{Pause}
Jessi: Listen to the speaker say "I learned it in school." and then repeat.
Pim: dì-chǎn riian maa jàak roong-riian khâ
Jessi: This is how you would say "I learned it in school." if you are a female; if you are a male, simply replace the word dì-chǎn with the word phǒm, meaning “I” in English. Remember to also change the final khá to khráp. Now, listen to the entire response as you would say it if you were a male, and repeat.
Pim: phǒm riian maa jàak roong-riian khráp
{Pause}
Jessi: To use a different phrase, replace "school" with "Thai language school."
Pim: roong-riian sǎawn-phaa-sǎa-thai
Jessi: "Thai language school"
Pim: (slow) roong-riian sǎawn-phaa-sǎa-thai (regular) roong-riian sǎawn-phaa-sǎa-thai
Jessi: Listen to the phrase again, this time with "Thai language school."
Pim: dì-chǎn riian maa jàak roong-riian sǎawn-phaa-sǎa-thai khâ
Jessi: It mostly stays the same, simply replace "school." Say "I learned it at a Thai language school."
{pause}
Pim: dì-chǎn riian maa jàak roong-riian sǎawn-phaa-sǎa-thai khâ
Jessi: Remember, this is how to answer you question if you’re a female. If you’re male, use phǒm instead of dì-chǎn. So now, let’s try it with a masculine version. To expand on the pattern,, replace "Thai language school" with "university."
Pim: má-hǎa-wít-thá-yaa-lai
Jessi: "university"
Pim: (slow) má-hǎa-wít-thá-yaa-lai (regular) má-hǎa-wít-thá-yaa-lai
Jessi: Listen to the phrase again, this time with "university."
Pim: phǒm riian maa jàak má-hǎa-wít-thá-yaa-lai khráp
Jessi: We replace the phrase for "Thai language school" and make rest of the sentence masculine. Say, "I learned it in university."
{pause}
Pim: phǒm riian maa jàak má-hǎa-wít-thá-yaa-lai khráp
Jessi: To make another phrase, replace "university" with "high school."
Pim: roong-riian mát-thá-yom-bplaai
Jessi: "high school"
Pim: (slow) roong-riian mát-thá-yom-bplaai (regular) roong-riian mát-thá-yom-bplaai
Jessi: Listen to the phrase again, this time with "high school."
Pim: phǒm riian maa jàak roong-riian mát-thá-yom-bplaai khráp
Jessi: We replace the word for "university" and keep the sentence masculine. Say "I learned it in high school."
{pause}
Pim: phǒm riian maa jàak roong-riian mát-thá-yom-bplaai khráp
Jessi: Ok! Now it's time for a quiz. Imagine you're visiting Thailand and someone asks you where you learned Thai. You’re a female speaker and you learned Thai in school. Respond to the question.
Pim: khun riian phaa-sǎa thai maa jàak thîi-nǎi khá (five seconds) dì-chǎn riian maa jàak roong-riian khâ
Jessi: Now imagine you’re a female speaker and you learned Thai language school. Respond to the question.
Pim: khun riian phaa-sǎa thai maa jàak thîi-nǎi khá (five seconds) dì-chǎn riian maa jàak roong-riian sǎawn-phaa-sǎa-thai khâ
Jessi: Now, imagine you’re a male speaker and you learned it in university. Answer the speaker's question.
Pim: khun riian phaa-sǎa thai maa jàak thîi-nǎi khá (five seconds) phǒm riian maa jàak má-hǎa-wít-thá-yaa-lai khráp
