INTRODUCTION
Jing: สวัสดีค่ะ sà-wàt-dii khâ
Ben: Ben here! Upper Beginner Season 1 , Lesson 2 - Do You Know How Thai Shops Bring in the Customers?
Jing: Hi, my name is Jing, and I am joined here by Ben: .
Ben: Hello, everyone and welcome back to ThaiPOD101.com
Jing: What are we learning in this lesson?
Ben: In this lesson you'll learn how พอ...ก็... phaaw...gâaw is used to describe a chain of events.
Jing: This conversation takes place at the office of a travel agency in Bangkok.
Ben: The conversation is between Ploy and her boss, the owner of the travel agency.
Jing: The speakers are of unequal social levels, so Ploy will be speaking polite Thai to her superior.
Ben: Let’s listen to the conversation.

Lesson conversation

Ben: Let’s hear the conversation one time slowly.
Ben: Now let’s hear it with the English translation.
พลอย พี่ไปดูหมอดูที่ไหนมาคะ
Ben: Where did you go to see the fortune teller?
เจ้าของบริษัท หน้าร้านดอกไม้แถวบ้านน่ะจ้ะ พอซื้อพวงมาลัยเสร็จก็เลยลองแวะดูนิดหน่อย
Ben: In front of the flower shop by my house. As soon as I finished buying a flower garland I just stopped by to check it out.
พลอย ถึงว่า ทำไมวันนี้พวงมาลัยถวายนางกวักสวยมาก
Ben: So that’s it. That's why the flower garland for the “beckoning lady” is really beautiful today.
เจ้าของบริษัท นี่...ไม่เชื่อก็ต้องเชื่อนะ พอพี่ไหว้เสร็จ ลูกค้าก็โทร.เข้ามาทันทีเลย
Ben: If you don’t believe then you need to. As soon as I finished paying homage a customer suddenly called on the phone.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Ben: Hey Khru Jing, can you explain exactly what this “lady who beckons” is?
Jing: Sure. She is usually a small statue that shops keep in a little shrine. She’s supposed to help bring in customers.
Ben: Ok. And how does she bring them in? Just on the basis of her good looks?
Jing: Well, she is a pretty lady, you know. She just sits there very patiently with her hand raised up in a “come hither” motion.
Ben: And it works?
Jing: People think it does. It’s hard to find a shop that doesn’t keep an image of นางกวัก naang-gwàk. But for her magic to really work well, you need to recite her mantra each day and give her some offerings.
Ben: I see. What kinds of stuff does she like to get?
Jing: Usually we give her popped rice, flower garlands, candles, and scented paste.
Ben: Interesting! OK, now let’s have a look at the vocabulary.

KEY VOCABULARY AND PHRASES
Ben: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson.
Jing: The first phrase is ไป...มา bpai...maa
Ben: This pattern is used to express the idea of having returned after going somewhere.
Jing: Yes. Usually in English I think you’d just say you went somewhere, but in Thai it sounds more complete to add that we came back, too.
Ben: OK. And how does the pattern go?
Jing: ไป bpai is the verb “to go”, and มา maa is the verb “to come”. You put either a place or an action in between the two verbs.
Ben: Alright. How about an example using a place?
Jing: ฉันไปร้านกาแฟมา chǎn bpai ráan-gaa--faae maa
Ben: “I went to the coffee shop.” or more literally “I’ve returned from going to the coffee shop.” What about if we use an action instead of a place?
Jing: I could say ฉันไปกินกาแฟมา chǎn bpai gin gaa-faae maa
Ben: “I went to drink coffee.” or “I’ve returned from going to drink coffee.” What’s the next phrase?
Jing: ถึงว่า thǔeng wâa
Ben: This phrase is used to express consent or acceptance with something that someone else has just spoken.
Jing: That’s right. We often use it in ถึงว่าสิ thǔeng wâa sì, which just means something like “OK, I got it” or “Yeah, that’s right.”
Ben: Alright. And the last phrase is...
Jing: ทันที than-thii
Ben: This means “immediately”, “at once”, or “right away”. It usually comes at the end of the sentence or phrase.
Jing: Right. For example, I could say...ถ้ามีปัญหาอะไร โทรมาหาฉันทันที
thâa mii bpan-hǎa à-rai thoo maa chǎn than-thii.
Ben: “If you have any problem call me immediately.” Can we hear this sentence again broken up into two parts?
Jing: ถ้ามีปัญหาอะไร
Ben: “If you have any problem...”
Jing: โทรมาหาฉันทันที
Ben: “call me immediately.” Alright. Now let’s move on to the grammar section.

Lesson focus

Ben: The focus of this lesson is พอ...ก็... phaaw...gâaw, which is used to describe a chain of events.
Jing: In this pattern, พอ phaaw functions as a conjunction meaning “as soon as”. It will be followed in the sentence by some action or event.
Ben: And then that has to be followed by another sentence, right?
Jing: Yes. We use another conjunction, ก็ gâaw, to say “and then”. This is followed by another action or event.
Ben: So the basic meaning is “As soon as A occurs, then B occurs.”
Jing: Yes, that’s right. An example from the conversation was... พอพี่ไหว้เสร็จ ลูกค้าก็โทร.เข้ามาทันทีเลย phaaw phîi wâai sèt lûuk-kháa gâaw thoo khâo maa than-thii looei.
Ben: “As soon as I finished paying homage a customer suddenly called on the phone.” It’s important to watch the word order when using this pattern, isn’t it?
Jing: Ah, yes. It is. พอ phaaw should begin the first sentence. Then if the subject of the second sentence is included, it must come before the conjunction ก็ gâaw. For example...พอฉันกลับบ้าน ฉันก็กินข้าว phaaw chǎn glàp bâan chǎn gâaw gin khâao.
Ben: “As soon as I return home I eat.” How about we look at each part of that separately?
Jing: Sure. The first half is... พอฉันกลับบ้าน
Ben: “As soon as I return home”
Jing: And the second part is ฉันก็กินข้าว
Ben: “I then eat .” Now you could also leave out the subject of each sentence and still have it make sense right?
Jing: Oh, sure. If it’s obvious the speaker is talking about themselves, they could just say... พอกลับบ้าน ก็กินข้าว phaaw glàp bâan gâaw gin khâao.
Ben: “As soon as I return home I eat.” What about if you want to talk about a chain of events that didn’t happen yet?
Jing: That’s really easy. We just include the auxiliary verb จะ jà to put the chain of events in the future. For example, I could say... พอฉันกลับบ้าน ก็จะกินข้าว phaaw chǎn glàp bâan gâaw jà gin khâao.
Ben: “As soon as I return home I will eat.” Let’s break this into two parts as well. Listeners please repeat after Khru Jing.
Jing: พอฉันกลับบ้าน
Ben: (pause) “As soon as I return home...”
Jing: ก็จะกินข้าว
Ben: (pause) “...then I will eat.” Now altogether one last time...
Jing: พอฉันกลับบ้าน ก็จะกินข้าว phaaw chǎn glàp bâan gâaw jà gin khâao.
