| Ben: “What kind of lemon comes from outer space?” Huh? Oh, is this another joke like the one we had in the dialogue? |

| KEY VOCABULARY AND PHRASES |
| Ben: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson. |
| Jing: The first word we’ll look at is.... |
| Jing: เหรอ rǒoe |
| Ben: This word can be used in many ways in Thai. At the end of a sentence it can change a statement into a question, asking for confirmation of what was said. In this sense it’s like the expression “really?” |
| Jing: Yeah, but it can also carry a somewhat sarcastic tone. |
| Ben: As in “Yeah...right.” In that case, the speaker does not agree with or actually believe what they say right before เหรอ rǒoe. |
| Jing: We had เหรอ rǒoe twice in the conversation. First was when Ploy’s sister asked...เหรอคะ rǒoe khá. |
| Ben: “Oh yeah?” And what was the second time? |
| Jing: Ploy said to her sister...ไม่รู้เหรอ mâi rúu rǒoe. |
| Ben: “Don’t you know?” So in this case, เหรอ rǒoe is used to express a hint of ridicule. |
| Jing: Yeah, you could say that. |
| Ben: What is the next phrase? |
| Jing: อะไรวะ à-rai wá |
| Ben: Hey don’t get mad at me. I was just asking you for the next phrase. |
| Jing: No, that is the next phrase.... อะไรวะ à-rai wá |
| Ben: Oh, OK. This is a very rude phrase, which translates to something like “What the heck?!”, but quite a bit stronger than that. |
| Jing: Yes, it’s pretty strong. อะไร à-rai is the question “what?” And at the end of the phrase is the particle วะ wá. |
| Ben: So this is a sentence ending particle similar to คะ khá and ครับ khráp, right? |
| Jing: Yes, but with one huge difference. คะ khá and ครับ khráp make a sentence sound more polite, but วะ wá will make a sentence sound more rude. |
| Ben: Right. In fact, putting วะ wá at the end of your sentences is equivalent to swearing. |
| Jing: So it would be best to not use วะ wá unless you are trying to get in a fight. |
| Ben: But it’s good to know just to recognize when you hear it, right? |
| Jing: Yes, you might hear close friends using it with each other, as well as characters in TV and movies. |
| Ben: I also see a lot of young people using วะ wá on Facebook. |
| Jing: Oh, yes. You see that too, but again, it’s only between close friends. |
| And actually, just so you know this particle can be said with two different tones. The high tone วะ wá is used in questions. And the falling tone ว่ะ wâ is used with statements. |
| Ben: I see. Now let’s move on to the grammar section. |

| Jing: เป็น bpen is the verb “to be”, and พิเศษ phí-sèet is an adjective meaning “special”. When used together, the phrase เป็นพิเศษ bpen phí-sèet acts like an adverb meaning "especially" or "particularly". |
| Ben: How does it get used in a sentence? |
| Jing: เป็นพิเศษ bpen phí-sèet should come after an adjective in the sentence. |
| Ben: OK, so we have some adjective followed by เป็นพิเศษ bpen phí-sèet, and it means “especially” or “particularly”. |
| Jing: You got it. One example from the conversation was when Ploy said... |
| วันนี้รู้สึกเบื่อเป็นพิเศษ น้องเพลง |
| wan-níi rúu-sùek bùuea bpen phí-sèet náawng phleeng. |
| Ben: “I feel rather bored today, Pleng.” |
| Jing: The key words in this sentence are เบื่อเป็นพิเศษ bùuea bpen phí-sèet, meaning “especially bored”. |
| Ben: OK, I see. So first we have the adjective เบื่อ bùuea, meaning “bored”. And when we say เบื่อเป็นพิเศษ bùuea bpen phí-sèet, it becomes “especially bored”. |
| Jing: That’s right. So you would use it if you feel more bored than usual. |
| Ben: Well, were there any other examples of เป็นพิเศษ bpen phí-sèet from the conversation? |
| Jing: Yes, there was one more. Ploy said to her sister...วันนี้น้องบ้าเป็นพิเศษ |
| wan-níi náawng bâa bpen phí-sèet. |
| Ben: “You’re crazier than usual today.” Does that imply that her sister is a little crazy every day? |
| Jing: Yeah, maybe a little. But she’s especially crazy just today. |
| Ben: And what’s the word for “crazy”? |
| Jing: บ้า bâa |
| Ben: Alright, let’s try a little speaking practice shall we? Listeners, please repeat these phrases after Khru Jing.... “especially bored” |

Thank you. หรอ rǎaw (pronounce with your lips rounded like you are going to blow an air out) is a corrupt, informal form of เหรอ rǒoe (smile wide when you're pronouncing it all your upper teeth is showed). หรอ rǎaw means "to lose (a part of)" for examples ร่อยหรอ "to diminish in quantity" สึกหรอ "to erode/ to deteriorate." but, when it acts as informal form or เหรอ rǒoe the sound become เหรอ rǒoe instead of rǎaw หรอ meaning and usage is exactly the same as เหรอ rǒoe huh? / Really? / isn't that, right? What's the difference in meaning between เหรอ and หรอ?
In this lesson's vocabulary the audio for เหรอ sounds more like หรอ. Is this correct or am I just mishearing?
