| A: I noticed in many shops we walked past that some have a beckoning maiden, some have a magic diagram, and some shops have both. It's not only in all the shops, but cars also have magic diagrams. Do they have any in the plane's cockpit? What are they for? |

| B: The beckoning maiden in the shops, well in the olden days people kept them because they believed it helped to attract customers. But these days it's changed to the beckoning cat. I don't know why. |

| B: Oh, if they are in a shop, there are two beliefs. The first one is that money flows in and doesn't leak out. And the second belief is to keep you safe from robbers. As for the ones in cars, they are for driving safely, helping to avoid accidents. And as for in airplanes, we don't have any. |

| Ja: Well, I’ve seen lots of them in different shops and some people’s homes before. And I noticed that most of them have some writing that looks almost like Thai letters, but I can’t read any of them. Is that some kind of secret alphabet they use? |

| Ja: This phrase means “to flow in”. |
| Jing: ใช่แล้วค่ะ |
| Ja: ไหล lǎi is the verb “to flow”, and เท thee is the verb “to pour”. มา maa is the verb “to come”, and it’s used with both of the other verbs to show the direction of the action moving towards the speaker. So the whole phrase ไหลมาเทมา lǎi maa thee maa means “to flow and pour in”. |

| Ja: เกิด gòoet is the verb “to be born”, but it can also mean “to occur” or “to arise”. |

| Ja: This phrase means “both of them”. |
| Jing: ถูกต้องค่ะ |
| Ja: อย่าง yàang is a noun that means a “type” or “kind” in this case, so สองอย่าง sǎawng yàang means “two kinds”. ทั้ง tháng means “both” or “all”. I |

| Ja: In this lesson, you’ll learn how to use กลายเป็น glaai-bpen to say "changed to become..." |
| Jing: คำว่า กลายเป็น มาจากกิริยาสองตัวรวมกัน |
| Ja: กลาย glaai means “to change” or “to alter”, and เป็น bpen is the verb “to be”. So together, กลายเป็น glaai-bpen means “to change to be”, “to become” or “to turn into”. |
| Jing: ในประโยค คำว่า กลายเป็น อยู่ตรงกลางระหว่างคำนาม (noun) เราสามารถพูดได้ว่า noun ที่หนึ่งเปลี่ยนเป็น noun ที่สอง |
| Ja: But sometimes we can leave out the first noun if the speaker and listener already know the subject. In the example of the conversation, the first noun was omitted like this. And what was that sentence, Khru Jing? |

| Ja: “But these days it’s changed to be the beckoning cat.” |

| Ja: I see. นางกวัก naang-gwàk is the “beckoning maiden” statue found in many shops. How would the sentence sound if we included the subject? |
| Jing: แต่ปัจจุบันนี้ นางกวักกลายเป็นแมวกวักไปแล้ว |
| dtàae bpàt-jù-ban níi naang-gwàk glaai-bpen maaeo-gwàk bpai láaeo. |
| Ja: “But these days the beckoning maiden has changed to the beckoning cat.” |
| Jing: ใช่แล้วค่ะ |
| Ja: One common way to use กลายเป็น glaai-bpen is when the noun before and the noun after are the same noun, only with different adjectives attached to each. This is a way to say that some quality of the noun has changed or altered. |

Indeed, recently beckoning maidens are being replaced by beckoning cats, which are actually quite cute. Beckoning cats are originally from the Japanese tradition. Isn't it surprising that both Thais and Japaneses have the same tradition of attracting income with beckoning maidens or cats? Have you seen any of them anywhere?

ต่างหาก "on the other hand/instead" is not need in the first sentence / ค้น google ค่ะ ไม่ใช่ คุณ google / ลงโทษ เขียนแบบนี้ค่ะ เทพตัดสินใจลงโทษกบตัวนี้ /ตัดขาหนึ่งข้างของกบ แล้วเอาขานั้นใส่ไว้ใน "ก้น" ของกบ หลังจากนั้น กบตัวนี้ก็ทำให้ "เงินทองไหลมาเทมา (และ)ไม่รั่วไหล" Hope that helps. เขาว่ากันว่า กบนี้เป็นสัตว์โบราณที่อัตราย ชอบปล้นและกินเงินทอง
วันหนึ่ง เทพตัดสินใจไปลวโทษกบนี้ ตัดขาหนึ่งตัวของกบ แล้วค่อยวางขานั้นไว้ใน "bottom" ของกบ

I have a question. How to say bottom or butt in a sophisticated/polite way in Thai?
Can you explain the meaning of the sentence ดังตัวอย่างด้านล่างนี้ please? Is it like "like in the example below"?
ตัวอย่าง is example, right? But what's ดัง?
