Ryan : But if you will go to Railey Beach, you need to take a boat to get to there.
แดน: โอ้...น่าสนใจ ขอบคุณมากครับ (ôo...nâa-sǒn-jai. khàawp-khun mâak khráp.)
Ryan : Oh...that's interesting. Thank you very much.
Ryan: So Khru Pim, have you ever been to Krabi?
Pim: My husband and I went there for our honeymoon. It was wonderful.
Ryan: Krabi is definitely a great spot for a romantic beach vacation. I think Railay Beach especially is good because it is surrounded by such amazing views.
Pim: That’s true. It’s also kind of interesting that the same limestone cliffs that give Railay Beach its beauty also make it more difficult to get to.
Ryan: But it’s definitely worth it for the atmosphere. Even though it’s part of the mainland, I think Railay feels like an island because you have to take a boat to get there.
Pim: Did you try rock climbing when you went there?
Ryan: Well, I know it’s a really famous spot for rock climbing. But when I’m on vacation I’d rather just relax and enjoy the view of the cliffs from down on the beach.
Pim: But if you don’t climb up the rocks, you’ll never know how good the view is from the top.
Ryan: Yeah, I guess I’ll just have to take your word for it. OK, now on to the vocabulary.

Ryan : to travel by boat
Pim: นั่งเรือ (nâng ruuea) [slowly - broken down by syllable]
Pim: นั่งเรือ (nâng ruuea) [natural native speed]
Ryan : Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson.
Pim: The first phrase we’ll look at is....
Pim: ใช่แล้ว (châi láaeo)
Ryan: This means “That’s correct”. ใช่ (châi) means “right” or “correct”, and แล้ว (láaeo) means “already”.
Pim: Even though the words mean “correct already”, ใช่แล้ว (châi láaeo) is closer in meaning to “That’s absolutely right”. We use it to agree with or confirm what someone else just said.
Ryan: Alright, and the next phrase is...
Pim: คนเดียว (khon diiao)
Ryan: This can mean “alone”, or “by oneself”. คนเดียว (khon diiao) will usually follow after the verb or the verb’s object in a sentence.
Pim: ใช่แล้วค่ะ (châi láaeo khâ), That’s right. So for example, I could say ดิฉันไม่ชอบกินข้าวคนเดียว (dì-chăn mâi châawp gin khâao khon diiao)
Ryan: “I don’t like to eat meals alone.” So, in this case we had the verb phrase “to eat a meal”
Pim: กินข้าว (gin khâao)
Ryan: And that was followed by “alone”
Pim: คนเดียว (khon diiao)
Ryan: So the whole sentence once again was...
Pim: ดิฉันไม่ชอบกินข้าวคนเดียว (dì-chăn mâi châawp gin khâao khon diiao)
Ryan: “I don’t like to eat meals alone.” And the last phrase we have is...
Pim: มาก่อน (maa gàawn)
Ryan: This is used as a preposition meaning “before” or “previously”. The two words that make up this phrase mean “to come before”.
Pim: มาก่อน maa gàawn is used to place an action some time before the present moment in chronological order. And we often use มาก่อน (maa gàawn) when saying that something has or has not ever happened.
Ryan: Alright, how about an example.
Pim: Sure. If you’ve never eaten Pad Thai in your entire life, you could say ดิฉันไม่เคยกินผัดไทยมาก่อน (dì-chăn mâi khooei gin phàt-thai maa gàawn)
Ryan: “I’ve never eaten Pad Thai before.”
Pim: So Khun Ryan, do you think you can say the same thing, but change it for a male speaker?
Ryan: Well, all I’d have to change is the pronoun “I”, so I’d say ผมไม่เคยกินผัดไทยมาก่อน (phŏm mâi khooei gin phàt-thai maa gàawn)
OK, and now let’s move on to the grammar section.
Ryan: The focus of this lesson’s grammar is น่า (nâa) + verb to make “worthy of” adjectives.
Pim: น่า nâa is a prefix meaning “worthy of” that combines with verbs to make adjectives. For example, ดู (duu) is the verb “to watch”, so น่าดู (nâa-duu) becomes an adjective meaning “worth watching”.
Ryan: That seems pretty straightforward. Can you think of another example?
Pim: Sure. กลัว (gluua) is the verb “to fear”. So, น่ากลัว (nâa-gluua) becomes an adjective meaning “frightening” or “scary”.
Ryan: OK, I see. So if something is worthy of fear that makes it “scary”.
Pim: Exactly. Another example of a น่า (nâa) adjective is น่ารัก (nâa-rák). รัก (rák) is the verb “to love”, so น่ารัก (nâa-rák) means “cute” or “lovable”.
Ryan: So how would we go about using these nâa adjectives in a sentence?
Pim: You can use them just like any other adjective by putting them right behind the noun that they describe.
Ryan: Alright. Well, earlier you said that น่าดู meant “worth watching”, so can you pair that up with any noun?
Pim: Certainly. หนัง (năng) means a “movie” or “film”. So หนังน่าดู (năng nâa-duu) means “movie worth watching”. Then I can make a whole sentence as ปีนี้มีหนังน่าดูหลายเรื่อง (bpii níi mii năng nâa-duu lăai rûueang)
Ryan: “This year had many movies worth watching.” Here we have to use the classifier for movies when saying “many movies”.
Pim: เรื่อง (rûueang) is the word that means “a story”. And it’s the classifier for movies. So หลายเรื่อง (lăai rûueang) means “many stories”.
Ryan: So the whole sentence once again was...
Pim: ปีนี้มีหนังน่าดูหลายเรื่อง (bpii níi mii năng nâa-duu lăai rûueang)
Ryan: “This year had many interesting movies”. How about a sentence using “cute”?
Pim: A very simple sentence would be คุณน่ารักจัง (khun nâa-rák jang)
Ryan: “You’re so cute!” Now, in this case we just had the subject คุณ (khun) for “you”, the adjective น่ารัก (nâa-rák) for “cute”, and the adverb จัง (jang) which means “quite” or “so”. I didn’t notice any verb in this sentence.
Pim: That’s true. Unlike English, we don’t use the verb “to be” when an adjective is used to point out the condition of the subject. It’s a bit like saying “You so cute”.
Ryan: What are some other nâa adjectives that you hear a lot in regular conversations?
Pim: น่าสนใจ (nâa-sŏn-jai) means “interesting”, น่าเกลียด (nâa-glìiat) means “ugly”, and น่าสงสาร (nâa-sŏng-săan) means “pitiful”.
Ryan: Let’s hear those again one by one. First was “interesting”
Pim: น่าสนใจ (nâa-sŏn-jai)
Ryan: Next was “ugly”
Pim: น่าเกลียด (nâa-glìiat)
Ryan: And finally we had “pitiful”.
Pim: น่าสงสาร (nâa-sŏng-săan)
Ryan: We also have some more nâa adjectives in the lesson notes, so be sure to check them out.
Ryan: Ok, That’s all for this lesson.
Pim: มีคำถามอะไรไหมคะ (mii kham-thăam a-rai mái khá)
Ryan: Do you have any questions?
Pim: If you do, please let us know in the comment section. แล้วพบกันใหม่ค่ะ (láaeo phóp gan mài khâ)
Ryan: See you next time.
