how you overcome it.
Becky: Step one - the best way to get good at speaking is to start speaking from day 1. So if you’re holding yourself back...
Peter: ...because you think you’re not good enough, well, that’s exactly why you’re not good enough.
Becky: You need to open your mouth and start talking! But if you’re wondering what to say...
Peter: ..Here’s step two. In our lessons, you get the exact phrases and scripts for introducing yourself...
Becky: ...making small talk, ordering food, expressing opinions, and much more!
Peter: So, if you don’t know what to say, the lessons will give you the exact lines to say.
Becky: Or step three: Learn with your own teacher with our Premium PLUS plan.
Peter: That’s right, Becky. Listeners, with Premium PLUS, you get an actual native-speaking teacher to tell you what to say...
Becky: ...how to say it...
Peter: ...so you truly do learn to speak with the help of a real native teacher.
Becky: Fear number two is... “I’m afraid I’ll never be fluent”
Peter: I used to worry about that too.
Becky: Really?
Peter: Well, only as a beginner. I started learning Japanese first and, it’s funny because the longer I kept at it, the better my Japanese become, and the less I was worried about fluency.
Becky: So, how can our listeners overcome this?
Peter: First, you’ve got to set small, specific goals. Fluency is a very big, vague goal.
Becky: That’s very true.
Peter: I mean, what is fluency? There are over a million words in the English language and we use about 2,000.
Becky: So listeners, you should focus on smaller goals.
Peter: For example set a goal like... being able to introduce yourself or having a 5-minute conversation. Something you can measure so you know you reached it.
Becky: Because you can’t really measure fluency. It’s a pretty vague goal, as Peter said.
Peter: Also, Becky, it’s just a matter of time. Getting good at a language simply is an equation of time put in.
Becky: Right. Listeners, simply put, the longer you stick with learning a language... the better you get.
Peter: And that’s a guarantee. Okay Becky, what’s the third fear?
Becky: The third fear is... “I’m afraid that I’m not making any progress.”
Peter: If you’re afraid you’re not making progress, there are two things you can do right now.
Becky: First, use the dashboard to track your progress. If you need numbers to believe it...
Peter: ...our dashboard tracks your progress and gives you dynamic reports.
Becky: Second, try a harder lesson on the site. It sounds crazy and you might not understand it...
Peter: ...but you will in minutes. Our lessons come with line-by-line translations...
Becky: ...and the lesson hosts explain everything. THEN, you’ll be making progress...
Peter: ...because you now understand something you didn’t minutes ago.
Becky: The fourth fear is... “I’m afraid of not understanding anything I hear.”
Peter: Ah, this is very common. You hear advanced grammar and vocabulary and it goes completely over your head.
Becky: That’s my biggest fear, Peter.
Peter: To beat this ... if you’re taking an advanced lesson, be sure to read along. Reading along with our line-by-line tool is the best way to instantly understand advanced conversations.
Becky: What about in real-life situations?
Peter: For real-life situations, learn useful phrases like “can you say it slower?,” “can you say it in simpler words?” or even “I don’t understand.”
Becky: There’s nothing wrong with saying that you didn’t understand. Or with asking for help.
Peter: Listeners, our lessons cover must-know phrases like this. Especially the Survival Phrases series.
Becky: So, these are the top 4 fears. But tell us listeners...
Peter:... what language learning fears have you had?
Becky: Leave us a comment in the comment section!
Peter: And if you want to finally master your language, now is the chance.
Becky: Get a Monster 28% OFF all Basic or Premium Subscriptions...
