INTRODUCTION
Jessi: Top 25 Thai Questions You Need to Know - Lesson 17: "What time is it?" in Thai. In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll master a common question for Thai learners, and then learn how to answer like a native speaker. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then, through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.
In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question "What time is it?" In Thai, this is...
Pim: gìi-moong láaeo khá
Jessi: The first word in the question "What time is it?" is...
Pim: gìi
Jessi: meaning "how much" or "how many" in English.
Pim: (Slow, by syllable) gìi
Jessi: Listen again and repeat.
Pim: gìi
{Pause}
Jessi: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is-
Pim: moong
Jessi: meaning "o'clock" or "hour"
Pim: (Slow, by syllable) moong
Jessi: Now repeat.
Pim: moong
{Pause}
Jessi: Listen to the first two words of the question and repeat.
Pim: gìi-moong
{Pause}
Jessi: And next is...
Pim: láaeo
Jessi: meaning "already, and then, as for, later"
Pim: (Slow, by syllable) láaeo
Jessi: Now repeat.
Pim: láaeo
{Pause}
Pim: Listen to the first three words of the question and repeat.
Pim: gìi-moong láaeo
{pause}
Jessi: And next...
Pim: khá
Jessi: a polite ending particle for female speakers for questions and requests
Pim: (Slow, by syllable) khá
Jessi: Now repeat.
Pim: khá
{Pause}
Jessi: Now listen to the entire question and repeat.
Pim: gìi-moong láaeo khá
{pause}
Jessi: Remember to change the final khá to khráp if you're a male speaker. Now, master the following pattern and responses to the question "What time is it?"
Pim: thîiang khâ
Jessi: "It's 12 P.M." Again, slowly. Repeat the phrase.
Pim: (Slow) thîiang khâ
{pause}
Jessi: Let's break it down from the beginning. The first word is...
Pim: thîiang
Jessi: means "noon"
Pim: (Slow, by syllable) thîiang
Jessi: Now repeat.
Pim: thîiang
{Pause}
Jessi: And next is...
Pim: khâ
Jessi: a particle added at the end of the sentence or phrase in order to increase the level of politeness when the speaker is a female
Pim: (Slow, by syllable) khâ
Jessi: Now repeat.
Pim: khâ
{Pause}
Jessi: Listen to the speaker say "It's 12 P.M." and then repeat.
Pim: thîiang khâ
{Pause}
Jessi: This is how you would say “It's 12 P.M.” if you are a female; if you are a male, simply replace the final khá to khráp. Now, listen to the entire response as you would say it if you’re a male, and repeat.
Pim: thîiang khráp
{Pause}
Jessi: To use a different, replace "12 P.M." with "2 A.M."
Pim: dtii sǎawng
Jessi: "2 A.M."
Pim: (slow) dtii sǎawng (regular) dtii sǎawng
Jessi: Listen to the phrase again, this time with "2 A.M.."
Pim: dtii-sǎawng khâ
Jessi: It mostly stays the same. simply replace "12 P.M." Say, "It's 2 A.M."
{pause}
Pim: dtii-sǎawng khâ
Jessi: Remember, this is how to answer the question if you’re a female. If you’re male, use khráp instead of khâ. Now let’s try it with a masculine version.
Jessi: To use a different phrase, replace "2 A.M." with "8:30 A.M."
Pim: bpàaet moong khrûeng
Jessi: "8:30 A.M."
Pim: (slow) bpàaet moong khrûeng (regular) bpàaet moong khrûeng
Jessi: Listen to the phrase again, this time with "8:30 A.M.."
Pim: bpàaet moong khrûeng khráp
Jessi: Replace the phrase "2 A.M." and use the male speech. Say, "It's 8.30 A.M."
{pause}
Pim: bpàaet moong khrûeng khráp
Jessi: To expand on the pattern, replace "8:30 A.M." with "1:25 P.M.."
Pim: bàai-moong yîi-sìp hâa naa thii
Jessi: "1:25 P.M."
Pim: (slow) bàai-moong yîi-sìp hâa naa thii (regular) bàai-moong yîi-sìp hâa naa thii
Jessi: Listen to the phrase again, this time with "1:25 P.M.."
Pim: bàai-moong yîi-sìp hâa naa thii khráp
Jessi: Replace "8:30 A.M." and use the male speech. Say, "It's 1.25 P.M."
{pause}
Pim: bàai-moong yîi-sìp hâa naa thii khráp
Jessi: Now it's time for a quiz. Imagine you're visiting Thailand and someone asks you what time it is. It's twelve o'clock. Respond to the question.
Pim: gìi-moong láaeo khá (five seconds) thîiang khâ
Jessi: Imagine it's 2 A.M. What would you say?
Pim: gìi-moong láaeo khá (five seconds) dtii-sǎawng khâ
Jessi: Imagine it's 8:30 A.M.. Answer the speaker's question using male speech.
Pim: gìi-moong láaeo khá (five seconds) bpàaet moong khrûeng khráp
Jessi: Now imagine it's 1:25 P.M.. Respond to the question using male speech.
Pim: gìi-moong láaeo khá (five seconds) bàai-moong yîi-sìp hâa naa thii khráp
Jessi: Now, you want to ask someone what time it is. Ask the question with female speech.
(5 seconds)
Pim: gìi-moong láaeo khá
{pause}
Jessi: This is the end of Lesson 17.
