Ryan: Sure. See you then!
Pim: So Khun Ryan, do you remember that I told you that I haven’t been to Wat Pho before?
Ryan: Yes, I remember. I told you that you’ve got to go there to see the Reclining Buddha.
Pim: Well, of course I’d like to see it. But actually there’s a bigger reason that I want to visit Wat Pho.
Ryan: What’s that?
Pim: I want to learn Thai massage at the Wat Pho Massage School.
Ryan: Oh yeah? Can anyone learn Thai massage there?
Pim: Sure. They have many different courses that are offered. You can finish a basic course in five or six days. They also teach longer, more advanced courses for people who want a professional quality massage training.
Ryan: Isn’t the Wat Pho massage training one of the most highly respected in Thailand?
Pim: I think it’s without a doubt the most highly respected. Wat Pho has a long history of being a place for the study of Thai massage. It was a center for traditional medical knowledge even before Bangkok became the new capital.
Ryan: That’s pretty interesting. OK, now let’s have a look at the vocabulary.

Pim: สถานีรถไฟฟ้า (sà-thǎa-nii rót-fai-fáa) [natural native speed]
Ryan: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson.
Pim: The first phrase we’ll look at is....
Pim: เวลาว่าง (wee-laa wâang)
Ryan: This means “during free time”. เวลา (wee-laa) means “time”, and ว่าง (wâang) means “free” or “unoccupied”.
Pim: เวลาว่าง (wee-laa wâang) is often used as a preposition at the beginning of a sentence, as in...
เวลาว่างฉันชอบไปชายหาด (wee-laa wâang chăn châawp bpai chaai-hàat)
Ryan: “When I have free time, I like to go to the beach.” The next phrase is...
Pim: ลอง...ดู (laawng...duu)
Ryan: This pattern is used to say that the subject is trying something out.
Pim: That’s right. The pattern is ลอง (laawng), then some action, then ดู (duu). For example, ใส่ (sài) means “to put on” and หมวก (mùuak) means “hat”. So...ลองใส่หมวกดู (laawng sài mùuak duu)means...
Ryan: “try on the hat”. And this pattern works with any action?
Pim: Sure. Anything that you can try out or attempt to do can go in the middle of (ลอง...ดู.)
Ryan: Alright, then what is the next phrase...
Pim: ที่ไหนดี (thîi-nǎi dii)
Ryan: This means “where would be good”. ดี (dii) can get attached to the end of many questions to ask someone for their opinion or suggestion.
Pim: That’s right. So a whole question might be...ไปที่ไหนดี (bpai thîi-nǎi dii.)
Ryan: “Where should we go?” How about an example using a different question word.
Pim: Ok...กินอะไรดี (gin à-rai dii.)
Ryan: “What should we eat?” And let’s have one more.
Pim: Sure...เราเจอกันเมื่อไหร่ดี (rao jooe gan mûuea-rài dii.)
Ryan: “When should we meet?” So that brings us to our last phrase, which is...
Pim: แล้วเจอกัน (láaeo jooe gan)
Ryan: This means “See you later.”
Pim: เจอ (jooe) is the verb “to meet”, and กัน (gan) means “together” or “one another”. The แล้ว (láaeo) at the beginning of this phrase means “next” or “after” as in “See you next time.” or “See you after a while”.
Ryan: Alright, now let’s move on to the grammar section.
Ryan: The focus of this lesson’s grammar is using ด้วย (dûuai) to mean “also” or “with”.
Pim: The word ด้วย (dûuai) has two main meanings. First, it is an adverb that means “also”, “too”, or “together”. When used in this way, ด้วย (dûuai) will come at the end of the sentence, after the verb and any objects that it might have.
Ryan: How about for an example I just told you that I’m going to see a movie, and you want to say that you’d also like to go.
Pim: OK, Well “to go see a movie” is ไปดูหนัง (bpai duu năng), and “to want to go” is อยากไป (yàak bpai). So my full reaction might be... คุณจะไปดูหนังเหรอคะ ดิฉันอยากไปด้วย (khun jà bpai duu năng rǒoe khá dì-chăn yàak bpai dûuai)
Ryan: “Oh, you’re going to see a movie? I want to go too.” Let’s break this up into two halves and hear it once again. First, “Oh, you’re going to see a movie?”
Pim: คุณจะไปดูหนังเหรอคะ (khun jà bpai duu năng rǒoe khá)
Ryan: Next “I want to go too.”
Pim: ดิฉันอยากไปด้วย (dì-chăn yàak bpai dûuai)
Ryan: So basically ด้วย (dûuai) at the end of any clause will be just like saying “also”, “too”, or “as well”. So Khru Pim, what’s the second main meaning of ด้วย (dûuai) that we wanted to discuss?
Pim: The second meaning of ด้วย (dûuai) is the preposition “by” or “with”. In this usage, ด้วย (dûuai) comes after a verb or a verb and its direct object and before an indirect object.
Ryan: How about we use the phrase “buy with a credit card” as an example.
Pim: That’s a good idea. ซื้อ (súue) is “to buy” and บัตรเครดิต (bàt-khree-dìt) is “credit card”. So ซื้อด้วยบัตรเครดิต (súue dûuai bàt-khree-dìt) means “buy with a credit card”.
Ryan: Now in that example there was no direct object, so let’s add one in. Let’s say we bought a new camera.
Pim: OK. กล้อง (glâwng) means “camera”, and “ใหม่” (mài) is the adjective “new”. So now the whole phrase would be ซื้อกล้องใหม่ด้วยบัตรเครดิต (súue glâwng mài dûuai bàt-khree-dìt).
Ryan: “bought a new camera with a credit card.” Can we hear that once again? But this time also add a subject to the sentence. How about our main character from the conversation, Dan.
Pim: คุณแดนซื้อกล้องใหม่ด้วยบัตรเครดิต (khun daaen súue glâwng mài dûuai bàt-khree-dìt.)
Ryan: “Dan bought a new camera with a credit card.”
Ryan: Ok, That’s all for this lesson.
Pim: มีคำถามอะไรไหมคะ (mii kham-thăam a-rai mái khá)
Ryan: Do you have any questions?
Pim: If you do, please let us know in the comment section. แล้วพบกันใหม่ค่ะ (láaeo phóp gan mài khâ)
Ryan: See you next time.
