POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Ben: Hey Khru Jing, it looks like Ploy was really trying to sell the customer on seeing some of the Khmer ruins in Thailand, but they didn’t bite.
Jing: Yeah, she really seemed only interested in going to Angkor Wat. It’s too bad because some of the ruins in Thailand are quite nice as well.
Ben: Which ones do you think are the best?
Jing: Well, if you were only going to visit one, then I would definitely recommend Phanom Rung. It’s really quite impressive.
Ben: What makes it so great?
Jing: Well for starters it has a fantastic location. It was built up on the top of an extinct volcano.
Ben: Wow! I didn’t even know Thailand had any volcanoes.
Jing: And on top of that the main tower is still in pretty good condition, many of the stone carvings are still clear, and the main approach is quite majestic.
Ben: Khru Jing, you’ve really made me want to go see it now. Maybe you should be the one working at the travel agency.
Jing: Yeah, right.
Ben: OK, now let’s have a look at the vocabulary.

KEY VOCABULARY AND PHRASES
Ben: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson.
Jing: The first phrase we’ll look at is....
อยากทราบว่า yàak sâap wâa
Ben: This phrase is used when asking a question very politely.
Jing: Yes, that’s right. อยาก yàak is the verb “to want”, and ทราบ sâap is the polite form of the verb “to know”.
Ben: So literally, the phrase อยากทราบว่า yàak sâap wâa translates as “I want to know that...”
Jing: Right. However, since it will be followed by a complete question it is not necessary to include this phrase when giving an English translation.
Ben: What was the example from the conversation?
Jing: อยากทราบว่าที่นี่มีทัวร์ไปปราสาทนครวัดไหมคะ
yàak sâap wâa thîi-nîi mii thuua bpai bpraa-sàat ná-khaawn wát mǎi khá.
Ben: “Do you have any tours to Angkor Wat?” Now there’s another word in that sentence we want to talk about too. And that is...
Jing: ปราสาท bpraa-sàat
Ben: This is a noun that means “castle”.
Jing: Yes. But, in practice it is also used to refer to certain stone structures that may resemble a castle such as the stone temple ruins of the ancient Khmer civilization.
Ben: Got it. What’s the last phrase we want to look at?
Jing: อย่างเดียว yàang diiao
Ben: This phrase means “only one thing”.
Jing: Correct. อย่าง yàang is used as a classifier to mean a “thing” or a “type of thing”. And เดียว diiao is an adjective meaning “single” or “only”.
Ben: And how does this get used in a sentence?
Jing: อย่างเดียว yàang diiao will usually follow a noun. The purpose is to specify “only this (noun)”. The example from the conversation was...
ถ้าไปนครวัดอย่างเดียวล่ะคะ
thâa bpai ná-khaawn wát yàang diiao lâ khá.
Ben: “And if I just go to Angkor Wat only?”
Jing: That’s right. นครวัดอย่างเดียว ná-khaawn wát yàang diiao means “only Angkor Wat”.
Ben: Alright, let’s move on to the grammar section.

Lesson focus

Ben: The focus of this lesson is เช่น...เป็นต้น chên...bpen dtôn used to mean "such as" and "etc."
Jing: This pattern is used when you want to state part of a list or group of items.
Ben: OK, it sounds easy enough.
Jing: It is easy! เช่น chên means “for example”, and เป็นต้น means “etc.” So you just put a list of items in the middle of the two.
Ben: Do we need to include any word that means “and”?
Jing: With this type of pattern that is not necessary. Look at the example from the conversation...
ในเมืองไทยก็มีปราสาทเขมรเช่น ปราสาทหินพิมาย ปราสาทหินพนมรุ้ง ปราสาทหินเมืองต่ำ เป็นต้นค่ะ
nai muueang-thai gâaw mii bpraa-sàat khà-měen chên bpraa-sàat hǐn phí-maai bpraa-sàat hǐn phá-nom-rúng bpraa-sàat hǐn muueang-dtàm bpen-dtôn khâ.
Ben: “In Thailand there are also Khmer ruins such as Prasat Hin Phimai, Prasat Hin Phanom Rung, Prasat Hin Muang Tam, etc.”
Jing: The same pattern can be used for any number of subject or topics.
Ben: OK, in that case, how about I ask you a question, and you answer with this pattern.
Jing: OK!
Ben: คุณเคยไปประเทศอะไรบ้างครับ khun khooei bpai bprà-thêet à-rai bâang khráp. “What are some countries you’ve been to?”
Jing: ฉันเคยไปเที่ยวหลายประเทศเช่น ลาว เขมร อินเดีย จีน เป็นต้น
chǎn khooei bpai thîiao lǎai bprà-thêet chên laao khà-měen in-diia jiin bpen-dtôn.
Ben: “I have traveled to many countries such as Laos, Cambodia, India, China, etc.”
Jing: OK, now my turn to ask a question. คุณชอบดาราหญิงคนไหน khun châawp daa-raa-yǐng khon nǎi
Ben: Which actress do I like?
Jing: Yes.
Ben: ผมชอบหลายคนเช่น ชมพู่ พลอย เจี๊ยบ เป็นต้น phǒm châawp lǎai khon chên chom-phûu plaawy jíiap bpen dtôn.
“I like many such as Chompu, Ploy, Jiap, etc.”
Jing: Good job. And good taste in celebrities too, I might add.
Ben: Thanks Khru Jing.
