Lesson focus

There will be many times when the Thai around you or coming at you is fast and furious and you may not catch some parts or even any of it. In instances like this, asking the speaker to say it again can prove the difference between understanding a crucial piece of information and spending the rest of the day trying to figure out just what was said. So that you can get a feel for the language and tune your ear, you should use the following phrase over and over.
In Thai, to ask the person to say it "Once again, please" is phûut ìik thii dâai mǎi.
phûut ìik thii dâai mǎi.
Let’s break it down by syllable: phûut ìik thii dâai mǎi.
phûut ìik thii dâai mǎi.
As always, we add khá for women and khráp for men at the end of the phrase to make it more polite. That means for women, we say phûut ìik thii dâai mǎi khá.
phûut ìik thii dâai mǎi khá.
And for men, phûut ìik thii dâai mǎi khráp.
phûut ìik thii dâai mǎi khráp.
Let's hear it once again:
phûut ìik thii dâai mǎi khá.
phûut ìik thii dâai mǎi khráp.
Do you remember that the first word, phûut, means "speak" or "talk"? We learned that in the previous lesson already.
The next word, ìik thii, literally means "one more time," followed by dâai, which means "can," and mǎi indicates that this phrase is a question.
And of course, it’s followed by khá or khráp, which makes the phrase sound more polite. Therefore, phûut ìik thii dâai mǎi khá and phûut ìik thii dâai mǎi khráp is equivalent to "Can you speak one more time, please?"
At times, even repetition of what is said isn't enough to understand the speaker, as the words are still too fast. For an instance like this, you may use the phrase "Slowly, please."
In Thai, "Slowly, please" is cháa-cháa ná.
cháa-cháa ná.
cháa-cháa ná.
Let's hear it one more time: cháa-cháa ná.
Cháa-cháa means "slow," while ná in this phrase indicates that this is a request. Therefore, to say "Slowly, please," for women, it’s cháa-cháa ná khá.
cháa-cháa ná khá.
And for men, cháa-cháa ná khráp.
cháa-cháa ná khráp.
Let's hear it one more time:
cháa-cháa ná khá.
cháa-cháa ná khráp.
This phrase can be used together. "Once again, please. Slowly, please" - for women, it's phûut ìik thii dâai mǎi khá. cháa-cháa ná khá.
phûut ìik thii dâai mǎi khá. cháa-cháa ná khá.
And for men, phûut ìik thii dâai mǎi khráp. cháa-cháa ná khráp.
phûut ìik thii dâai mǎi khráp. cháa-cháa ná khráp.
Another option is to combine those two phrases together. You may say phûut cháa-cháa ìik thii dâai mǎi?
phûut cháa-cháa ìik thii dâai mǎi?
Let's hear it one more time: phûut cháa-cháa ìik thii dâai mǎi?
Of course, it is phûut cháa-cháa ìik thii dâai mǎi khá? for women and phûut cháa-cháa ìik thii dâai mǎi khráp? Is for men.
This phrase literally means "Can you speak one more time slowly, please?"
Cultural Insights
Not only do Thai people tend to speak at super speed, we also shorten words and phrases. So it is very common for non-native speakers to find us very hard to understand; sometimes ,Thai themselves find each other difficult to understand! So don't hesitate to use this phrase to ask them to speak again or slower.

Outro
