KEY VOCABULARY AND PHRASES
Ryan: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson. First we have a long phrase.
Pim: "ไม่ได้เจอกันตั้งนาน(mâi dâai jooe gan dtâng naan)"
Ryan: "Long time, no see."
Pim: This phrase literally means "we haven't met each other in a long time," where "ไม่ได้(mâi dâai)" is "have not," "เจอ(jooe)" is the verb "to meet," "กัน(gan)" means "each other," "ตั้ง(dtâng)" means "up to" or "as much as," and "นาน(naan)" is "long." This phrase is quite long but very useful, so please try to remember it.
Ryan: Can we hear this phrase again? Listeners, please repeat after "khruu" Pim, "Long time, no see."
Pim: "ไม่ได้เจอกันตั้งนาน(mâi dâai jooe gan dtâng naan)" [pause]
Ryan: Again. Next, we have another phrase.
Pim: "ไม่ทราบว่า(mâi sâap wâa...)"
Ryan: "What is ...?"
Pim: "ทราบ(sâap)" is a polite form of the verb "to know" and "ว่า(wâa)" is a conjunction linking the verb "ทราบ(sâap)" with a clause that becomes the object. So literally, this phrase means "I don't know that..." Anyway, it is used as a very polite way to begin any question, especially used with someone you don't know or someone with higher rank in society. For example, if your watch is broken and you want to ask someone sitting next to you on a bus what time it is, you should say "ไม่ทราบว่าตอนนี้กี่โมงแล้วครับ(mâi sâap wâa dtaawn-níi gìi moong láaeo khráp)." Remember how to ask the time we've learned in lesson eleventh lesson?
Ryan: Of course! Are there any casual ways to say this phrase?
Pim: No. In this case, if you want to be casual, just drop the phrase and ask your question. Let's practice. Ryan, try to ask me "Where the Emporium shopping mall?" is in the polite way. I'll give you the vocabulary. "Shopping mall" is "ห้างสรรพสินค้า(hâang-sàp-pha-sĭn-kháa)" or just "ห้าง(hâang)" for short.
Ryan: Okay. "Where" is "ที่ไหน(thîi-năi)," so it would be "ไม่ทราบว่าห้างเอ็มโพเรียมอยู่ที่ไหนครับ(mâi sâap wâa hâang em-phoo-rîiam yùu thîi-năi khráp)."
Pim: That's right!
Ryan: Listeners, please repeat the sentence after "khruu" Pim. "Where is the Emporium shopping mall?"
Pim: "ไม่ทราบว่าห้างเอ็มโพเรียมอยู่ที่ไหน(mâi sâap wâa hâang em-phoo-rîiam yùu thîi-năi" [pause]

Lesson focus

Ryan: Okay, let's move on to the grammar section. In this lesson, we'll learn how to use the conjunction "ว่า(wâa)" to make a complex sentence.
Pim: "ใช่ค่ะ(châi khâ)," "right." The conjunction "ว่า(wâa)" is used to link a verb such as "to say," "to think," or "to know" with what was said, thought, or known. It is placed behind the subject and the verb. It would usually be translated in English as "that." "To speak," "to think," and "to know" are "พูด(phûut)," "คิด(khít)," and "และ ทราบ(sâap)." So how would you say "Mary said that?"
Ryan: "แมรี่พูดว่า(maae-rîi phûut wâa)"
Pim: Good. What about "We think that?"
Ryan: "พวกเราคิดว่า(phûuak-rao khít wâa)"
Pim: That's right! And what about "Mr. Somchai knows that?"
Ryan: "คุณสมชายทราบว่า(khun sŏm-chaai sâap wâa)"
Pim: Okay. Actually, if you don't want to be that polite, you can also use "รู้(rúu)" instead of "ทราบ(sâap)." So "Mr. Somchai knows that" can also be "คุณสมชายรู้ว่า(khun sŏm-chaai rúu wâa)."
Ryan: I got it. Then, if I want to add a clause to the sentence, can I just add it after "ว่า(wâa)?"
Pim: Yes, of course! Just like in English. The clause now acts as the object of the verb. Okay, let's try to make a clause first and then we'll use it to create a complex sentence. Do you remember what "don't like" in Thai is? It is "ไม่ชอบ(mâi châawp)." "สุนัข(sù-nák)" is the polite word for "dog." So "she doesn't like dogs" is?
Ryan: "เขาไม่ชอบสุนัข(khăo mâi châawp sù-nák)"
Pim: Yes. Then how would you say "Mary said that she doesn't like dogs?"
Ryan: Okay. I just need to put the clause after "แมรี่พูดว่า(maae-rîi phûut wâa)." So it becomes "แมรี่พูดว่าเขาไม่ชอบสุนัข(maae-rîi phûut wâa khăo mâi châawp sù-nák)."
Pim: Very good! It's easy, right? Let's have some more examples. Okay "Thai food" is "อาหารไทย(aa-hăan thai)," and "spicy" is "เผ็ด(phèt)." So "we think that Thai food is spicy" should be?
Ryan: "พวกเราคิดว่าอาหารไทยเผ็ด(phûuak-rao khít wâa aa-hăan thai phèt)"
Pim: Great! Okay "a doctor" is "หมอ(mǎaw)" in Thai. How would you say "Mr. Somchai knows that I am a doctor?"
Ryan: "คุณสมชายทราบว่าผมเป็นหมอ(khun sŏm-chaai sâap wâa phŏm bpen mǎaw)"
Pim: Right! And you can also say "คุณสมชายรู้ว่าผมเป็นหมอ(khun sŏm-chaai rúu wâa phŏm bpen mǎaw)" to be more casual.
Ryan: Okay, listeners, please repeat these sentences after "khruu" Pim. "Mary said that she doesn't like dogs."
Pim: "แมรี่พูดว่าเขาไม่ชอบสุนัข(maae-rîi phûut wâa khăo mâi châawp sù-nák)" [pause]
Ryan: "We think that Thai food is spicy."
Pim: "พวกเราคิดว่าอาหารไทยเผ็ด(phûuak-rao khít wâa aa-hăan thai phèt)" [pause]
Ryan: "Mr. Somchai knows that I am a doctor."
Pim: "คุณสมชายทราบว่าผมเป็นหมอ(khun sŏm-chaai sâap wâa phŏm bpen mǎaw)" [pause] or "คุณสมชายรู้ว่าผมเป็นหมอ(khun sŏm-chaai rúu wâa phŏm bpen mǎaw)" [pause] Okay. "ว่า(wâa)" can also be paired with the verb "เรียก(rîiak)," "to call" resulting in "เรียกว่า(rîiak wâa)," which means "to be called." For example, imagine that you are pointing at a bag, then you can say "นี่เรียกว่ากระเป๋า(nîi rîiak wâa grà-bpăo)," which is "this is called a bag," where "กระเป๋า(grà-bpăo)" means "a bag."
Ryan: Hey, I'm getting a feeling that "เรียกว่า(rîiak wâa)" is going to be a very important phrase for people learning Thai when they want to learn new vocabulary words.
Pim: Exactly! When you want to ask what something is called, you use the question word "อะไร(a-rai)," "what."
Ryan: I remember that. So "what is this called?" should be "นี่เรียกว่าอะไร(nîi rîiak wâa a-rai)," right?
Pim: Very good! And if you want to specify the language, for example, "What is this called in Thai?" you can say "นี่ในภาษาไทยเรียกว่าอะไร(nîi nai phaa-săa thai rîiak wâa a-rai)."
Ryan: Now, let's review. Listeners, how would you say "I think that today is very hot?" Let's give you a hint that "today" is "วันนี้(wan-níi)," and "very hot" is "ร้อนมาก(ráawn mâak)." [pause] "Khruu" Pim, the answer is?
Pim: "ผมคิดว่าวันนี้ร้อนมาก(phŏm khít wâa wan-níi ráawn mâak)" or "ดิฉันคิดว่าวันนี้ร้อนมาก(dì-chăn khít wâa wan-níi ráawn mâak)"
Ryan: Okay, next, how would you ask a Thai person "What is the airport called in Thai?" [pause] "Khruu" Pim, the answer is?
Pim: "Airport" "ในภาษาไทยเรียกว่าอะไร(nai phaa-săa thai rîiak wâa a-rai)"
Ryan: Okay, that's all for today's lesson.
Pim: "มีคำถามอะไรไหมคะ(mii kham-thăam a-rai mái khá)"
Ryan: "Do you have any questions?"
Pim: If you do, please let us know in the comment section. "แล้วพบกันใหม่ค่ะ(láaeo phóp gan mài khâ)"
Ryan: See you next time!
