Thank you. You are right ทิ้ง means "to trow away" but ทิ้งไว้ / ทิ้ง....ไว้ means "to leave (behind) / to leave somethings some where. Hope that helps. Please let me know if you have any future questions. I will be glad to help.

Seems like the English translation for the example phrase เขาทิ้งโน้ตไว้บอกว่าวันนี้จะกลับดึก

Should be something like: He left a note saying that he will be coming back late today
