INTRODUCTION
Jing: สวัสดีค่ะ
Ja: Hi everyone! Ja Here! Welcome back to ThaiPod101.com. This is Upper Intermediate Season 1, Lesson 21 - I'm not fat, I just have a Thai coconut curry belly! In this lesson you will learn about using special adverbs that go with particular adjectives.
Jing: This conversation takes place at Bow's house.
Ja: It’s between Pong and his girlfriend Bow.
Jing: The speakers are close to each other, so they’ll be using informal Thai.
DIALOGUE
Ja: Now let's hear it with the English translation.
A: ว้าวโบว์ทำแกงกะทิของโปรดพี่เหรอจ๊ะ หอมน่ากินจัง สงสัยวันนี้พี่จะกินข้าวได้เยอะกว่าทุกวัน
A: Wow! You made my favorite coconut milk curry? It smells delicious. I suspect I'm going to eat more than usual today.
B: I see you eat a lot every day. Don't you? You really like coconut milk curry. Isn't it because you like every kind of food and dessert that has coconut milk that you look chubby like this? The coconut tree behind the house is all out of coconuts. I have to go buy them at the market.
A: โบว์ก็พูดเกินไป พี่ไม่ได้อ้วนซะหน่อย แค่น้ำหนักขึ้นมาเล็กน้อย ใส่กางเกงยีนส์ตัวเก่าไม่ได้เท่านั้นเอง
A: You've said too much. I'm not fat. I'm just a little bit heavier. I just can't fit into my old pair of jeans, that's all.
B: ตอนที่พี่ซื้อตุ๊กตาหมีมาให้ในวันเกิดโบว์ แทบแยกไม่ออกเลยว่าอันไหนคนอันไหนตุ๊กตาหมีเพราะดูกระปุ๊กลุกน่ารักเท่ากันเลย ฮ่า ๆ
B: When you bought me the teddy bear for my birthday, I almost said "Which is the person, and which is the teddy bear?" because you looked as cute and chubby as the bear. Ha-ha.
A: พี่อยากให้เจ้าตุ๊กตาหมีเป็นตัวแทนของพี่อยู่ใกล้ ๆ โบว์ไงจ๊ะ จะได้รู้สึกว่ามีพี่อยู่ด้วยตลอดเวลา พี่น่ารักไหมละ
A: I wanted the teddy bear to be my substitute close to you. You can feel like you have me by your side, always. Does that make me cute?
B: ค่ะ เข้าใจหาข้ออ้างจริง ๆ เลยนะพี่ป๋อง อาหารเสร็จแล้วมาทานข้าวกันเถอะค่ะ หรือพี่ป๋องจะไปออกกำลังกายก่อนดีไหม
B: Yes, that's a good excuse. The food is ready-let's eat. Or do you want to go work out first, instead?
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Ja: Hey Khru Jing, is coconut milk the liquid that you can drink that’s inside a coconut?
Jing: No, that's the coconut juice. ภาษาไทยเรียกว่า น้ำมะพร้าวค่ะ Coconut milk comes from grating the meat of the coconut.
Ja: Oh, I see. How are they different?
Jing: น้ำมะพร้าวมีรสชาติหวาน ดื่มเพื่อความสดชื่นได้ แต่น้ำกะทิเป็นน้ำสีขาวข้น มัน ๆ ค่ะ
Ja: So if it's oily what is it good for?
Jing: น้ำกะทิเหมาะสำหรับทำแกงต่าง ๆ เช่นแกงกะทิค่ะ การนำกะทิและเครื่องแกงมาผสมกัน จะให้รสชาติอาหารไทยที่เป็นเอกลักษณ์ค่ะ
Ja: Yes, Thai curries really are something special. Even if it is a little high in fat, I'm glad we have coconut milk. โอเค เรามาดูคำศัพท์กันนะคะ.

KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES
Ja: Let’s take a closer look at the usage of some of the words and phrases from this lesson. What’s first?
Jing: “หอมน่ากินจัง hǎawm nâa-gin jang”
Ja: This phrase means "It smells really tasty."
Jing: ถูกต้องค่ะ คำว่า “หอม” สามารถใช้เป็น adjective หมายความว่า "fragrant" หรือเป็น verb หมายความว่า "to smell good". และคำว่า “น่ากิน” หมายความว่า "sounds tasty" หรือ "looks delicious".
Ja: When we put “น่า nâa” before a verb it means "worthy of". So in this case “น่ากิน nâa-gin” is "worthy to eat".
Jing: That's right, but I don't think "worthy to eat" sounds natural in English.
Ja: No it doesn't. That's why it's better to translate “น่ากิน” as "sounds yummy" or "looks tasty" depending on the situation. OK, what's the next phrase?
Jing: “ไม่ได้อ้วนซะหน่อย mâi dâi ûuan sá nàwy”
Ja: This phrase means "No, I'm not fat".
Jing: ถูกต้องค่ะ “ไม่ได้ mâi dâi” means "didn't do" when it comes before a verb.
Ja: And in this case, the verb is "to get fat".
Jing: ใช่ค่ะ อ้วน ûuan is an adjective "fat". But in this sentence, it functions like a verb meaning "to get fat".
Ja: So then the phrase “ไม่ได้อ้วน mâi dâi ûuan” would mean "I didn't get fat."
Jing: ถูกต้องค่ะ
Ja: What about the last part of the sentence? “ซะหน่อย”
Jing: “ซะหน่อย” actually means something like “just a bit”. But we usually use ไม่ before the verb and ซะหน่อย at the end of the sentence when we want to disagree with a statement.
Ja: So we usually use this pattern to emphasize the opposite opinion, like when Pong disagree with Bow about him being fat. It’s like you’re saying “that’s not even a bit true”. Alright. What's the last phrase?
Jing: แค่น้ำหนักขึ้นมาเล็กน้อย khâae nám-nàk khûen maa lék náawy
Ja: This phrase means "I just got a little bit heavier".
Jing: ถูกต้องค่ะ คำว่า “น้ำหนัก” เป็น noun หมายความว่า "weight", และคำว่า “ขึ้ันมา” หมายความว่า "to increase" หรือ "to come up".
Ja: What about the word “เล็กน้อย lék náawy” ?
Jing: เล็กน้อย means "a little bit". The phrase also started with the word “แค่ khâae” meaning "only" or "just".
Ja: So a word-for-word translation would be "Just the weight increased a little bit".
Jing: ถูกต้องค่ะ แค่น้ำหนักขึ้นมาเล็กน้อย
Ja: เอาละ ตอนนี้เรามาดูไวยากรณ์กันนะคะ - Okay, now onto the grammar.
GRAMMAR POINT
Ja: In this lesson, you’ll learn about using special adverbs that go with particular adjectives.
Jing: You might remember that we learned some of these in lesson 14.
Ja: That's right. Khru Jing, can you refresh our listeners’ memory with an example?
Jing: แน่นอนค่ะ ตัวอย่างหนึ่งก็คือ “แดงแจ๋” หมายความว่า "bright red".
Ja: So these were mostly special adverbs that can be paired with certain adjectives instead of just using the standard “มาก mâak” to mean "very".
Jing: ถูกต้องค่ะ In lesson 14, most of the special adverbs we learned are for use with color adjectives.
Ja: How are the adverbs in this lesson going to be different?
Jing: The words in this lesson are mostly used with adjectives describing shapes and sizes.
Ja: OK, that sounds good. Can you tell us any examples that we had in the dialogue?
Jing: ตัวอย่างหนึ่งในบทสนทนาของเราก็คือ...
อ้วนกระปุ๊กลุก ûuan grà-búk-lúk.
Ja: The adjective อ้วน ûuan means "fat". So what does the whole phrase อ้วนกระปุ๊กลุก mean?
Jing: หมายความว่า "to be chubby in a cute way".
Ja: I see. Which sentence was it used in?
Jing: ไม่ใช่เพราะพี่ชอบอาหารและขนมหวานทุกอย่างที่ใส่กะทิเหรอ ถึงได้ดูอ้วนกระปุ๊กลุกแบบนี้
mâi châi phráw phîi châawp aa-hǎan khà-nǒm-wǎan thúk yàang thîi sài gà-thí rǒoe thǔeng dâai duu ûuan grà-búk-lúk bàaep-níi.
Ja: "Isn’t it because you like every kind of food and dessert that has coconut milk, that you look chubby like this?" Alright, well what are some of the other adjective -adverb pairs?
Jing: สูงปรี๊ด
Ja: "extremely tall"
Jing: ถ้าคุณเห็นนักบาสเก็ตบอล คุณอาจจะพูดว่า เขาสูงปรี๊ด
Ja: Yes, most basketball players are fairly tall. What else do we have?
Jing: ยาวเฟื้อย
Ja: "extremely long"
Jing: ใช่ค่ะ ตัวอย่างคือ เห็นงูยาวเฟื้อยหลังบ้าน
Ja: "I saw an extremely long snake behind the house." Any others?
Jing: สั้นจุ๊ดจู๋
Ja: "Really short". Can you use it in a sentence?
Jing: สาว ๆ บางคนชอบใส่กระโปรงสั้นจุ๊ดจู๋

Outro

Ja: "Some girls like to wear extremely short skirts." Alright well, we still have a few more of these special adverbs that we didn't have time to cover in the lesson, so be sure to check out the lesson notes. Thanks for listening. See you again soon.
Jing: แล้วเจอกันใหม่ค่ะ
