INTRODUCTION
Jing: สวัสดีค่ะ
Ja: Ja Here! Welcome back to ThaiPod101.com. This is Upper Intermediate Season 1, Lesson 8 - We're here anyway, so let's watch the Thai drama.
Jing: ดิฉันจิงค่ะ
Ja: In this lesson you'll learn how to use ไหนๆก็ไหนๆ nǎi-nǎi-gâaw-nǎi-nǎi to mean "anyways" or “in any case”.
Jing: This conversation takes place at a theater.
Ja: It’s between Pong and Bow, two co-workers out on a date together.
Jing: The speakers are close to each other, so they’ll be using informal Thai.
Ja: Let’s listen to the conversation.
DIALOGUE
Ja: Now let's hear it with the English translation.
A: พี่ป๋องพาโบว์มาดูโขนเนี่ยนะคะ ไม่เห็นสนุกเลย ตัวแสดงพูดอะไรก็ไม่รู้ ไม่เห็นจะเข้าใจเลย
A: Pong, you took me to see khon. I don't see how it can be fun. I don't understand what the actors are saying. I can't understand it at all.
B: พี่ว่าสนุกดีนะ ที่โบว์ไม่ชอบอาจเป็นเพราะไม่รู้และไม่เข้าใจเนื้อเรื่อง ถึงทำให้รู้สึกไม่สนุก ถ้าสงสัยอะไรก็ถามพี่ได้ หลังจากนี้ถ้ามีเวลาพี่จะเล่าให้ฟังว่าเรื่องราวเป็นยังไงดีมั้ย
B: I think it's fun. You don't like it because you don't know or understand the plot. That makes it unenjoyable. If you are wondering about anything, you can ask me. After this, if we have time, I'll tell you about the story, OK?
A: ค่ะ ไหนๆก็ไหนๆละ โบว์จะตั้งใจดูจนจบเรื่องก็แล้วกันค่ะ
A: OK. Well, anyway, I might as well pay attention until the end of the play.
B: ดีมากจ้ะ ไหนๆก็มาแล้วอย่าให้เสียเที่ยว หลังโขนจบเดี๋ยวพี่พาไปเลี้ยงข้าว พี่จำได้ว่าร้านโปรดของโบว์อยู่แถวนี้
B: Very good. In any case, you came here, so don't waste the trip. After the khon is finished, I'll take you out to eat. I remember that your favorite restaurant is in this area.
A: พี่ป๋องเนี่ยรู้ใจโบว์ที่สุดเลย รู้ด้วยว่ากำลังหิวแถมยังจำได้อีกว่ามีร้านโปรดอยู่แถวนี้ อย่างนี้ค่อยมีกำลังใจดูโขนจนจบหน่อย
A: You know me so well. You also know that I'm hungry and even remember that my favorite restaurant is around here. Because of this, I can watch the khon until it's done.
B: ก็พี่เป็นคนรู้ใจของโบว์ ต้องรู้และเข้าใจ ว่าโบว์ต้องการอะไรเวลาไหน จริงไหม
B: Yeah, I know you. I have to know and understand what you need, and when. Isn't that true?
A: จ้า ขอบคุณมากค่ะ
A: Yes. Thank you very much.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Ja: Hey Khru Jing, what exactly is this khon that they are watching?
Jing: อ๋อ โขน เป็นละครเพลงพื้นบ้าน ตัวละครส่วนใหญ่ใส่หน้ากากเพื่อให้ดูเหมือนยักษ์และลิง
Ja: Wow, demons and monkeys! it sounds interesting. ทำไมโบว์ถึงเบื่อไม่อยากดูโขนล่ะคะ
Jing: โขนเป็นละครสมัยเก่าและการดำเนินการแสดงใช้เวลาค่อนข้างนาน โบว์ก็เหมือนกับวัยรุ่นทั่วไปในประเทศของคุณที่รู้สึกเบื่อเมื่อดู Opera หรือละครของ Shakespeare
Ja: I see. And what’s the story about? Why are there a bunch of monkeys and demons?
Jing: โขนเป็นละครเก่าแก่มาจากประเทศอินเดีย The main character is a king called Rama, who is really a God. A demon king steals his wife, so he gets an army of monkeys to help him fight the demons and get her back.
Ja: ว้าว ฟังดูน่าตื่นเต้นจังค่ะ Hey, is this the same Rama that the kings are named after?
Jing: Yes, it is. King Rama is like an ideal king from legend.
Ja: I see. So that explains why the khon drama is so important.
Jing: ใช่เลยค่ะ
Ja: โอเค เรามาดูคำศัพท์กันดีกว่าค่ะ Okay, now let’s move on to the vocab.

KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES
Ja: Let’s take a closer look at some of the words and phrases from this lesson.
Jing: เสียเที่ยว sǐia thîiao
Ja: This phrase means “to waste a trip”.
Jing: ถูกต้องค่ะ
Ja: เสีย sǐia is the verb “to spoil” or “to waste”, and เที่ยว thîiao is another verb that means “to travel” or “to go out for leisure”. So if you put them together, เสียเที่ยว sǐia thîiao would be “wasting travel” or “spoiling an excursion”.
Jing: ใช่ค่ะ ตัวอย่างประโยคจากบทสนทนาของเราคือ…
“ไหน ๆ ก็มาแล้วอย่าให้เสียเที่ยว”
nǎi-nǎi gâaw maa láaeo yàa hâi sǐia thîiao.
Ja: “In any case, you came already, so don’t waste the trip.” เอาละค่ะ คำต่อไปคืออะไรคะครูจิง
Jing: รู้ใจ rúu-jai
Ja: This expression means “to know one’s heart”.
Jing: ใช่คะ
Ja: รู้ rúu is the verb “to know”, and ใจ jai means “heart” or “mind”. Therefore, รู้ใจ rúu-jai means to know what someone else is thinking.
Jing: หรือจะพูดว่า “to know what’s in someone’s heart.” ก็ได้
Ja: อ๋อ แล้วเรามีตัวอย่างประโยคจากบนสนทนาไหมคะครูจิง
Jing: มีค่ะ โบว์พูดว่า... พี่ป๋องเนี่ยรู้ใจโบว์ที่สุดเลย
phîi bpǎwng nîia rúu-jai boo thîi-sùt looei.
Ja: “Pong, you know me so well.” แล้วสุดท้ายที่เราจะได้เรียนกันคืออะไรคะครูจิง
Jing: ไม่เห็นสนุกเลย mâi hěn sà-nùk looei
Ja: This phrase means “It doesn’t sound fun at all.”
Jing: ถูกต้องค่ะ
Ja: เห็น hěn is the verb “to see”, but it can also be used sometimes to mean “to see it as” or “to consider it so”.
Jing: ใช่ค่ะ ในกรณีนี้หมายถึงเห็นด้วยจิตใจและความรู้สึกไม่ใช่เห็นด้วยตานะคะ “ไม่เห็นสนุกเลย” ในที่นี้แปลว่า “I don’t see how it could be enjoyable” or “I wouldn’t consider it any fun at all.”
Ja: OK, so this is a useful phrase anytime one of your friends wants to take you somewhere that doesn’t sound fun.
Jing: ใช่ค่ะ ถ้าเพื่อน ๆ อยากให้คุณทำอะไรที่น่าเบื่อและคุณไม่อยากทำ คุณก็สามารถบอกพวกเขาว่า... ไม่เห็นสนุกเลย
Ja: เอาละค่ะ ตอนนี้เรามาดู Grammar กันดีกว่า Okay, now onto the grammar.
GRAMMAR POINT
Ja: In this lesson, you’ll learn about using ไหน ๆ ก็ไหน ๆ nǎi-nǎi-gâaw-nǎi-nǎi to mean "anyways" or “in any case”.
Jing: The phrase ไหนๆก็ไหนๆ nǎi-nǎi-gâaw-nǎi-nǎi can be used before a sentence to mean “anyways” as in “Well anyways, we already did this, so we might as well do that.”
Ja: I think this is one of those grammar points where an example will really help illustrate the way to use it.
Jing: ใช่ค่ะ ฉันก็ว่าอย่างนั้น เพื่อความเข้าใจในการใช้คำว่า ไหน ๆ ก็ไหน ๆ เรามาดูตัวอย่างจากบทสนทนากันนะคะ…
“ไหน ๆ ก็ไหน ๆ ละ โบว์จะตั้งใจดูจนจบเรื่องก็แล้วกันค่ะ”
nǎi-nǎi-gâaw-nǎi-nǎi lá. boo jà dtâng-jai duu jon jòp rûueang gâaw láaeo gan khâ.
Ja: “Well anyways, I might as well pay attention and watch until the end of the play.” OK, this was kind of a long sentence, so let’s break it down into parts. First was...
Jing: ไหน ๆ ก็ไหน ๆ ละ
Ja: “Well anyways”
Jing: โบว์จะตั้งใจ
Ja: “I might as well pay attention”
Jing: ดูจนจบเรื่อง
Ja: “watch until the end of the play”
Jing: ก็แล้วกันค่ะ
Ja: “as there is no other choice” So basically, what Bow is saying is that even though she’s bored and doesn’t understand the show, she’s going to keep watching anyways until it’s finished.
Jing: ถูกต้องค่ะ เราสามารถทำให้คำว่า ไหน ๆ ก็ไหน ๆ ให้สั้นลงได้กลายเป็น ไหน ๆ ก็
Ja: Did we have an example of that in the conversation?
Jing: มีค่ะ ป๋องพูดว่า... ดีมากจ้ะ ไหน ๆ ก็มาแล้วอย่าให้เสียเที่ยว
dii mâak jâ. nǎi-nǎi-gâaw maa láaeo yàa hâi sǐia thîiao.
Ja: “Very good. In any case, since you came already, don’t let the trip go to waste.” OK, I think we can see how to use ไหน ๆ ก็ไหน ๆ nǎi-nǎi-gâaw-nǎi-nǎi and ไหน ๆ ก็ nǎi-nǎi-gâaw. Let’s try to make a new example. Let’s say you aren’t that hungry, but your friend already ordered food, so you think you might as well eat. Khru Jing, how do we say “we ordered the food already”?
Jing: สั่งอาหารแล้ว
Ja: And how would we say “we might as well eat”?
Jing: กินข้าวเลยก็ได้
Ja: OK listeners, can you guess how to make the whole sentence... “Well anyways, we already ordered the food, so we might as well eat.”?
Jing: ไหน ๆ ก็ไหน ๆ เราสั่งอาหารแล้ว กินข้าวเลยก็ได้

Outro

Ja: How did you do? That's all we've got time for! We hope you've enjoyed learning with us. Please be sure to check the lesson notes for further information.
