INTRODUCTION
Jing: สวัสดีค่ะ
Ja: Ja Here! Welcome back to ThaiPod101.com. This is Upper Intermediate Season 1, Lesson 14 - Green snacks are even greener in Thailand! In this lesson, you’ll learn about using special adverbs that go with particular adjectives to mean "very".
Jing: This conversation takes place at Bow's house.
Ja: It’s between Pong and Bow, a pair of coworkers who are dating.
Jing: The speakers are close to each other, so they’re using informal Thai.
Ja: Let’s listen to the conversation.
DIALOGUE
Ja: Now let's hear it with the English translation.
A: น้องโบว์ทำอะไรอยู่จ๊ะ น้ำอะไรน่ะ ทำไมถึงได้เขียวปี๋ขนาดนั้น
A: What are you doing, Bow? What kind of liquid is that? Why's it such a bright green color?
B: อ๋อ น้ำใบเตยค่ะ คุณแม่ให้โบว์คั้น จะเอาไปทำขนม พรุ่งนี้วันพระ คุณแม่จะไปทำบุญที่วัด เราก็เลยเตรียมของทำขนมกัน
B: Oh, it's pandan leaf juice. My mom had me squeeze it. She's going to use it to make sweets. Tomorrow is a holy day. Mom will go to make merit at the temple, so we're preparing things to make sweets with.
A: น้ำใบเตยทำขนมได้ด้วยเหรอ พี่กินเป็นอย่างเดียว ไม่รู้ว่าทำมาจากอะไร
A: You can make sweets with pandan leaf juice, too? I only eat them-I don't know what they're made from.
B: ทำได้ซิคะ ใบเตยมีประโยชน์หลายอย่าง ใช้ใส่ในขนม ทำให้มีสีเขียวน่ารับประทาน ใส่ในหม้ออบขนมเพื่อให้ขนมที่ได้มีกลิ่นหอม บางคนก็เอาใบเตยต้มกับน้ำดื่ม ก็จะได้น้ำดื่มที่มีกลิ่นหอม
B: Of course. Pandan leaf juice has many benefits. It's used in sweets to give them an appetizing green color. Use it in a baking pot so that the sweets have a fragrant aroma. Some people boil pandan leaves with drinking water to have sweet-smelling drinking water.
A: โหทำได้หลายอย่างจริง ๆ ด้วย แล้ววันนี้น้องโบว์จะทำขนมอะไรล่ะจ๊ะ
A: Wow, that can really do a lot of things. And what kind of sweets are you making today?
B: โบว์จะทำสังขยาใบเตยค่ะ พี่ป๋องอยากลองชิมไหม ถ้าอยากชิมต้องรอหน่อยนะคะ ต้องใช้เวลานานหน่อย แต่รับรองว่าอร่อยแน่นอนค่ะ
B: I'm making pandan leaf pudding to eat with bread. Do you want to try it? If you want to try some, you have to wait a little. It takes a long time. But I guarantee it will be delicious.
A: ฟังดูน่าทานขนาดนี้ นานขนาดไหนก็จะรอทานให้ได้จ้ะ มีอะไรให้พี่ช่วยรึเปล่าจ๊ะ ระหว่างรอ พี่ขอทำตัวให้เป็นประโยชน์ซักนิดก็ดี
A: You make it sound so good that no matter how long I have to wait, I will wait to eat some. Is there anything I can help with while I wait? I'd like to make myself useful.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Ja: Hey Khru Jing, what was the leaf that they were talking about in this conversation?
Jing: They were talking about pandan leaf. คนไทยเรียกว่า ใบเตยค่ะ

Ja: I see. Is it used for any other foods?
Jing: ใช้ได้ค่ะ อาจจะใช้ใบเตย เวลาหุ้งข้าวและอาหารอื่นก็ได้
Ja: Is there any way to use the word “ใบเตย” besides cooking?
Jing: คำว่า “ใบเตย” สามารถใช้เป็นชื่อของผู้หญิงก็ได้ค่ะ มีนักร้องชื่อดังคนหนึ่งชื่อ ใบเตย ด้วยนะคะ

KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES
Ja: Let’s take a closer look at some of the words and phrases from this lesson. What’s first?
Jing: “ฟังดูน่าทาน fang duu nâa thaan”
Ja: This phrase means "it sounds so good to eat".
Jing: ถูกต้องค่ะ “ฟัง fang” is the verb "to listen", “ดู duu” is the verb "to see", and “ทาน thaan” is the polite form of the verb "to eat".
Ja: Then we have “น่า nâa” put before the verb "to eat". Why is it there?
Jing: เราพูดว่า “น่ากิน” ในความหมายว่า "is worthy of being eaten" หรือ "is good for eating".
Ja: OK, so what is the next phrase?
Jing: “ทำตัวให้เป็นประโยชน์ tham dtuua hâi bpen bprà-yòot”
Ja: This is a phrase that means "make oneself useful".
Jing: ใช่ค่ะ “ตัว dtuua” is the noun "body", which in this case is the body of the person speaking. The verb “ให้ hâi” is used in this sentence to mean "so that" or "in order to". And “ประโยชน์ bprà-yòot” is a noun that means "benefit".
Ja: So a loose word-for-word translation would be "do something with my body so that it is a ‘benefit’".
Jing: ใช่ค่ะ
Ja: And what was the whole phrase again?
Jing: ทำตัวให้เป็นประโยชน์
Ja: Alright, what's the last phrase?
Jing: ใช้ใส่ในขนม chái sài nai khà-nǒm
Ja: This means "it's used for making sweets."
Jing: ถูกต้องค่ะ
Ja: “ใช้ chái” is the verb "to use", and “ใส่ sài” is the verb "to put in" or "to add".
Jing: ส่วนคำว่า “ในขนม” แปลว่า "inside sweets" หรือ "in snacks".
Ja: So it's kind of like saying "it's put inside when making snacks". Can you please repeat the whole phrase in Thai again?
Jing: ใช้ใส่ในขนม
Ja: โอเคค่ะ ตอนนี้เรามาดู grammar กันนะคะ. Okay, now onto the grammar.
GRAMMAR POINT
Ja: In this lesson, you’ll learn about using special adverbs that go with particular adjectives to mean "very".
Jing: ใช่ค่ะ In general, we can use “มาก mâak” to mean "very". But there are many adjectives that have special adverbs to go with them, in order to give the meaning "very" or "extremely".
Ja: A few examples of this type of special adverb from English are the phrases "pitch black", "brand new", and "piping hot". We could have said "very hot", but the expression "piping hot" is more descriptive. What is an example in Thai?
Jing: ตัวอย่างหนึ่งจากบทสนทนาก็คือ “เขียวปี๋” แปลว่า "bright green".
Ja: Notice that the word order is the opposite of English. In Thai, the adjective comes before an adverb that modifies it. What is the whole sentence for this example?
Jing: ทำไมถึงได้เขียวปี๋ขนาดนั้น
tham-mai thǔeng dâai khǐiao bpǐi khà-nàat nán.
Ja: "Why’s it such a bright green color?" OK Khru Jing, Can you tell us some more of these pairs?
Jing: ได้สิคะ
Ja: Great. How do you say "bright red"
Jing: แดงแจ๋
Ja: Alright. Now, how about "bright yellow"
Jing: เหลืองอ๋อย
Ja: OK, and now how about "brilliant white"
Jing: ขาวจั๊วะ
Ja: Alright, how about we practice all of these once more. Listeners, please repeat after Khru Jing. First is "bright yellow".
Jing: เหลืองอ๋อย
Ja: (pause) Now, "bright red"
Jing: แดงแจ๋
Ja: (pause) Now, "brilliant white"
Jing: ขาวจั๊วะ
Ja: (pause) And finally, "bright green"
Jing: เขียวปี๋
Ja: (pause) Great job everyone! Khru Jing, are there any pairs like this besides color adjectives?
Jing: มีค่ะ อย่างเช่น “แพงหูฉี่”
Ja: Let's see. “แพง” means "expensive". So I'm guessing that “แพงหูฉี่” means "so very expensive".
Jing: เข้าใจถูกแล้วค่ะ
Ja: There are a few more of these pairs that we didn't have time to cover in the lesson. So be sure to check out the lesson notes everybody!

Outro

Jing: Well, that's all we've got time for! We hope you've enjoyed learning with us. Please be sure to check the lesson notes for further information.
Ja: See you again soon.
Jing: แล้วเจอกันใหม่ค่ะ
