Ben: Ben here! Upper Beginner Season 1 , Lesson 8 - Ganesha is loved even though he isn't Thai.

Jing: This conversation takes place at the office of a travel agency in Bangkok.
Ben: It’s between Ploy and her boss, the owner of the travel agency.
Jing: The speakers are of unequal social levels, therefore Ploy will be speaking polite Thai towards her superior.

Ben: I’ll consult with you about the feng shui of our company. Do you think it would be good to look for a Ganesha to worship?
พลอย ก็ดีเหมือนกันค่ะ ถึงเราจะมีเทพอื่นๆอยู่ แต่พระพิฆเนศก็สำคัญมากนะคะ
Ben: That would be good. Although we have other gods present, Ganesha is very important.

Ben: But I don’t know where to go look for one. Can you try asking your father?

Ben: I’m not sure. Even though my father likes to look at sacred images, I’ve never seen him get one to worship.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Ben: Hey Khru Jing, why are they talking about Ganesha in this conversation? I thought he was a Hindu god – aren’t Thais mostly Buddhist?
Jing: Ah, yes. We are. But just because we follow Buddha doesn’t mean we can’t ask for help from anyone else.
Ben: I see. Well, in that case, what can Ganesha help you with?
Jing: These days a lot of Thai businesses keep an image of Ganesha or พระพิฆเณศ phrá-phí-khá-nêet as he’s known in Thai.
Ben: I see.
Jing: He’s also associated with the arts, including music.
Ben: Oh, maybe that’s why I see his statue standing outside so many karaoke clubs.
Jing: Yeah, he’s there to help bring in customers. But I think the pretty ladies standing outside the karaoke club lure in more customers than Ganesha does.
Ben: You might be right. Now let’s take a look at the vocabulary.

KEY VOCABULARY AND PHRASES
Ben: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson.
Jing: The first phrase we’ll look at is.... เรื่องฮวงจุ้ย rûueang huuang-jûi
Ben: This phrase means “a matter of feng shui”.
Jing: Yes, that’s right. เรื่อง rûueang is a noun meaning “story”, “subject”, or “topic”. And ฮวงจุ้ย is the Thai word for the Chinese practice of feng shui.
Ben: So then you could follow เรื่อง rûueang with basically anything in order to say “It’s a matter of (that subject)”. Correct?
Jing: Yes, that’s correct.
Ben: Alright, then what’s the next phrase?
Jing: เช่ามาบูชา châo maa buu-chaa
Ben: This phrase means “to get for worship”.
Jing: Right. เช่า châo is the verb “to rent”.
Ben: So there are stores that rent out Buddha statues?
Jing: No, no. They don’t really rent it out. It’s just a figure of speech.
Thai people never use the verb ซื้อ súue, meaning “to buy”, when speaking about purchasing a sacred object such as a Buddha statue.
Ben: Why is that?
Jing: It’s thought that this type of object is too holy to be owned by someone. So instead the verb เช่า châo, meaning “to rent” is used.
Ben: OK, I can understand. What was the rest of the phrase?
Jing: มา maa is the verb “to come”. Its purpose here is just to show the direction of the main action moving towards the speaker. The last word is บูชา buu-chaa. It comes from the Sanskrit word puja. It can refer to any act of worship or offering.
Ben: That’s interesting. Let’s hear the whole phrase once more.
Jing: เช่ามาบูชา châo maa buu-chaa
Ben: “to get for worship”. Alright, now let’s move on to the grammar section.

Lesson focus
Ben: The focus of this lesson is ถึง...แต่... thǔeng...dtàae used to mean "even though".
Jing: ถึง thǔeng is usually the verb “to arrive”, however it can be used at the start of a sentence to mean “even if” or “even though”. When used like this there should be two sentences to complete the thought.
Ben: Let me guess, แต่ dtàae is going to go in between the two sentences.
Jing: Yes, that’s right. แต่ dtàae can be put in the middle to set the two statements apart.
Ben: I think we need an example to really see what you mean.
Jing: Of course. In the conversation, we had...ถึงเราจะมีเทพอื่นๆอยู่ แต่พระพิฆเนศก็สำคัญมากนะคะ
thǔeng rao jà mii thêep ùuen-ùuen yùu dtàae phrá-phí-khá-nêet gâaw sǎm-khan mâak ná khá.
Ben: “Even if we have other gods present, Ganesha is very important.” So the conjunction แต่ dtàae goes untranslated when we give the English meaning.
Jing: Yes, I think so. แต่ dtàae usually means “but”. However in this pattern, the English is more clear if that word is left unsaid.
Ben: Were there any more examples in this conversation?
Jing: Yes, we also had...ถึงพ่อจะชอบดูพระ แต่ก็ไม่เคยเห็นเช่ามาบูชาเลย
thǔeng phâaw jà châawp duu phrá dtàae gâaw mâi khooei hěn châo maa buu-chaa looei.
Ben: “Even though my father likes to look at sacred images, I’ve never seen him get one to worship.” Let’s take that one again in two parts.
Jing: Sure. ถึงพ่อจะชอบดูพระ thǔeng phâaw jà châawp duu phrá
Ben: “Even though my father likes to look at sacred images,”
Jing: แต่ก็ไม่เคยเห็นเช่ามาบูชาเลย dtàae gâaw mâi khooei hěn châo maa buu-chaa looei.
Ben: “I’ve never seen him get one to worship.”
Jing: You know, we also have another phrase you can use at the beginning in place of ถึง thǔeng. That is แม้ว่า máae-wâa. However this sounds more formal and is used more in writing than in regular speech.
Ben: OK, I got it. But just as an example could we substitute it into the previous sentence?
Jing: Sure. In that case, we could say...แม้ว่าพ่อจะชอบดูพระ แต่ก็ไม่เคยเห็นเช่ามาบูชาเลย
máae-wâa phâaw jà châawp duu phrá dtàae gâaw mâi khooei hěn châo maa buu-chaa looei.
Ben: “Even though my father likes to look at sacred images, I’ve never seen him get one to worship.”
