POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Ben: Hey Khru Jing, what on earth are Naga Fireballs?
Jing: Oh, it’s really interesting. Every year on the night of the full moon in October, little balls of red light fly up out of the Mekong River.
Ben: What!? That’s crazy. They just appear from nowhere?
Jing: Sort of. Nobody really knows what causes it. But local people say it’s the mythical naga serpent, who lives in the river who shoots the fireballs into the air.
Ben: Hmm...I’m not sure I believe in Mythical serpents. No one can come up with a better explanation. Are you sure it isn’t just a hoax to lure in tourists?
Jing: Well the fireballs don’t make any sound. And it’s dark at night, but you can still see that they don’t come up from any boat. I think some scientists proposed that it is some gas coming up from the riverbed, but that doesn’t explain why it always happens on this one night per year. You should go see it for yourself if you don’t believe it.
Ben: OK, that sounds interesting. Maybe I’ll try to check it out next year. Now let’s have a look at the vocabulary.

KEY VOCABULARY AND PHRASES
Ben: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson.
Jing: The first phrase is ยินดีรับใช้ yin-dii ráp-chái
Ben: This is a polite greeting used over the phone when speaking to a customer.
Jing: That’s right. ยินดี yin-dii means “pleased”. รับ ráp means “to receive”, and ใช้ chái is the verb “to use”.
Ben: So it’s sort of like saying “We’re pleased to receive your call”.
Jing: Yes, but in practice it corresponds more to the English phrase “How may I help you?”
Ben: OK, and what’s the next phrase?
Jing: ไม่ทราบว่า mâi sâap wâa
Ben: This is a very polite way of asking a question. It can mean “what?”, “who?”, “where?”, or “when?” depending on the information that follows.
Jing: Exactly. ทราบ sâap is the polite form of the verb “to know”, so literally ไม่ทราบว่า mâi sâap wâa means “I don’t know that...” It will come at the beginning of a question. For example... ไม่ทราบว่าคุณชื่ออะไรคะ mâi sâap wâa khun chûue à-rai khá.
Ben: “What is your name?” I see. So actually the entire question comes after ไม่ทราบว่า mâi sâap wâa.
Jing: Yes, that’s right. It doesn’t add anything to the meaning. It just makes your question more humble and polite.
Ben: Alright. And what is the last phrase?
Jing: ขอแนะนำ khǎaw-náe-nam
Ben: This phrase is a polite way to say “May I suggest...?”
Jing: Yes, that’s right. ขอ khǎaw means “to ask for” or “to ask permission”. And แนะนำ náe-nam is a verb meaning “to recommend”, “to suggest”, or “to introduce”.
Ben: So this phrase is pretty easy to use. Simply say it before the object or action you wish to recommend. Can you give us an example?
Jing: OK. ขอแนะนำให้คุณพักที่โรงแรมสวัสดี khǎaw-náe-nam hâi khun phák thîi roong-raaem sà-wàt-dii.
Ben: “May I recommend that you stay at Sawatdee Hotel?” Great, now let’s move on to the grammar.

Lesson focus

Ben: The focus of this lesson is จอง jaawng used to talk about making reservations.
Jing: จอง jaawng is a verb that means “to reserve” or “to book”. It can be used in many occasions with different objects such as... จองตั๋ว jaawng dtǔua
Ben: “reserve a ticket”
Jing: จองรถ jaawng rót
Ben: “reserve a car”
Jing: จองห้อง jaawng hâwng
Ben: “reserve a room”
Jing: จองโต๊ะ jaawng dtó
Ben: “reserve a table”
Jing: and จองที่นั่ง jaawng thîi-nâng
Ben: “reserve a seat”. What was an example sentence from the conversation?
Jing: The customer said ผมอยากจองรถตู้ phǒm yàak jaawng rót-dtûu.
Ben: “I want to reserve a van.” So I could just change the last word of that sentence if I wanted to reserve different things, right?
Jing: Right! Let’s try it. What would you say to reserve a ticket?
Ben: ผมอยากจองตั๋ว phǒm yàak jaawng dtǔua.
Jing: Very good! And what would you say to reserve a table at a restaurant?
Ben: ผมอยากจองโต๊ะ phǒm yàak jaawng dtó.
Jing: Right again. Additionally, we often use จอง jaawng in conjunction with the verb ไว้ wái meaning “to keep”.
Ben: I see, so จองไว้ jaawng wái means “to be holding a reservation”.
Jing: Exactly. And if the object of the sentence is stated, it will go between จอง jaawng and ไว้ wái. For example I can say...
ดิฉันจองตั๋วเครื่องบินไว้
dì-chǎn jaawng dtǔua khrûueang-bin wái.
Ben: “I’m holding the airplane tickets.” So the word order here is very important, isn’t it?
Jing: Yes. You have to think in Thai. If you translated everything in that sentence word for word you would have “I reserved ticket airplane keeping.”
Ben: Yes, better to just think in Thai. So let’s practice the sentence in Thai once more so we can get it down pat. For a female speaker, “I’m holding the airplane tickets.” is...
Jing: ดิฉันจองตั๋วเครื่องบินไว้ dì-chǎn jaawng dtǔua khrûueang-bin wái. So now, how would you say it for a man?
Ben: Simple, I’d just change to the male form of “I”, and say...
ผมจองตั๋วเครื่องบินไว้
phǒm jaawng dtǔua khrûueang-bin wái.
