INTRODUCTION
Jing: สวัสดีค่ะ sà-wàt-dii khâ
Ben: Ben here! Upper Beginner Season 1 , Lesson 7 - Which Thai city is full of beautiful ladies?
Jing: Hi, my name is Jing, and I am joined here by Ben: .
Ben: Hello, everyone and welcome back to ThaiPOD101.com
Jing: What are we learning in this lesson?
Ben: In this lesson you'll learn about เต็ม dtem and เต็มไปด้วย dtem bpai dûuai used to mean "full of".
Jing: This conversation takes place at the office of a travel agency in Bangkok.
Ben: It’s between Ploy and her co-worker, a travel guide.
Jing: The speakers are friends, therefore they will be speaking informal Thai.
Ben: Let’s listen to the conversation.

Lesson conversation

Ben: Let’s hear the conversation one time slowly.
Ben: Now let’s hear it with the English translation.
พลอย พลอยได้ยินว่า สาวที่เชียงใหม่สวยๆกันทั้งนั้น
Ben: I heard that all the ladies in Chiang Mai are beautiful.
มัคคุเทศก์ น่าจะใช่นะครับ เห็นมีประกวดนางงามเมื่อไหร่ จะต้องมีนางงามจากเชียงใหม่เข้ารอบสุดท้ายตลอด
Ben: That could be. Whenever I’ve seen a beauty pageant there’s always a beauty queen from Chiang Mai as a finalist.
พลอย เพราะอย่างนี้ ไกด์จึงแย่งกันลงชื่อจนเต็มทัวร์เชียงใหม่
Ben: It’s because of this that guides rush to sign up until the Chiang Mai tours are full.
มัคคุเทศก์ แต่สำหรับผม ชอบอากาศที่เย็นสบาย ในเมืองก็เต็มไปด้วยวัดเก่าๆสวยๆ
Ben: But as for me, I like the cool comfortable weather. The city is also filled with beautiful ancient temples.
พลอย แหม พลอยนึกว่าเต็มไปด้วยสาวๆสวยๆ
Ben: Oh! I think it’s because it’s filled with beautiful ladies!
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Ben: Hey Khru Jing, beauty pageants are really popular in Thailand, aren’t they?
Jing: Oh, yes. There is at least one beauty contest going on each day of the year somewhere in the country.
Ben: Really? That many?
Jing: Really. Just about every local festival includes a beauty contest. And there are also a few more unusual contests as well.
Ben: Such as?
Jing: Well, for starters, there is the Miss Tiffany contest. Here look at the picture of last year’s winner.
Ben: Wow! She’s really beautiful. But what makes this contest unusual?
Jing: Umm...Khun Ben: , this Miss Tiffany is actually a Mr.
Ben: Ahh...I see. It’s a ladyboy contest. Sure had me fooled.
Jing: Well one contest that won’t have you fooled is Miss Jumbo Queen.
Ben: Oh, I’ve heard about that. It’s a beauty contest for heavy women, right?
Jing: Yes. To enter you have to weigh over 80 kilograms, or about 176 pounds.
Ben: Next thing you know they’ll have a contest for overweight ladyboys.
Jing: Now that would be interesting!
Ben: OK, now let’s take a look at the vocabulary.

KEY VOCABULARY AND PHRASES
Ben: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson.
Jing: The first word is ทั้งนั้น tháng-nán
Ben: This is an adverb meaning “all of it” or “the whole bunch”.
Jing: Right. ทั้งนั้น tháng-nán will usually go at the end of the sentence, as in the example from the conversation... สาวที่เชียงใหม่สวยๆกันทั้งนั้น
sǎao thîi chiiang-mài sǔuai-sǔuai gan tháng-nán.
Ben: “All of the ladies in Chiang Mai are beautiful.” So when ทั้งนั้น tháng-nán comes at the end of the sentence it should refer to some noun that came earlier, right?
Jing: Yes. In this example ทั้งนั้น tháng-nán refers back to สาว sǎao, so it means “all the ladies”.
Ben: OK, what is the next phrase?
Jing: น่าจะใช่ nâa jà châi
Ben: This means “That is likely true.”
Jing: น่าจะ nâa jà acts as an auxiliary verb meaning “should be” or “ought to be”. And ใช่ châi means “yes” or “to be right”.
Ben: I think you could also translate น่าจะใช่ nâa jà châi as “I bet you’re right.”
Jing: Yes, that’s how we use it. You agree that what the other person just said is correct.
Ben: And the last phrase is....
Jing: เพราะอย่างนี้ phráw yàang-níi
Ben: This means “because of this” or “since it’s like this”.
Jing: That’s right. เพราะ phráw means “because”, and อย่างนี้ yàang-níi means “like this” or “in this way”.
Ben: You would use this as a conjunction that starts a sentence, right?
Jing: Yes. In the conversation we had... เพราะอย่างนี้ ไกด์จึงแย่งกันลงชื่อจนเต็มทัวร์เชียงใหม่ phráw yàang-níi gai jueng yâaeng gan long-chûue jon dtem thuua chiiang-mài.
Ben: “It’s because of this that guides rush to sign up until the Chiang Mai tours are full.” Alright, now let’s move on to the grammar section.

Lesson focus

Ben: The focus of this lesson is เต็ม dtem and เต็มไปด้วย dtem bpai dûuai used to mean "full of".
Jing: เต็ม dtem is the verb “to be full” or “to be filled with”. And เต็มไปด้วย dtem bpai dûuai is just a longer expression that means the same thing.
Ben: So are they totally interchangeable?
Jing: Not totally. They are used slightly differently. And it’s important to get the word order correct or you will get some very funny sentences.
Ben: OK. Let’s take เต็มไปด้วย dtem bpai dûuai first then. How do we use it?
Jing: When using เต็มไปด้วย dtem bpai dûuai you first state the noun which is being filled, then เต็มไปด้วย dtem bpai dûuai, and that is followed by the noun which fills up the first noun.
Ben: I think an example will make this easier to understand.
Jing: OK, how about this sentence...เมืองเชียงใหม่เต็มไปด้วยวัด
muueang chiiang-mài dtem-bpai-dûuai wát.
Ben: “The city of Chiang Mai is filled with temples.” So in this case the word order is the same as the English.
Jing: Yes. But when using just เต็ม dtem however, the word order is changed.
Ben: How is the order changed?
Jing: With เต็ม dtem, the noun that fills comes first, followed by เต็ม dtem, and the noun that is being filled comes last.
Ben: OK, let’s take a very simple sentence as an example.Using เต็ม dtem, how do you say “The bus is full of people”?
Jing: คนเต็มรถบัส khon dtem rót-bás.
Ben: I see. So now the word order is different from English.
Jing: Right. And that’s why you have to be really careful about the word order. If you think in English word order you might say something really funny like... รถบัสเต็มคน rót-bás dtem khon.
Ben: “The people are filled with buses.” Yeah, that’s definitely not right.
Jing: It does get just a little trickier though. If we simplify the sentence and only include the noun to state the object that gets filled without specifying what fills it, then the noun will come first.
Ben: Oh, I see.
Jing: In that case, we can simply say... รถบัสเต็ม rót-bás dtem.
Ben: “The bus is full.” How about we run through some of those sentences again to keep it all straight.
Jing: Sure.
Ben: Ready listeners? Please repeat after Khru Jing. First “The city of Chiang Mai is filled with temples.”
Jing: เมืองเชียงใหม่เต็มไปด้วยวัด
muueang chiiang-mài dtem-bpai-dûuai wát.
Ben: (pause) Next, “The bus is full of people”
Jing: คนเต็มรถบัส khon dtem rót-bás.
Ben: (pause) And finally, “The bus is full.”
Jing: รถบัสเต็ม rót-bás dtem.
Ben: (pause) Great job everyone. Keep reviewing so you get the word order right each time.
