เล็ก: คุณแดนมาเที่ยวภูเก็ตเดือนตุลาคมสิครับ เพราะมีเทศกาลกินเจ (khun daaen maa thîiao phuu-gèt duuean dtù-laa-khom sì khráp. phráw mii thêet-sà-gaan gin jee.)
Ryan: Come visit Phuket in October. There's a Vegetarian Festival.
น้อย: ดิฉันกินอาหารเจเป็นเวลาเก้าวันทุกปีค่ะ (dì-chǎn gin aa-hǎan-jee bpen wee-laa gâao wan thúk bpii khâ.)
Ryan: I eat vegetarian food for nine days every year.
แดน: จริงเหรอครับ (jing rǒoe khráp.)
Ryan: Oh, really?
น้อย: จริง ๆ ค่ะ (jing-jing khâ.)
Ryan: Really.
แดน: กินอาหารเจ แล้วรู้สึกยังไงครับ (gin aa-hǎan-jee láaeo rúu-sùek yang-ngai khráp.)
Ryan: How do you feel after eating vegetarian food?
น้อย: รู้สึกว่าสุขภาพดีขึ้น และผอมลงด้วยค่ะ (rúu-sùek wâa sùk-khà-phâap dii khûen láe phǎawm long dûuai khâ.)
Ryan: I feel healthier and slimmer too.
แดน: เหรอครับ ถ้าอย่างนั้นผมจะลองกินเจดูบ้าง มาเที่ยวเมืองไทยสองอาทิตย์ อ้วนขึ้นเยอะเลย (rǒoe khráp. thâa yàang nán phǒm jà laawng gin jee duu bâang. maa thîiao muueang-thai sǎawng aa-thít ûuan khûen yóe looei.)
Ryan: Oh? Well in that case, I'm going to try eating vegetarian food too. I've gotten much fatter in these two weeks since I came to Thailand.
น้อย: (หัวเราะ) ขอโทษจริง ๆ ที่อาหารไทยอร่อยมากไปนะคะ ((laughing) khǎaw-thôot jing-jing thîi aa-hǎan-thai à-ràuy mâak bpai ná khá.)
Ryan: (laughing) I'm really very sorry that Thai food is just too delicious.
Pim: Hey Khun Ryan, you’re a vegetarian, right?
Ryan: That’s right.
Pim: Have you ever been to Phuket’s Vegetarian Festival?
Ryan: No, I still haven’t made it down there during the festival, but it’s something I really want to do. I’ll have to make sure to check it out this year.
Pim: And did you know that the festival is only เจ (jee) food. Do you only eat เจ (jee) food or do you eat มังสวิรัติ (mang-sà-wí-rát)?
Ryan: Umm...what’s the difference?
Pim: มังสวิรัติ (mang-sà-wí-rát) just means any food that doesn’t contain meat. But เจ (jee) food is cooked according to the beliefs of Chinese Mahayana Buddhism. เจ (jee) food contains no meat or dairy, and it also doesn’t contain certain types of vegetables that have a strong odor such as onions and garlic.
Ryan: Well, in that case, I usually eat มังสวิรัติ (mang-sà-wí-rát). I wouldn’t know how to cook if I couldn’t use onions and garlic.
Pim: But luckily for you, other people know how to do it. เจ (jee) food in Thailand is both delicious and healthy. And you don’t have to wait for the festival to enjoy it. There are a lot of small restaurants that specialize in vegetarian food. just look for a yellow and red sign with the word เจ (jee) in Thai writing.
Ryan: OK, I’ll keep an eye open for it. Now let’s move on to look at the vocabulary.
Ryan: The first word we shall see is:
Pim: เดือนตุลาคม (duuean dtù-laa-khom) [natural native speed]

: Next:
Pim: อ้วน (ûuan) [natural native speed]
Ryan: fat, chubby
Pim: อ้วน (ûuan) [slowly - broken down by syllable]
Pim: อ้วน (ûuan) [natural native speed]
: Next:
Pim: ฝาก (fàak) [natural native speed]
Ryan: to deposit, to leave
Pim: ฝาก (fàak) [slowly - broken down by syllable]
Pim: ฝาก (fàak) [natural native speed]
Ryan: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first phrase we’ll look at is....
Pim: คราวหลัง (khraao-lǎng)
Ryan: This means “from now on”. คราว (khraao) means a “time” or an “occasion”. And หลัง (lǎng) can mean “behind”, but in this expression it means “after”. So another way to translate คราวหลัง (khraao-lǎng) is “afterwards”.
Pim: Ok, Khun Ryan, มาสาย (maa-sǎai) means “to come late” and ไม่ (mâi) means “not”. So, how would you say “From now on I won’t be late”?
Ryan: Well, I could say คราวหลังผมจะไม่มาสาย (khraao-lǎng phŏm jà mâi maa săai)
Pim: That’s right
Ryan: What’s the next phrase?
Pim: ไม่ต้องลำบาก (mâi dtâwng lam-bàak)
Ryan: This means “You don’t need to bother” or “You don’t need to go through the trouble”.
Pim: ไม่ต้อง (mâi dtâwng means) “don’t need to”. And ลำบาก (lam-bàak) is an adjective meaning “difficult”, “hard”, or “troubled”.
Ryan: Now in a sentence, ไม่ต้องลำบาก (mâi dtâwng lam-bàak) can be followed by an action to specify what the listener doesn’t need to bother with. What was the example from the conversation?
Pim: Lek told Dan ไม่ต้องลำบากซื้อ (mâi dtâwng lam-bàak súue)
Ryan: “You don’t need to bother buying.” Meaning that Dan didn’t need to go through the trouble of buying the fruit that he brought over as a welcome gift. OK, then the last phrase we have is...
Pim: มาเที่ยว (maa thîiao)
Ryan: This means “to come on a trip”. มา (maa) is the verb “to come”. Previously we learned that ไปเที่ยว (bpai thîiao) means “go on a trip” or “go on an outing”.
Pim: Right. มาเที่ยว (maa thîiao) works exactly the same, only it’s expressed from a different point of reference. If you’re already at the place you have travelled to, you would use มาเที่ยว (maa thîiao).
Ryan: And in the same way, you would use มาเที่ยว (maa thîiao) when talking about someone who is coming to visit you.
Pim: For example, กี่ครั้ง (gìi khráng) means “how many times”, therefore I could ask คุณมาเที่ยวที่นี่กี่ครั้งแล้วคะ (khun maa thîiao thîi nîi gìi khráng láaeo khá)
Ryan: “How many times have you come to visit here?” Can we break this sentence into two halves? First was...
Pim: คุณมาเที่ยวที่นี่ (khun maa thîiao thîi nîi)
Ryan: “You come traveling here”
Pim: กี่ครั้งแล้วคะ (gìi khráng láaeo khá)
Ryan: “how many times already?” Alright, and now let’s move on to the grammar section.
Ryan: The focus of this lesson’s grammar is adjectives + ขึ้น (khûen) or ลง (long) used to show “increasing” and “decreasing”.
Pim: ขึ้น (khûen) is a verb that means “to ascend”, and ลง (long) is a verb that means “to descend”. These two verbs are used with adjectives to show that the quality the adjective describes is either on the increase or the decrease.
Ryan: Generally, ขึ้น (khûen) is used in cases where something is “rising”, “increasing”, or “growing”. And ลง (long) is used in cases where something is “dropping”, “decreasing”, or “shrinking”. I think some examples would really help out here.
Pim: Yes. An easy example is the price of some product. The word แพง (phaaeng) is an adjective meaning “expensive”. So to say that the price is increasing, or getting more expensive, we use แพงขึ้น (phaaeng khûen).
Ryan: So แพงขึ้น (phaaeng khûen) is like saying “expensive rising”. I guess that makes sense.
Pim: But, on the other hand, the word for “cheap” is ถูก thùuk. So the way to say “become cheaper” is ถูกลง (thùuk long).
Ryan: Be careful here. Even though you might think the “cheapness” is increasing, we use ลง (long) because it’s the price that is “decreasing”. How about an example that uses both terms?
Pim: Alright. น้ำมันพืช (nám-man phûuet) is “vegetable oil”, and น้ำมันรถ (náam-man rót) is “gasoline”. So maybe I could say that ราคาน้ำมันพืชแพงขึ้นแต่ราคาน้ำมันรถถูกลง (raa-khaa náam-man phûuet phaaeng khûen dtàae raa-khaa náam-man rót thùuk long)
Ryan: “The price of vegetable oil has increased, but the price of gasoline has decreased.” And let’s break this sentence up into two halves to take a better look at it. The first part was...
Pim: ราคาน้ำมันพืชแพงขึ้น (raa-khaa náam-man phûuet phaaeng khûen)
Rayn: “The price of vegetable oil has increased” or “has gotten more expensive”. Next was...
Pim: แต่ราคาน้ำมันรถถูกลง (dtàae raa-khaa náam-man rót thùuk long)
Ryan: “but the price of gasoline has gone down” or “has gotten cheaper”.
Pim: Another example we can use is with a person’s figure. อ้วน (ûuan) is an adjective that means “fat” or “chubby”, and ผอม (phǎawm) means “thin” or “slender”.
Ryan: OK, let me guess. If someone has gotten fatter, or gained weight, we use อ้วนขึ้น (ûuan khûen).
Pim: That’s right. But, if someone has become more slender, or lost weight, we use ผอมลง (phǎawm long).
Ryan: This one is easy to remember if you think about the English phrase “slim down”. Now I have a question. Do ขึ้น (khûen) and ลง (long) work with abstract ideas like “good” and “bad”?
Pim: Of course. That’s how we say “getting better” and “getting worse” in Thai. ดีขึ้น (dii khûen) means “to get better”. And แย่ลง (yâae long) means “to get worse”. The example from the conversation was...
รู้สึกว่าสุขภาพดีขึ้น (rúu-sùek wâa sùk-khà-phâap dii khûen)
Ryan: “I feel healthier.” or “I feel that my health has gotten better.” If we break up this sentence the first part was...
Pim: รู้สึกว่า (rúu-sùek wâa)
Ryan: “I feel that”
Pim: สุขภาพดีขึ้น (sùk-khà-phâap dii khûen)
Ryan: “health getting better”. Now how about an example using แย่ลง (yâae long) for “get worse”.
Pim: Alright. งาน (ngaan) means “work”, and มีคุณภาพ (mii khun-ná-phâap) means “quality”. So then I can say...
ฉันคิดว่างานของเขามีคุณภาพแย่ลง (chăn khít wâa ngaan khǎawng khăo mii khun-ná-phâap yâae long)
Ryan: “I think the quality of his work has gotten worse.” And this sentence might be easiest to understand if we break it up into three parts. First was...
Pim: ฉันคิดว่า (chăn khít wâa)
Ryan: “I think that” next was...
Pim: งานของเขา (ngaan khǎawng khăo)
Ryan: “his work” and finally
Pim: มีคุณภาพแย่ลง (mii khun-ná-phâap yâae long)
Ryan: “quality getting worse.” So the whole sentence one more time...
Pim: ฉันคิดว่างานของเขามีคุณภาพแย่ลง (chăn khít wâa ngaan khǎawng khăo mii khun-ná-phâap yâae long)
Ryan: “I think the quality of his work has gotten worse.”
Ryan: Ok, That’s all for this lesson.
Pim: มีคำถามอะไรไหมคะ (mii kham-thăam a-rai mái khá)
Ryan: Do you have any questions?
Pim: If you do, please let us know in the comment section. แล้วพบกันใหม่ค่ะ (láaeo phóp gan mài khâ)
Ryan: See you next time.
