POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Ryan: So, khru Pim, in the conversation, Apple said her favorite singer is “Phii Bird”. Who is that?
Pim: He’s the biggest pop star in Thailand. His real name is Thongchai McIntyre, but he uses the nickname “Bird”. And since he’s been around for a while, and he’s older than many of his fans, most people call him “phii”.
Ryan: I see. What do you think of him?
Pim: I like him. He’s a good singer, and his concerts are a lot of fun. What Thai music do you like khun Ryan?
Ryan: Do you know the band Carabao?
Pim: Of course I know Carabao. They’ve been around since I was a baby. They’re probably the most popular band in Thailand.
Ryan: I like that most of their songs have a serious message.
Pim: That kind of music is called “phleeng phûuea chii-wít” or “songs for life” in English. I think it’s very popular with working class people.
Ryan: What else is really popular with regular Thais?
Pim: There’s a type of music called “luk thung” that’’s real popular with everyday Thai folk. It’s a bit like a Thai version of country music. But it developed from local influences. The singers use a lot of vibrato to express themselves vocally. It’s a unique sound to Thailand.
Ryan: Hmm that sounds interesting. I’ll have to give it a listen sometime. OK now on to the vocabulary.

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Ryan: Let's have a closer look at the usuage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson.
Pim: เป็นยังไง (bpen yang-ngai)
Ryan: This is just a shortened version of the phrase เป็นอย่างไร (bpen yàang-rai). It means “how is it?” It could also mean “How are you?” or “What’s up?” depending on the context.
Pim: You will hear the phrase pronounced this way as เป็นยังไง (bpen yang-ngai) far more often in everyday conversation that the formal written form เป็นอย่างไร (bpen yàang-rai).
Ryan: Ok, and the next phrase is.
Pim: มาเที่ยว (maa thîiao)
Ryan: มา (maa) means “to come”, and เที่ยว (thîiao) means a “trip” or “outing”. So together it means “to come on a trip.”
Pim: For example, if someone came to visit you from a different city, you could say,
เขามาเที่ยว (khǎo maa thîiao)
Ryan: “He came on a trip.” เที่ยว (thîiao) can mean a trip away from home, but it can also refer to a short outing for fun, such as going to see a movie, going shopping, or going out for drinks at night.
Pim: That’s right. And if you are going instead of coming, then you would have to say ไปเที่ยว (bpai thîiao) instead. For example, if you are at home you can call your friend on the phone and ask, ไปเที่ยวกันไหม (bpai thîiao gan mǎi)
Ryan: “Do you want to go out for fun together?” That’s a useful phrase that people might want to remember. Can we here it again khru Pim?
Pim: ไปเที่ยวกันไหม (bpai thîiao gan mǎi)
Ryan: “Do you want to go out for fun together?” Ok, great, now let’s move on to the grammar.

Lesson focus

Ryan: The focus of today’s grammar is comparatives and superlatives.
Pim: We can compare two objects by adding the word กว่า (gwàa) after an adjective.
Ryan: It is just like adding “-er” to the end of an adjective in English, or saying “more (something) than”. The pattern is, the first noun + an Adjective + กว่า (gwàa) + the second noun. For example,
Pim: ดิฉันสูงกว่าเขา ผมสูงกว่าเขา (dì-chǎn sǔung gwàa khǎo)
Ryan: “I’m taller than him.” Let’s break it down by word.
Pim: ดิฉัน (dì-chǎn)
Ryan: “I”
Pim: สูง (sǔung)
Ryan: “tall”
Pim: กว่า (gwàa)
Ryan: “more than”
Pim: เขา (khǎo)
Ryan: “him” So the word order is basically the same as English. That seems pretty easy. How about another example. What’s the word for “elephant”?
Pim: ช้าง (cháang)
Ryan: And what’s the word for “rhinoceros”?
Pim: แรด (râaet)
Ryan: So how can we say “Elephants are bigger than rhinos.”?
Pim: ช้างใหญ่กว่าแรด (cháang yài gwàa râaet)
Ryan: Great.
Pim: And you know, we can also put gwàa at the end of the sentence if you already know what the second noun is going to be without saying it. For example, I could say แรดเป็นสัตว์ที่ใหญ่ แต่ช้างใหญ่กว่า
Ryan: “Rhinos are big animals, but elephants are bigger.”
Pim: That’s right.
Ryan: OK, now how can we say elephants are the “biggest” animal?
Pim: In that case, we have to put ที่สุด (thîi-sùt) after the adjective. So, here the word for “big” is yài. Therefore, to say “the biggest” you would use (yài thîi-sùt).
Ryan: So the same pattern works with any adjective, right?
Pim: Right. For example, สูงที่สุด (sǔung thîi-sùt )
Ryan: “the tallest”
Pim: Can you guess how to say “He is the tallest person in the school.”
Ryan: Well, “in the school” would be (nai roong-riian). And “the tallest person” would be khon (thîi sǔung thîi-sùt). So the whole sentence must be เขาเป็นคนที่สูงที่สุดในโรงเรียน (khǎo bpen khon thîi sǔung thîi-sùt nai roong-riian).
Pim: Very good!
Ryan: Let’s try one more example. How do you say “river”?
Pim: แม่น้ำ (mâae-náam)
Ryan: Then how do you say “the longest river”?
Pim: (mâae-náam thîi yaao thîi-sùt)
Ryan: And how do you say “in the world”?
Pim: (nai lôok)
Ryan: Alright then, แม่นำ้ที่ยาวที่สุดในโลกคือะไรครับ “What is the longest river in the world?”
Pim: That’s easy. แม่น้ำไนล์เป็นแม่น้ำที่ยาวที่สุดในโลก (mâae-náam nai bpen mâae-náam thîi yaao thîi-sùt nai lôok)
Ryan: “The Nile River is the longest river in the world.” Correct!
