POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Ryan: "สวัสดีครับครูพิม(sà-wàt-dii khráp khruu phim)," "it's so hot and muggy these days." I don't think I can take it anymore!
Pim: "ใจเย็นค่ะ(jai yen khâ)," that means "take it easy," Ryan. The rainy season is going to end soon and it's getting cooler!
Ryan: Is that so? Thank God!
Pim: "ใช่ค่ะ(châi khâ)," "that's right." While we're still in the rainy season, why don't you go travel in northern Thailand? It's supposed to be very beautiful—full of green flora and fresh air!
Ryan: Really? What about southern Thailand? I've been planning to go to Phuket, but still haven't had a chance to.
Pim: Now is not a good time to go to Phuket because the monsoon is still bringing rain and storms to the west coast.
Ryan: Well, I think I will go to Chiangmai this weekend then.
Pim: That's a good idea! Come on, Ryan. Let's go to the department store this evening. At least it's cool there!
Ryan: Yeah, let's go. I feel like I'm in an oasis every time I step into the air conditioning at one of the big shopping centers!
Pim: Ha ha ha. Okay. On to the vocabulary.

KEY VOCABULARY AND PHRASES
Ryan: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson. And the first word is?
Pim: "ฤดู(rúe-duu)"
Ryan: "Season."
Pim: Generally, the seasons in each part of Thailand are not much different. There are three seasons, the "hot season," "ฤดูร้อน(rúe-duu ráawn)," from March to May; the "rainy season," "ฤดูฝน(rúe-duu fŏn)," from June to October; and the "cool season," "ฤดูหนาว(rúe-duu năao)," from November to February.
Ryan: Can we hear these phrases again? Listeners, please repeat after "khruu" Pim. "Hot season,"
Pim: "ฤดูร้อน(rúe-duu ráawn)" [pause]
Ryan: "rainy season,"
Pim: "ฤดูฝน(rúe-duu fŏn)" [pause]
Ryan: and "cool season"
Pim: "ฤดูหนาว(rúe-duu năao)" [pause].
Ryan: The next word is?
Pim: "รถแท็กซี่(rót-tháek-sîi)"
Ryan: "Taxi."
Pim: Almost all taxis in Thailand are meter-equipped. So passengers have to pay the fare based on the number shown on the meter. Taxis in Thailand are very noticeable on the roads because of their flashy colors, such as green and yellow, red and blue, or all pink.
Ryan: Okay, listeners. Please repeat the word after "khruu" Pim. "Taxi"
Pim: "รถแท็กซี่(rót-tháek-sîi)" [pause]
Ryan: Next, we have a phrase.
Pim: "เที่ยวให้สนุกนะ(thîiao hâi sà-nùk ná)"
Ryan: "Have fun on your trip" or "have a good day."
Pim: You usually say this phrase to anyone who is going for a trip. The trip here doesn't have to be a long one. You also say the phrase to the one going, for example, out on a date, to an amusement park, and so on.
Ryan: What should I say in return when someone says the phrase "เที่ยวให้สนุกนะ(thîiao hâi sà-nùk ná)" to me?
Pim: You may just say "ขอบคุณ(khàawp-khun)," which is "thank you," in response. Okay, listeners. Please repeat the phrase again after me. "เที่ยวให้สนุกนะ(thîiao hâi sà-nùk ná)"
Ryan: "Have fun on your trip" or "have a good day." Okay, let's move on to the grammar section.

Lesson focus

In this lesson, we'll learn how to use the question word "ที่ไหน(thîi-năi)," meaning "where?" to ask where something is located.
Pim: "ใช่ค่ะ(châi khâ)," "yes." Actually, we have already learned the word "ที่ไหน(thîi-năi)," meaning "where?" to ask someone's hometown in the fourth lesson. In this lesson, we will go into detail about how to use "ที่ไหน(thîi-năi)," meaning "where?" to ask the location. The sentence should begin with anything or anyone that you want to know the location of, followed by the verb "อยู่(yùu)," which means "to be," or more specifically, "to be at a location," and this is followed by the word "ที่ไหน(thîi-năi)." For example, "โรงภาพยนตร์(roong phâap-phá-yon)" is "a cinema." How would you ask "Where is the cinema?"
Ryan: "โรงภาพยนตร์อยู่ที่ไหนครับ(roong phâap-phá-yon yùu thîi-năi khráp)"
Pim: That's right. Next, try to ask "Where is he?"
Ryan: "He" is "เขา(khăo)," so "where is he?" is "เขาอยู่ที่ไหนครับ(khăo yùu thîi-năi khráp)."
Pim: Very good.
Ryan: Okay, listeners. Please repeat after "khruu" Pim. "Where is he?"
Pim: "เขาอยู่ที่ไหน(khăo yùu thîi-năi)" [pause]. Now, let's learn how to answer such a question. When answering the question, we have to repeat the noun and the verb "to be located," and then follow it with the name of the place where the noun is located. Don't forget to put the preposition "ที่(thîi)," which means "at" or "in," in front of the place. For example, how would you say "he is at the office," where "office" is "ที่ทำงาน(thîi-tham-ngaan)" in Thai?
Ryan: "เขาอยู่ที่ที่ทำงาน(khăo yùu thîi thîi-tham-ngaan)." Is that correct?
Pim: Right! What does "โรงแรมอยู่ที่สยามสแควร์(roong-raaem yùu thîi sà-yăam-sà-khwaae)" mean?
Ryan: I know that "โรงแรม(roong-raaem)" is "hotel" and "สยามสแควร์(sà-yăam-sà-khwaae)" is a famous place in Bangkok. Does the sentence mean "The hotel is at Siam Square?"
Pim: Excellent! Not only do we use "ที่ไหน(thîi-năi)" to ask about the location of things, but we can also use it to ask about the destination of a moving object or the location where an action is taking place. For example, "ไป" means "to go." What do you think "คุณจะไปที่ไหน(khun jà bpai thîi-năi)" means?
Ryan: Okay, "คุณ(khun)" is "you." So I think the sentence means "Where will you go?"
Pim: Very good! Try another example. How would you say "Where does John work?" in Thai? I will tell you again that "work" is "ทำงาน(tham-ngaan)."
Ryan: So it should be "จอห์นทำงานที่ไหน(jaawn tham-ngaan thîi-năi)."
Pim: Perfect! How about "Where will you eat tonight?" "To eat" is "ทานข้าว(thaan khâao)," and "tonight" is "คืนนี้(khuuen-níi)."
Ryan: "คืนนี้คุณจะทานข้าวที่ไหน(khuuen-níi khun thaan khâao thîi-năi)."
Pim: That's correct!
Ryan: Now, let's review. Listeners, how would you ask "Where is your home?" [pause] "Khruu" Pim, the answer is?
Pim: "Home" is "บ้าน(bâan)," and "your" is "ของคุณ(khǎawng khun)." So you would say "บ้านของคุณอยู่ที่ไหน(bâan khǎawng khun yùu thîi-năi)."
Ryan: Let's try another one. How would you ask "Where do you study?" [pause] "Khruu" Pim, the answer is?
Pim: "To study" is "เรียน(riian)." So you would say "คุณเรียนที่ไหน(khun riian thîi-năi)."
Ryan: Okay, that's all for today's lesson.
Pim: "มีคำถามอะไรไหมคะ(mii kham-thăam a-rai mái khá)"
Ryan: Do you have any questions?
Pim: If you do, please let us know in the comment section. "แล้วพบกันใหม่ค่ะ(láaeo phóp gan mài khâ)"
Ryan: See you next time.
