Jing: This conversation takes place at Ploy's home.
Ben: The conversation is between Ploy and her younger sister, Pleng.
Jing: The speakers are siblings, therefore they will be speaking informally.
Ben: Let’s listen to the conversation.

พลอย เป็นไปได้ยังไงเนี่ย นางเอกไม่รับรักพระเอก
Ben: How is it possible? The leading lady didn’t accept the love of the leading man.
เพลง ดีเลย เรื่องนี้ตัวอิจฉาสวยกว่า น้องอยากให้นางเอกตายตอนจบ
Ben: Good. In this story the jealous character is prettier. I want the leading lady to die at the end.
พลอย เป็นไปไม่ได้หรอก นางเอกต้องได้แต่งงานกับพระเอกสิ ถ้าพี่เป็นนางเอกนะ จะรีบตอบตกลงเลย
Ben: It’s impossible. The leading lady must get married to the leading man. If I was the leading lady, I would rush to give him my answer.
เพลง พี่พลอย อย่าพูดอะไรที่มันเป็นไปไม่ได้เลย
Ben: Ploy, don’t talk about things that are impossible.
พลอย แหม งั้นขอแค่มีแฟนหล่อๆแบบนี้ก็พอใจแล้ว
Ben: Oh! Well then, just give me a boyfriend who’s handsome like this and I’ll be content.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Ben: Hey Khru Jing, what is up with Thai TV dramas?
Jing: Umm... I don’t know what you mean.
Ben: I mean how can you watch this stuff? You already know the leading man and leading lady characters are going to get together at the end. The plot is always so predictable.
Jing: Maybe you’re just not romantic and don’t know how to appreciate a good love story.
Ben: Well I can certainly appreciate a good story. But I can’t stand watching all the crying and screaming that goes on in these dramas.
Jing: Umm...Yeah, I suppose maybe the characters do get a little over-emotional at times.
Ben: A little?
Jing: OK, a lot. But it’s still fun to watch.
Ben: Let’s agree to disagree! Now let’s take a look at the vocabulary.

KEY VOCABULARY AND PHRASES
Ben: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson.
Jing: The first word is
Jing: นางเอก naang-èek
Ben: This is the leading female character in a TV drama. She is supposed to be a good girl. And her counterpart is...
Jing: พระเอก phrá-èek
Ben: This is the leading male character in a TV drama.
Jing: He usually gets caught in a love triangle, and has to choose between the, pure, innocent girl and a mean girl.
Ben: And that brings us to the next term...
Jing: ตัวอิจฉา dtuua-ìt-chǎa
Ben: This is the jealous character in a TV drama.
Jing: That’s right. She tries to disrupt the relationship between the leading man and leading lady.
Ben: Then the next phrase is...
Jing: ตายตอนจบ dtaai dtaawn jòp
Ben: This means “to die at the end”.
Jing: Yes, that’s correct. ตาย dtaai is the verb “to die”. ตอน dtaawn means “when” or “at the time of”, and จบ jòp means “to end” or “to finish”.
Ben: And how was this used in the conversation?
Jing: Ploy’s sister said she wanted to see the นางเอก naang-èek, or “leading lady”, ตายตอนจบ dtaai dtaawn jòp , or “die at the end” of the story.
Ben: Wow, she’s pretty heartless. What is the last phrase?
Jing: จะรีบตอบตกลงเลย jà rîip dtàawp dtòk long looei
Ben: This phrase means “will hurry to give a reply with a decision”.
Jing: รีบ rîip is the verb “to hurry”, and ตอบ dtàawp is the verb “to answer” or “to reply”. Then ตกลง dtòk long is an expression that means “to agree” or “to decide”.
Ben: In the conversation, Ploy indicated she would not waste her chance to be with the leading male character.
Jing: Yeah, something like if he asked to be with her, she would answer yes right away. The sentence was...ถ้าพี่เป็นนางเอกนะ จะรีบตอบตกลงเลย
thâa phîi bpen naang-èek ná. jà rîip dtàawp dtòk long looei.
Ben: “If I was the leading lady, I would rush to give him my answer.”
Alright, now let’s move on to the grammar section.

Lesson focus

Ben: The focus of this lesson is เป็นไปได้ bpen bpai dâai and เป็นไปไม่ได้ bpen bpai mâi dâai to talk about something being "possible" or "impossible".
Jing: The phrase เป็นไปได้ bpen bpai dâai means “to be possible”.
Ben: And is it easy to change “possible” to “impossible”?
Jing: Yes, it’s very easy. To say something is “impossible” we simply include the negative particle ไม่ mâi to get bpen bpai mâi dâai เป็นไปไม่ได้.
Ben: Which ways did we use these phrases in the conversation?
Jing: Well one example we had was...เป็นไปได้ยังไงเนี่ย
bpen bpai dâai yang-ngai nîia.
Ben: “How is it possible?” So here Ploy was asking a question, right?
Jing: Yes. She starts with เป็นไปได้ bpen bpai dâai for “it’s possible”. That’s followed by ยังไง yang-ngai, which is the question “how?”
Ben: OK, so that’s gives us “how is it possible?” Then what’s the purpose of the last word, เนี่ย nîia?
Jing: Oh, เนี่ย nîia at the end of a question just gives it a little extra emphasis.
Ben: I see.
Jing: Another sentence we had was... พี่พลอย อย่าพูดอะไรที่มันเป็นไปไม่ได้เลย
phîi phlaawy yàa phûut à-rai thîi man bpen bpai mâi dâai looei.
Ben: “Ploy, don’t talk about things that are impossible.”
This sentence was a little long. Maybe we can understand the meaning better if we break it up into two halves. First we had...
Jing: พี่พลอย อย่าพูดอะไร phîi phlaawy yàa phûut à-rai
Ben: “Ploy, don’t say something.”
Jing: ที่มันเป็นไปไม่ได้เลย thîi man bpen bpai mâi dâai looei.
Ben: “which is not possible at all.”
OK, is there anything else we should know about เป็นไปได้ bpen bpai dâai and เป็นไปไม่ได้ bpen bpai mâi dâai?
Jing: Yes. Often in sentences, เป็นไปได้ bpen bpai dâai and เป็นไปไม่ได้ bpen bpai mâi dâai will be followed by ว่า wâa or ที่ thîi to link them to the action that is being described as “possible” or “impossible”.
Ben: Can you give us an example of what you mean?
Jing: Certainly. How about this sentence...เป็นไปได้ว่าเธอมีแฟนใหม่
bpen bpai dâai wâa thooe mii faaen mài
Ben: “It’s possible she has a new boyfriend.” So there เป็นไปได้ bpen bpai dâai was followed by ว่า wâa to mean “It’s possible that”. What about a sentence using ที่ thîi?
Jing: OK, if I’m eating dinner, but I’m already stuffed, I might say...
เป็นไปไม่ได้ที่จะกินข้าวให้หมด
bpen bpai mâi dâai thîi jà gin khâao hâi mòt
Ben: “It’s impossible for me to finish eating my rice.” or word for word, it would be “It’s impossible that I will eat my rice until it’s finished.”
Jing: That’s right.
Ben: And can we hear the sentence in Thai once more?
Jing: เป็นไปไม่ได้ที่จะกินข้าวให้หมด
bpen bpai mâi dâai thîi jà gin khâao hâi mòt
Ben: That's it for this lesson, and this series! Thank you for tuning into this Upper Beginner series.
Jing: Yes, thanks everyone for listening! ลาก่อน
Ben: Until next time everyone!

Hello Choi,

Thanks again for your comment. For your question, "หรอก" is "raak" had no meaning and it use in negative statement when you want to make yourself more clear or correct the mis understanding. Hope that helps.

Have a nice day.
