เพชร ว่าไง น้องพลอย
Ben: What’s up, Ploy?
พลอย พี่เพชรค่ะ ไปส่งพลอยซื้อของเข้าบ้านหน่อย
Ben: Pet, take me to buy stuff for moving into my house, please.
เพชร ได้สิ ของเยอะไหม จะได้เอากระบะไป
Ben: Sure. Is it a lot of stuff? I can take my pick-up.
พลอย หลายอย่างเลยค่ะ อยากได้ศาลพระภูมิแบบเรือนไทยเก่าๆด้วยสักหลัง
Ben: Yeah, many things. I also want to get a spirit house in the style of an old Thai house.
เพชร เชยจัง เดี๋ยวนี้เขานิยมใช้แบบปูนกันแล้วจ้ะ ถูกกว่าเยอะ
Ben: That’s so old-fashioned! Now they like to use cement style ones. They’re a lot cheaper.
พลอย แล้วพวกของใช้ในบ้านล่ะคะ ไปดูที่ไหนดี
Ben: And for stuff to use in the house, where’s a good place to look?
เพชร เดี๋ยวนี้เห็นคนนิยมเข้าห้างโลตัสกันเยอะเลย ของคงจะถูกกว่าที่อื่นๆ
Ben: These days I see a lot of people like going to Lotus superstore. Stuff might be cheaper than other places.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Ben: Hey Khru Jing, I think spirit houses are one of the most obvious signs of religious practice that visitors to Thailand first notice.
Jing: I could see that. They really are all over the place -- not just at private homes, but also commercial buildings.
Ben: But isn’t it true that the spirit houses don’t really have that much to do with Buddhism?
Jing: Yeah, I guess that’s true. But the spirit houses don’t contradict Buddhism either. They are just a way to help our world and the unseen world coexist in harmony.
Ben: I see. And who exactly are the spirits that live in these houses?
Jing: There’s actually two types of spirit houses. One is for jâo-thîi เจ้าที่ or the “lord of the place”, and another kind is for พระภูมิ phrá-phuum or the “deity of the earth”.
Ben: Oh, is that why I sometimes see two spirit houses together?
Jing: Yes, the one for พระภูมิ phrá-phuum would be a little higher in that case.
Ben: Hmm...you learn something new every day. Alright, how about now we take a look at the vocabulary.

KEY VOCABULARY AND PHRASES
Ben: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson.
Jing: The first phrase we’ll look at is....
Jing: ว่าไง wâa ngai
Ben: This is a simple greeting, equivalent to “What’s up?”
Jing: Yes, that’s right. We use this most often over the phone.
Ben: OK, I got it. The next phrase to look at is...
Jing: สักหลัง sàk lǎng
Ben: This expression means “some house” or “just one house”.
Jing: That’s right. สัก sàk can mean “only” or “just”. And หลัง lǎng is the classifier for houses.
Ben: What was the sentence from the conversation that made use of this phrase?
Jing: Ploy said ...อยากได้ศาลพระภูมิแบบเรือนไทยเก่าๆด้วยสักหลัง
yàak dâai sǎan-phrá-phuum bàaep ruuean thai gào-gào dûuai sàk lǎng.
Ben: “I also want to get a spirit house in the style of an old Thai house.” OK, what was the next phrase?
Jing: พวกของใช้ phûuak khǎawng-chái
Ben: This means “the equipment” or “the utensils”.
Jing: Right. พวก phûuak can go in front of any noun to make it plural. And ของใช้ khǎawng-chái means “things that are used”.
Ben: I see. So ของใช้ khǎawng-chái could mean, “tools”, “utensils”, or “equipment”.
Jing: Exactly.
Ben: And then the final phrase to look at is...
Jing: เข้าห้าง khâo hâang
Ben: This means “to go to the shopping center”.
Jing: Yes, that’s right. ห้าง hâang is a noun that can mean “mall”, “department store”, or “shopping center”.
Ben: And isn’t เข้า khâo the verb “to enter”?
Jing: Yes, it is. So really, เข้าห้าง khâo hâang means “enter the shopping center”. But the way we use it is more like saying “come to the shopping center”.
Ben: I see. Alright, now let’s move on to the grammar section.

Lesson focus

Ben: The focus of this lesson is นิยม ní-yom + verb used to mean "likes to do".
Jing: นิยม ní-yom is a verb meaning “to favor” or “to prefer”. When it is followed by another verb it means “to like to do” some action.
Ben: OK, that sounds easy enough. Am I correct that the subject of the sentence would come before นิยม ní-yom?
Jing: Yes, that’s right. In Thai we don’t always need to state the subject of the sentence. But if it’s there it will go before นิยม ní-yom. And then some other verb will go after that.
Ben: How about an example.
Jing: Sure. One sentence from the conversation was...
เดี๋ยวนี้เขานิยมใช้แบบปูนกันแล้วจ้ะ
dǐiao-níi khǎo ní-yom chái bàaep bpuun gan láaeo jâ.
Ben: “Now they like to use cement style ones.” So the key words here are นิยมใช้ ní-yom chái.
Jing: Right. ใช้ chái is the verb “to use”, so the phrase นิยมใช้ ní-yom chái means “like to use”.
Ben: And we had นิยม ní-yom in one other sentence. Didn’t we?
Jing: Yes, there was also the sentence...
เดี๋ยวนี้เห็นคนนิยมเข้าห้างโลตัสกันเยอะเลย
dǐiao-níi hěn khon ní-yom khâo hâang loo-dtàt gan yóe looei.
Ben: “These days I see a lot of people like going to Lotus superstore.”
In this case, the key words are นิยมเข้า ní-yom khâo.
Jing: Exactly. As we said before เข้า khâo means “to enter”, so คนนิยมเข้าห้าง khon ní-yom khâo hâang means “people like to come to the shopping center”.
Ben: Basically, we could use นิยม ní-yom with just about any action.
Jing: Yes, we could.
Ben: OK then. How about giving us a few more phrases so the listeners can have some speaking practice. Alright, everyone out there, please repeat after Khru Jing. First, how about “like to go”...
Jing: นิยมไป ní-yom bpai
Ben: (pause) OK, now “like to eat”.
Jing: นิยมกิน ní-yom gin
Ben: (pause) “like to study”
Jing: นิยมเรียน ní-yom riian
Ben: (pause) Alright, now how about “like to dress as”
Jing: นิยมแต่งตัว ní-yom dtàeng-dtuua
Ben: (pause) And the last one. “like to travel”
Jing: นิยมไปเที่ยว ní-yom bpai thiiao
Ben: (pause) Great job everyone!
Ben: That's it for this lesson. Then see you next time!
Jing: ลาก่อน
