INTRODUCTION
Jing: สวัสดีค่ะ
Ja: Ja Here! Welcome back to ThaiPod101.com. This is Upper Intermediate Season 1, Lesson 13 - Make Way for the Other Thai Drivers! In this lesson you'll learn about using “เปิดทาง bpòoet-thaang” to mean "opening the way".
Jing: This conversation takes place in a busy street.
Ja: The conversation is between Pong and Bow, who work together for an airline.
Jing: The speakers are close to each other, so they’ll be using informal Thai.
Ja: Let’s listen to the conversation.
DIALOGUE
Ja: Now let's hear it with the English translation.
A: รถคันข้างหน้า ขับรถได้แย่มากเลย พี่เปิดไฟขอทางหลายครั้งแต่เขาก็ไม่เปิดทางให้รถเราขับผ่านไป
A: The car in front is driving so terribly. I flashed the headlights many times, but he won't make way for our car to pass.
B: ใช่ค่ะ ขับรถก็ช้า แล้วยังไม่เปิดทางให้คนอื่น เขาไม่รีบแต่เรารีบ ถ้าไปขึ้นบินไม่ทัน จะโทษว่าเป็นความผิดของรถคันข้างหน้านี่แหละ
B: Yeah. He's driving so slowly, but still won't make way for anyone else. He's not in a hurry, but we are. If we're not in time for the flight, I'm going to say it's the fault of this car in front of us right here.
A: ดูซิขับข้ามเลนมาอีก พี่จะแซงก็ไม่ให้แซง คิดจะเบรกก็เบรก เบรกในระยะกระชั้นชิดขนาดนี้ถ้าพี่เบรกไม่ทันก็คงชนไปแล้ว
A: Look, he's crossing out of his lane, too. If I try to weave past, he won't let me overtake him. He thinks of braking and he just brakes. Braking in such a close space, if I can't brake in time I'll probably hit him.
B: นั่นไฟแดงแล้วแต่เขายังไม่ยอมหยุดเลย ขับฝ่าไฟแดงไปแล้ว จะรีบไปไหน จะช้าหรือเร็วก็ถึงอยู่ดี ควรจะขับด้วยความระมัดระวังเพื่อความปลอดภัยของเขาเองแล้วก็คนอื่นด้วย
B: Look at that! The light's red already, and he's not going to stop. He went through the red light! Where's he hurrying to? Going slow or fast, you'll all arrive anyway. He should drive with caution for his own safety, and for others', too.
A: ไฟแดงนี้พี่เห็นบ่อย คนฝ่าไฟแดงเยอะ เกิดอุบัติเหตุบ่อยมาก
A: I've seen a lot of people skip through this red light often. There are frequent accidents.
B: รถคันเดิมอีกละเมื่อกี้เขาฝ่าไฟแดงมาเหมือนจะรีบแต่เขาก็ยังขับช้าอยู่ดี พี่ป๋องระวังค่ะเหมือนเขาจะเลี้ยวแน่เลย ไฟเลี้ยวก็ไม่เปิด นิสัยแย่จริง ๆ
B: That same car, he just sped through the red light, but now he went back to driving slowly. Be careful—it's like he's about to turn. He didn't use his turning signal either. He's got really bad habits!
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Ja: Hey Khru Jing, what do you think about the way people drive in Thailand? อันตรายไหมคะ
Jing: ก็แล้วแต่ค่ะ บางคนก็ขับรถดี บางคนก็ขับไม่ดี แต่ละคนไม่เหมือนกัน
Ja: What should people look out for if they are driving in Thailand?
So if you are planning to rent a motorbike in Thailand it is probably a good idea to practice driving one in your home country first. เอาล่ะค่ะ เรามาดูคำศัพท์กันนะคะ Okay, now let’s move on to the vocab.

KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES
Ja: Let’s take a closer look at some of the words and phrases from this lesson. What’s first?
Jing: “เป็นความผิดของ... bpen khwaam-phìt khǎawng…”
Ja: This phrase means "It's the fault of..."
Jing: ใช่ค่ะ “ผิด” เป็น adjective หมายความว่า "wrong" หรือ "mistaken". Adding the prefix “ความ khwaam” gives us the noun “ความผิด khwaam-phìt”, meaning a "mistake" or "error".
Ja: So when you want to place the blame for a mistake on somebody, you can put this phrase before the person's name.
Jing: ใช่ค่ะ ตัวอย่างเช่น “เป็นความผิดของคุณจ๋า”
Ja: Hmm...I don't like that example so much. OK, what's the next phrase?
Jing: “เปิดไฟขอทาง bpòoet fai khǎaw thaang”
Ja: This phrase means "Turn on a light asking to go".
Jing: ใช่ค่ะ คำว่า “เปิดไฟ” หมายความว่า "to turn on a light", และคำว่า “ขอ” เป็น Verb หมายความว่า "to ask for". “ทาง” เป็น noun หมายความว่า "way" หรือ "path".
Ja: OK, so when would somebody use this?
Jing: เป็นเรื่องปกติ ที่คนขับรถในประเทศไทย จะกระพริบไฟ หรือเปิดไฟหน้ารถและปิดอย่างรวดเร็ว เพื่อเป็นการแสดงว่า ขอขับผ่านไปก่อนค่ะ
Ja: I see. So when you see another driver flash his lights it means he wants you to let him go first.
Jing: ใช่ค่ะ
Ja: And what was the whole phrase again?
Jing: “เปิดไฟขอทาง”
Ja: Great. Now what's the last phrase?
Jing: “เขายังไม่ยอมหยุด khǎo yang mâi yaawm yùt”
Ja: This means "He wouldn't stop".
Jing: ใช่ค่ะ คำว่า “ยอม” เป็น verb แปลว่า "to give in", และคำว่า “หยุด” เป็น verb อีกตัว แปลว่า "to stop".
Ja: So together, “ยอมหยุด yaawm yùt” means "to give in and stop" or "to yield". In the example from the conversation, the characters were talking about another driver who would not give in and stop his car despite the traffic light changing to red already. And that sentence was...
Jing: “ไฟแดงแล้วแต่เขายังไม่ยอมหยุดเลย
fai daaeng láaeo dtàae khǎo yang mâi yaawm yùt looei”
Ja: "The light is red, but he won't give in and stop at all." โอเค ตอนนี้เรามาดู grammar กันเลยนะคะ. Okay, now onto the grammar.
GRAMMAR POINT
Ja: The focus of this lesson is using “เปิดทาง bpòoet-thaang” to mean "opening the way". This is a verb phrase made up of two words.
Jing: ใช่แล้วค่ะ คำว่า “เปิด” เป็น verb "to open" และคำว่า “ทาง” เป็น noun หมายความว่า "way" หรือ "path".
Ja: And this phrase can be used in both a literal and in a figurative sense. In the conversation it was used in the literal sense. And what was the sentence?
Jing: “เขาก็ไม่เปิดทางให้รถเราขับผ่านไป
khǎo gâaw mâi bpòoet-thaang hâi rót rao khàp phàan bpai.”
Ja: "He won't make way for our car to pass." So in this sentence, “เปิดทาง bpòoet-thaang” means "to open up some space".
Jing: ใช่ค่ะ รถคันอื่นไม่เปิดให้มีที่ว่างพอที่รถของเราจะขับผ่านไปได้. So we can use “เปิดทาง bpòoet-thaang” to say "clear the way" for his car to get through.
Ja: What were the keywords in that sentence again?
Jing: เขาไม่เปิดทาง
Ja: "He won't open the way." Alright, I think we can see how to use “เปิดทาง bpòoet-thaang” in a physical sense. But how can it be used figuratively?
Jing: “ทาง thaang” can mean an "opportunity", a "chance", or a "way" to do something. So then, the phrase “เปิดทาง bpòoet-thaang” will mean "to give a chance", "make an opportunity", or "create a way".
Ja: I see. Can you think of any examples of how to use it in a sentence like this?
Jing: มีค่ะ ประโยคนี้เป็นยังไงคะ
การตั้งใจเรียนให้เก่งเป็นการเปิดทางให้ได้งานที่ดีทำในอนาคต
gaan dtâng-jai riian hâi gèeng bpen gaan bpòoet-thaang hâi dâai ngaan thîi dii tham nai à-naa-khót
Ja: "Focusing on studying well opens up a chance to get a good job in the future."
So in this case, เปิดทาง bpòoet-thaang means "to open up an opportunity".
Jing: ใช่ แล้วประโยคนี้ละค่ะ.....
การตั้งใจเรียนภาษาไทยให้เก่งเป็นการเปิดทางให้เข้าใจคนไทยได้มากขึ้น
gaan dtâng-jai riian phaa-sǎa-thai hâi gèeng bpen gaan bpòoet-thaang hâi khâo-jai khon-thai dâai mâak khûen.
Ja: "Focusing on studying Thai well opens up an opportunity to understand Thai people better."
Jing: ใช่แล้วค่ะ

Outro

Jing: That’s all for this lesson. Make sure you check the lesson notes, and we’ll see you next time.
Ja: Thanks for listening, bye!
Jing: สวัสดีค่ะ
