| A: Anyway, you should take an umbrella. I don't know why the world's weather is so strange now. I just saw in the news that it's extremely cold in Russia. People even died. |

| B: Oh, they're braces. I saw my friends had them, and everyone said they looked cute. People like to wear them, so I went to get some. Have a look. Aren't they pretty? |

| A: Your teeth are beautiful already. I don't think it's necessary to wear braces. |

| Jing: “ขนาดนั้น khà-nàat nán” |
| Ja: This phrase means “to that extent”. |
| Jing: ถูกต้องค่ะ |
| Ja: “ขนาด khà-nàat” means “size”, and “นั้น nán” means “that”. So another way to translate this phrase would be “of that magnitude”. |
| Jing: You can also replace “นั้น nán” with “นี้ níi”, meaning “this” to say “of this magnitude”. |
| Ja: Right. And we had one example of each from the conversation, didn’t we? |

| Jing: “แถม thǎaem” |
| Ja: This is a verb that means “to add” or “to give extra”. |
| Jing: ถูกต้องค่ะ ในบทสนทนาของเราคำนี้เป็นคำขึ้นต้นประโยคเช่น... |
| “แถมยังเป็นวันหยุดด้วย |
| thǎaem yang bpen wan-yùt dûuai.” |
| Ja: “Additionally, it’s a holiday.” So, in this case, we can use “แถม thǎaem” to begin a sentence to act like the preposition “additionally”. |
| Jing: เข้าใจถูกแล้วค่ะ |
| Ja: What’s the next phrase? |
| Jing: “มัวแต่ muua-dtàae” |
| Ja: This phrase means “to be absorbed in” or “to be concerned only with”. |
| Jing: ใช่ค่ะ In a sentence, “มัวแต่ muua dtàae” should be followed by some statement to show what the subject is absorbed in. |
| Ja: มีตัวอย่างจากบทสนทนาไหมคะครูจิง |
| Jing: มีค่ะ ตอนที่หมวยพูดว่า... “ถ้ามัวแต่กลัวผิวเสีย ก็ไม่ต้องออกไปไหนกันพอดี |
| thâa muua-dtàae gluua phǐu sǐia gâaw mâi dtâwng àawk bpai nǎi gan phaaw-dii.” |
| Ja: “If you are only concerned with your skin getting damaged, it’s just as well that you don’t go out anywhere.” So what was the key part of this sentence? |
| Jing: มัวแต่กลัวผิวเสีย |
| Ja: “to be concerned only with worrying about damaging your skin”. เอาละค่ะ เรามาต่อกันที่ Grammar เลยนะคะ. Okay, now onto the grammar. |
| GRAMMAR POINT |
| Ja: The focus of this lesson is using “จัด jàt” to mean "extremely". How is this different from the adverb “มาก mâak”? |
| Jing: ส่วนใหญ่เราจะใช้คำว่า “มาก” ในความหมายว่า “very” นะคะ แต่บางครั้งถ้าอยากจะอธิบายความรู้สึกที่สุด ๆ เกี่ยวกับอะไรบางอย่าง เราก็จะใช้คำว่า “จัด” แปลว่า “extremely” ค่ะ. |
| Ja: I see. So what you’re saying is that “จัด jàt” describes something more intensely than “มาก mâak”. |
| Jing: ถูกต้องค่ะ Also, we usually use “จัด jàt” for certain situations, such as describing extreme weather or strong colors. |

| Ja: Well, “แสงแดด sǎaeng dàaet” means “sunlight”, so “แสงแดดจัด sǎaeng dàaet jàt” should mean “extremely bright sunlight”. |

| Ja: In this sentence we used “จัด jàt” and “mâak มาก” together. |

| Ja: I see. Does it matter which one comes first? |

| Ja: OK, got it. If I ever want to say that it’s “extremely cold”, I’ll say “หนาวจัดมาก nǎao jàt mâak”. |
