พลอย เพลง หอพักของน้องเป็นยังไงบ้าง
Ben: Pleng, how is your dormitory?
เพลง ใกล้กับมหาวิทยาลัยเลยค่ะ ที่จอดรถก็กว้าง ใต้ตึกมีเซเว่นด้วย
Ben: It’s really close to the university. The parking area is large, too. There’s also a 7-Eleven below the building.
พลอย เสียดายที่ไกลจากที่ทำงานพี่ จะได้ช่วยกันประหยัดตังค์
Ben: It’s too bad that you’re far from my office. We could help each other save money.
เพลง ไม่เอาหรอกค่ะ เกรงใจเวลาที่รักพี่พลอยมาหาน่ะ
Ben: No thanks. I’d feel in the way when your sweetheart comes over to see you.
พลอย ว้าย พูดอะไรบ้าๆ แล้วอย่าลืมจดที่อยู่ให้พี่ด้วยล่ะ
Ben: Yikes! You’re talking crazy. Anyways, don’t forget to write down your address for me.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Ben: Hey Khru Jing, I heard that many Thai people want to go to school at Chulalongkorn University.
Jing: Yes, that’s right. Do you know why?
Ben: I think it’s because the university is considered the top school in the country - but isn’t it a public school?
Jing: Yes, but what’s your point?
Ben: Well, in the U.S., all the really prestigious schools are expensive private universities.
Jing: Oh, the private universities in Thailand are more expensive too, but they aren’t as prestigious as the public ones.
Ben: Really? Why is that?
Jing: It’s because of the entrance test requirements. The public schools all have a limit to who they can accept. All the students whose test scores weren’t good enough to get into a public university, can try for a private one.
Ben: Well, that’s pretty interesting. OK, now let’s have a look at the vocabulary.

KEY VOCABULARY AND PHRASES
Ben: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson.
Jing: The first phrase we’ll look at is....
Jing: เป็นยังไงบ้าง bpen yàang-ngai bâang
Ben: This is a common greeting that is roughly equivalent to “How’s it going?” or “What’s happening?”.
Jing: Right. เป็น bpen is the verb “to be”, and ยังไง yang-ngai is a shortened form of อย่างไร yàang-rai, meaning “how”. Then บ้าง bâang means “any” or “some”.
Ben: So it’s a little bit like saying “Tell me something about how you are doing”.
Jing: Yeah, but the person asking doesn’t expect a detailed answer.
Ben: I see. What is the next phrase?
Jing: เกรงใจ greeng-jai
Ben: This can be either a verb or adjective, and it’s a little difficult to translate into English without getting wordy.
Jing: Yes, I agree. It’s often difficult to translate เกรงใจ greeng-jai exactly.
Ben: It can mean “to be afraid of offending”, “to be afraid of imposing upon”, “to be reluctant to disturb”, or “to be considerate”.
Jing: เกรงใจ greeng-jai is an important concept in Thai culture, and lacking an ability to feel เกรงใจ greeng-jai may lose you some friends over time.
Ben: What was the example we had?
Jing: Ploy’s sister said... เกรงใจเวลาที่รักพี่พลอยมาหาน่ะ
greeng-jai wee-laa thîi-rák phîi phlaawy maa hǎa nâ.
Ben: “I’d feel in the way when your sweetheart comes over to see you.”
And what’s the final phrase we’ll look at?
Jing: ใต้ตึก dtâi dtùek
Ben: This expression can refer to the “ground floor” of a building.
Jing: Yes, that’s what it meant in the conversation. ใต้ dtâi means “under” or “below”, and ตึก dtùek means “building”.
Ben: So the literal meaning is “under the building”, but it does not necessarily mean the basement.
Jing: Right, in fact, most buildings in Thailand don’t have a basement.
Ben: Ah yes, that’s right. OK, now let’s move on to the grammar section.

Lesson focus

Ben: The focus of this lesson is ที่ thîi + verb to make nouns.
Jing: There are many compound nouns made by putting a verb after ที่ thîi. These nouns can be people, places, or things.
Ben: The basic meaning of these compounds would be a “person who...”, “place where....”, or “thing which...”. But in the word itself there is no indication of which it is -- a person , place, or thing. Is there?
Jing: No there isn’t. They all just start with ที่ thîi followed by a verb. But the exact meaning can usually be determined by the verb that is used.
Ben: Maybe an example will help show this.
Jing: OK, one example from the conversation was ที่จอดรถ thîi-jàawt-rót, meaning “parking lot”.
Ben: I see. จอดรถ jàawt-rót means “to park a car”, so ที่จอดรถ thîi-jàawt-rót is a “place to park a car”.
Did we have any examples of a person?
Jing: We had ที่รัก thîi-rák, which means “sweetheart” or “darling”.
Ben: OK, I see. รัก rák is the verb “to love”, so ที่รัก thîi-rák is a “person who is loved”.
Now how about a thing?
Jing: I don’t think there was one in the conversation, but one word I can think of is ที่เปิดขวด thîi-bpòoet-khùuat, which means “bottle opener”.
Ben: Ah, yes. เปิดขวด bpòoet-khùuat means “open a bottle”, so ที่เปิดขวด thîi-bpòoet-khùuat is a “thing that opens bottles.” Hey I have an idea. How about we let the listeners try to guess the meaning of a few more of these compounds.
Jing: Great. Alright, นั่ง nâng means “to sit”. So can you guess what a ที่นั่ง thîi-nâng is?
Ben: (pause) OK, answer is....
Jing: “a seat”. Next, จับ jàp means “to grab”. So can you guess what a thîi-jàp is?
Ben: (pause) and the answer is....
Jing: “a handle”. Alright last one. ปรึกษา bprùek-sǎa means “to consult” or “to advise”. So what do you think ที่ปรึกษา thîi-bprùek-sǎa means?
Ben: (pause) OK, the answer is...
Jing: “an advisor”
Ben: Well listeners, how did you do? Were you able to guess at least two out of three correctly?
Ben: That's it for this lesson. Then see you next time everyone!
Jing: ลาก่อน
