POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Ryan Coffee shops are hugely popular in Thailand these days, aren’t they?
Pim Chai laaeo kha. That’s right. In the last ten years especially, the number of coffee shops has exploded. You can find them everywhere. And it isn’t just international chains. There are some local Thai chains of coffee shops that are super popular.
Ryan Can you recommend a Thai coffee shop for our listeners to visit?
Pim There’s two that I could recommend. Wawee Coffee and Café Doi Tung. They use beans grown in the mountains of Thailand.
Ryan Really? I didn’t realize there was much coffee grown in Thailand.
Pim There is. And a lot of it is grown by the hill-tribe people in the north. It was promoted as a crop to get them to stop growing opium poppies.
Ryan That’s good to hear. Is there any particular coffee drink you’d recommend?
Pim Well, since it’s always hot in Thailand I like to drink “gaa-faae yen”, iced-coffee.
Ryan Sounds like a good choice. Ok let’s move on to the vocabulary.

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Ryan Let's have a closer look at the usuage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson.
Pim อ่านหนังสือ àan nǎng-sǔue
Ryan This phrase literally means “read a book”. อ่าน àan is the verb “to read”, and หนังสือ nǎng-sǔue means “book”. However, in everyday speaking, this phrase is used to mean “to study.”
Pim Right, but only when you are studying on your own, like in the library. When you study in a class with a teacher, then we say เรียน riiaan.
Ryan And the next phrase is...
Pim เอาอะไรดี ao à-rai dii
Ryan This phrase means “What will you have?”
Pim เอา ao is the verb “to take”, อะไร à-rai is the question “what?” , and ดี dii means “good”.
Ryan So the literal meaning is “What is good for you to take?” We can also use ดี dii at the end of other questions when we want to ask someone for their opinion or preference.
Pim That’s right. For example, you might ask คืนนี้เราไปเที่ยวที่ไหนดี khuuen níi rao bpai thîiao thîi-nǎi dii
Ryan “Where should we go out tonight?” Remember ไปเที่ยว can mean “to go on a trip” or it can mean “to go on an outing”. Let’s hear both those sentences again. “Where should we go out tonight?”
Pim คืนนี้เราไปเที่ยวที่ไหนดี
Ryan “What will you have?”
Pim เอาอะไรดี
Ryan And the last one is...
Pim เนี่ยะ nîa
Ryan This is a kind of slang or colloquial word that has evolved from the pronoun นี่ nîi for “this”. It is used a lot for emphasis.
Pim One phrase you might hear is อะไรกันเนี่ยะ
Ryan “What the heck is this!?” OK, let’s have a look at the grammar.

Lesson focus

Ryan The focus of today’s grammar is expressing feelings.
Pim Feelings and emotions can be expressed quite easily in Thai. There are many adjectives that describe feelings which can go after nouns. For example ฉันหิว.
Ryan “I’m hungry.”
Pim And you know, in Thai you can often leave out the subject of the sentence if it is obvious. So if you are speaking to someone, you can just say one word, หิว hǐu, and it will be understood that you mean “I’m hungry”.
Ryan In this way, it is very common to hear one-word sentences when people are talking about how they feel at the present moment. So If I wanted to say “I’m bored” I could just say...
Pim bùuea
Ryan Or to say “I’m scared” it would be...
Pim gluua
Ryan And asking somebody if they feel a certain way is just as simple, right?
Pim châi láaeo khâ. That’s right. If you are speaking casually to someone all you need to do is add the question word ไหม after the feeling adjective. For example หิวไหม
Ryan “Are you hungry?” And of course you can make the sentence sound more polite or formal by adding the subject and a polite ending particle. In that case, “Are you hungry?” would be...
Pim คุณหิวไหมคะ
Ryan Now bùuea can mean “bored”, but it is also used in a different sense isn’t it?
Pim Yes. bùuea can mean “bored”, but it can also mean “annoyed” or “frustrated”. For example, if somebody keeps pestering you, you might say เบื่อคนนี้เลย
Ryan “I’m so sick of this person.” How about we go over some of the other common feelings. What is “happy”?
Pim ดีใจ
Ryan How about “sad”?
Pim เสียใจ
Ryan What’s “angry”?
Pim There are two that you can use for “angry”, โกรธ or โมโห
Ryan OK, so if “hungry” was หิว, what is “thirsty”?
Pim หิวน้ำ
Ryan So that’s just like saying “hungry for water”.
Pim Yep. Pretty easy to remember, huh? And actually a lot of the time when we want to say “hungry” we say หิวข้าว.
Ryan “hungry for rice”
Pim But it doesn’t just mean rice. หิวข้าว can mean you are hungry for a meal or real food. If I said ฉันหิวข้าวจังเลย, and you give me an extra-large supreme pizza I will be happy. But if I say ฉันหิวข้าวจังเลย and you give me one cookie I will not be happy.
Ryan But what if it’s a giant cookie?
Pim Maybe then I’d just feel งง
Ryan What is งง?
Pim “confused”

Hello xixi,

Thank you. กัน is usually mean "together" or "with more than one person". When you speak this sentence you often speak it among more than one person, that why we add กัน in the sentence. Also กัน refer to many things, this sentence show supprising of so many stuff around or a house being massy and make mom say this to her children. Please let me know if you have any future questions. I will be glad to help.

Have a good day.

Hi,

as somebody already complained, its not very good for learning when this Ryan's pronunciation is not quite correct always. In this chapter for example the word "เครื่อง".

I don't mind whether the teacher is thai or non-thai as long as the quality is good.

Thank you.

Hello D.D.

Thank you for comment. When thǎawy is follow by adjective "mài"some where after, it's usually means "to get something brand new". There are a few common used of thǎawy, such as "thǎawy-rót" means to back up a vihecle / thǎawy-lǎng means "move backward" / dooen thǎawy-lǎng " to walk backward". Hope that helps. Please feel free to let me know if you have any questions. I will be glad to help.

Have a nice day.

Hello Steve,

Thank you very much. We really sorry that some words are not include. I would recommend you to put Thai sentences to Thai2English dictionary or find words by words using dictionary on our website. Yes , "mâi yàak àan nǎng-sǔue láaeo" means " I don't want to study any more. This is a literal translation mâi ........láaeo don't want to ....... anymore. yàak to want àan to read nǎng-sǔue book. láaeo means "already or and then(in some context)". Please feel free to let me know if you have any questions. I will be glad to help.

Have a nice day.

One of the biggest problems I have found in trying to learn from your lessons is that some of the words are not translated and the language is not translated word for word. For instance: óoi...bùuea. mâi yàak àan nǎng-sǔue láaeo. Okay, we no he is bored, and we know he does not want something. aan nang-sue laaeo however is not explained. You say it means that he does not want to study anymore. I guess "nang-sue" means to study, what does aan mean? The word laaeo is used often in many different context can you explain?

Why is there a non-Thai person doing the dialogue?

His pronunciation is not very good and it makes it hard to learn how to pronounce the Thai words.

As the lesson is now, I can only use it for reading practice.
