INTRODUCTION
Jing: สวัสดีค่ะ
Ja: Ja Here! Welcome back to ThaiPod101.com. This is Upper Intermediate Season 1, Lesson 10 - Is your lucky Thai Buddha real or an imitation?
Jing: ดิฉันจิงค่ะ
Ja: In this lesson you'll learn how to use “ปลอม bplaawm” to talk about something "fake".
Jing: This conversation takes place at a restaurant.
Ja: It’s between Pong and Bow.
Jing: The speakers are close to each other, so they’ll be using informal Thai.
Ja: Let’s listen to the conversation.
DIALOGUE
Ja: Now let's hear it with the English translation.
A: ตุ๊กตาสวยจังเลย ตั้งแต่เด็กโบว์ชอบตุ๊กตามากจนทุกวันนี้ โบว์ยังเก็บสะสมตุ๊กตามากมาย จากทั้งพี่แล้วก็คนอื่น ๆ ให้ ซื้อเองบ้าง แล้วพี่ป๋องล่ะคะ มีอะไรเป็นของสะสม
A: Dolls are beautiful. Since I was a kid, up until today, I've loved dolls. I've collected dolls from you and others who gave them to me. I've bought some myself. And what about you? Is there anything you collect?
B: ตอนเด็ก ๆ พี่ไม่มีหรอกจ้ะ พี่เพิ่งเริ่มมีตอนอายุสิบแปดปี ตอนได้เครื่องรางชิ้นแรกในชีวิตจากคุณพ่อ หลังจากนั้นพี่ก็เริ่มสะสมมาตลอด ของส่วนใหญ่ที่สะสมจะเป็นพระเครื่อง
B: When I was a child, there was nothing. I just started when I was eighteen years old, when I got the first amulet of my life from my father. After that, I started to collect them all the time. Most of the ones I collect are small Buddha amulets.
A: พระเครื่องเหรอ เขาว่ากันว่ามีของปลอมมากมายเต็มไปหมด พี่จะแยกออกมั้ยคะว่าอันไหนของจริง อันไหนของปลอม เพราะดูภายนอกแล้วก็เหมือนกัน
A: Buddha amulets? They say there are many fakes out there. How can you distinguish which ones are real and which are fake? Because they look the same on the outside.
B: พี่ใช้ความระมัดระวังมาก ใช้เวลาศึกษาประวัติความเป็นมาของทุกชิ้นก่อนเช่า ส่วนมากพี่จะเช่าต่อจากคนที่รู้จัก รับรองว่าไม่มีของปลอมแน่นอนจ้ะ
B: I use a lot of caution. I take time to study the history and background of each piece before I acquire it. Mostly, I keep renting from people I know. I assure you there are not any fakes.
A: เช่าเหรอ ทำไมต้องเช่าล่ะคะ ซื้อเลยไม่ได้เหรอ ถ้าพี่ป๋องไม่ซื้อแล้วจะสะสมได้ยังไง
A: You rent them? Why do you need to rent them? Can't you just buy them? If you aren't buying them, how can you collect them?
B: ฮ่า ๆ น้องโบว์ไม่เข้าใจ เขาไม่ใช้คำว่าซื้อกับเครื่องราง สิ่งศักดิ์สิทธิ์ ทุกชนิด เมื่อก่อนเขาให้กันฟรี ๆ ขึ้นอยู่กับความศรัทธาของแต่ละบุคคล เขาใช้คำว่าเช่าจ้ะ
B: Ha ha. You don't understand. People don't use the word "buy" with amulets or any type of sacred object. In the old days, they were given out for free. It was a matter of the people's faith. People use the word "rent."
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Ja: Hey Khru Jing, collecting amulets is serious business in Thailand, isn’t it?
Ja: Oh really? How can you get amulets for free?
Jing: บางครั้งถ้าเราไปวัด ทำบุญ พระท่านก็จะมอบเครื่องรางที่ทางวัดจัดทำขึ้นให้ึ่ค่ะ
Ja: Oh, I see. That’s nice. Is there any other place besides a temple to get a Buddha amulet without paying a lot of money?
Jing: มีค่้ะ ต้องไปที่ตลาดพระข้างวัดมหาธาตุในกรุงเทพ มีคนขายพวกเครื่องรางต่าง ๆ เยอะมากบนทางเดินด้านนอกของวัด
NEXT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
เหมาะสำหรับคนที่ต้องการหาเครื่องรางเป็นของฝากค่ะ
Ja: Wat Mahathat is near the Grand Palace isn’t it?
Jing: ถูกต้องค่ะ You can go see the Grand Palace and then shop for the Buddha amulet afterwards. It’s just a short walk from there.
Ja: Great. Thanks for that tip Khru Jing. โอเค เรามาดูคำศัพท์กันนะคะ Okay, now let’s move on to the vocab.

KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES
Ja: Let’s take a closer look at some of the words and phrases from this lesson. What’s first?
Jing: เขาว่ากันว่า khǎo wâa gan wâa
Ja: This phrase means “They say that...”.
Jing: ใช่ค่ะ
Ja: The first “ว่า wâa” is the verb “to say”, and the second “ว่า wâa” acts as the particle “that”. So a word-for-word translation of the phrase would be “They say together that...”.
Jing: เพื่อทำให้ประโยคสมบูรณ์เราต้องมี statement ตามหลังคำว่า “เขาว่ากันว่า” อย่างเช่น ตัวอย่างจากบทสนทนาของเราคือ…
เขาว่ากันว่ามีของปลอมมากมายเต็มไปหมด
khǎo wâa gan wâa mii khǎawng-bplaawm mâak-maai dtem bpai mòt.
Ja: “They say that there are many fakes out there.” ค่ะ แล้วคำต่อไปคืออะไรคะ
Jing: รับรองว่า ráp-raawng wâa
Ja: This phrase means “to guarantee that...”.
Jing: ถูกต้องค่ะ
Ja: “รับรอง ráp-raawng” is a verb that can mean “to guarantee”, “to certify”, or “to assure”. And “ว่า wâa” is used as the connecting particle “that”.
Jing: In a sentence, “รับรองว่า ráp-raawng wâa” will be followed by some statement to say what is being guaranteed or confirmed. ตัวอย่างจากบทสนทนาของเราคือ…
“รับรองว่าไม่มีของปลอมแน่นอน”
ráp-raawng wâa mâi mii khǎawng-bplaawm nâae-naawn.
Ja: “I assure you there are not any fakes.” OK Listeners, can you think of how to say “I guarantee that the food will be delicious”? (pause) Khru Jing, what’s the answer?
Jing: รับรองว่าอาหารจะอร่อย
Ja: ทุกคนตอบถูกกันไหมคะ โอเคค่ะ คำสุดท้ายที่เราจะเรียนกันคือคำว่าอะไรคะครูจิง
Jing: “สิ่งศักดิ์สิทธิ์ sìng-sàk-sìt”
Ja: This is a noun that means “sacred object”. It can refer to anything considered to be holy or anything that is thought to contain a higher power.
Jing: ใช่ค่ะ ในประเทศไทยมีหลายอย่างที่เราเรียกว่า “สิ่งศักดิ์สิทธิ์” นะคะ
Ja: ช่วยยกตัวอย่างได้ไหมคะ
Jing: “สิ่งศักดิ์สิทธิ์ sìng-sàk-sìt” can be an amulet. It can also be an image of Buddha or of a God or former king. Finally, it can be a sacred tree.
Ja: Wow, it definitely sounds like Thai people have a lot of places to turn for help.
Jing: ใช่ค่ะ เราไม่เลือกมากหรอกค่ะเวลาที่ขอความช่วยเหลือจากสิ่งศักดิ์สิทธิ์
Ja: ตอนนี้เรามาดู Grammar กันนะคะ Okay, now onto the grammar.
GRAMMAR POINT
Ja: In this lesson, you’ll learn about using “ปลอม bplaawm” to talk about something "fake".
Jing: “ปลอม bplaawm” is an adjective that means “fake” or “artificial”.
Ja: And in Thai, we put adjectives after the nouns that they describe.
Jing: ใช่ค่ะ ตัวอย่างเช่น “นาฬิกา” หมายความว่า “watch” ดังนั้น “นาฬิกาปลอม” ก็คือ “fake watch”.
Ja: I see. So that would be like an imitated Rolex that someone is selling on the street.
Jing: ใช่เลยค่ะ We also use “ปลอม bplaawm” a lot with the general noun “ของ khǎawng”, which means “thing”.
Ja: OK, so then “ของปลอม khǎawng bplaawm” means “fake thing” or simply “a fake”. เราพอจะมีตัวอย่างคำว่า “ของปลอม” ในบทสนทนาของเราไหมคะครูจิง
Jing: ใช่ค่ะ เรามีตัวอย่างตอนที่โบว์พูดว่า…
“เขาว่ากันว่ามีของปลอมมากมายเต็มไปหมด”
khǎo wâa gan wâa mii khǎawng bplaawm mâak-maai dtem bpai mòt.
Ja: “They say that there are many fakes out there.” Is “ปลอม bplaawm” always used as an adjective?
Jing: ไม่เสมอไปหรอกค่ะ คำว่า “ปลอม” อาจใช้เป็น verb หมายความว่า “forge”, “to copy”, or to “falsify”.
Ja: I see. Can you think of an example of how to use it as a verb?
Jing: มีสิคะ ลองฟังประโยคนี้ดูค่ะ…
“เขาโดนจับเพราะปลอมลายเซ็นคนอื่น”
khǎo doon jàp phráw bplaawm laai sen khon ùuen.
Ja: “He got arrested because he forged somebody else’s signature.”
Let’s look at this sentence in two parts. The first was...
Jing: เขาโดนจับเพราะ
Ja: “He got arrested because...”
Jing: ปลอมลายเซ็นคนอื่น
Ja: “...he forged the signature of another person.”
Jing: มีอีกหนึ่งวิธีที่เราสามารถใช้คำว่า “ปลอม” นะคะ
Ja: ยังไงคะ
Jing: เราสามารถทำให้เป็น compound verb คือคำว่า “ปลอมแปลง” หมายความว่า
“to counterfeit”.
Ja: OK, can you think of an example using “ปลอมแปลง bplaawm-bplaaeng” in a sentence?
Jing: ตำรวจกำลังหาคนที่ปลอมแปลงแบงค์ห้าร้อยบาท
dtam-rùuat gam-lang hǎa khon thîi bplaawm-bplaaeng ngoen baaeng hâa-ráawy bàat.
Ja: “The police are looking for the person who counterfeited 500 baht notes.” Alright, let’s look at this sentence in a few parts as well. The first was...
Jing: ตำรวจกำลังหา
Ja: “The police are looking for...”
Jing: คนที่ปลอมแปลง
Ja: “...the person who counterfeited...”
Jing: แบงค์ห้าร้อยบาท
Ja: “...500 baht notes.”

Outro

Jing: Well, that's all we've got time for!
