| POST CONVERSATION BANTER |
| Ryan “Ghost Panda” sounds like it must be a comedy. |
| Pim Yeah, it probably is. But you should be careful not to joke around about ghosts with your Thai friends. |
| Ryan Why is that? |
| Pim We take ghosts very seriously in Thailand. |
| Ryan So if I don’t know how something got moved around in my apartment and I say “Maybe a ghost did it”... |
| Pim You’d probably end up scaring your Thai friend for real. |
| Ryan I see. Do Thai ghosts act any different than Western ghosts? |
| Pim Well actually we have many different types of ghosts. For example, there is the “phǐi-am” that will sit on your chest and cause discomfort while you sleep. |
| Ryan That doesn’t sound very fun. |
| Pim Then there is the “phǐi-grà-sǔue”. It has the face of a beautiful woman. |
| Ryan That doesn’t sound too bad. |
| Pim But the “phǐi-grà-sǔue” doesn’t have a body. There is just a floating head with some internal organs hanging down. |
| Ryan OK, I take that back. I don’t want to meet a “phǐi-grà-sǔue”. Pii-phaaen-daa sounds much safer. Now let’s move on to the vocabulary. |

| VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE |
| Ryan Let's have a closer look at the usuage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson. |
| Pim เหรอ rǒoe |
| Ryan This means “really?” It is used in sentences where you are asking for a confirmation. But it is also used just as commonly for rhetorical questions or statements where the speaker is expressing surprise or disbelief. |
| Pim That’s right. เหรอ can come at the end of the sentence, or it can go after the verb. For example, เขาพูดว่าฉันสวยเหรอ |
| Ryan “He really said that I’m beautiful?” Here it comes at the end of the sentence. But it also works when put after the verb. |
| Pim เขาพูดเหรอว่าฉันสวย |
| Ryan This also means “He really said that I’m beautiful?” Can we hear the two different versions again? |
| Pim Sure. เขาพูดว่าฉันสวยเหรอ (pause) เขาพูดเหรอว่าฉันสวย |
| Ryan The next phrase is... |
| Pim แค่นี้นะ khâae níi ná |
| Ryan This is a very convenient phrase to use when you are talking on the telephone and want to end the conversation. |
| Pim แค่ khâae means “only” or “just”, and นี้ níi means “this”. The particle นะ ná is used here to soften the phrase so it doesn’t sound too abrupt or demanding. |
| Ryan So it basically translates as “that’s all”, as in “That’s all I had to talk about for now.” Can we hear it one more time? Listeners, please repeat after khru Pim. |

| Ryan “That’s all.” But luckily for you that’s not all for this lesson. We still have the grammar section. |

| Ryan The focus of today’s grammar is the present continuous tense, or how to say that an action is happening right now. |
| Pim There are two basic ways to construct a sentence in the present continuous tense. And there is also a third way which is just a combination of both methods. |
| Ryan OK, so what’s the first method. |
| Pim All you need to do is put the adverb กำลัง gam-lang directly before the verb. For example, ฉันกำลังกินข้าว. |
| Ryan “I’m eating a meal.” So the verb here is กิน, which means “to eat”. When we change it to กำลังกิน it means “eating”. and this will work with any verb, won’t it? |
| Pim Sure. “To walk” is เดิน. So, “I’m walking” would be ฉันกำลังเดิน. |
| Ryan Well, that sounds easy enough. What’s the second method? |
| Pim The second method is to put the verb อยู่ yùu after the action verb. |
| Ryan Doesn’t อยู่ yùu usually mean “to exist” or “to be located” somewhere? |
| Pim It does, but here it indicates that the subject is in the middle of performing the action. Also, if there is an object of the verb, then อยู่ yùu will come after the object in the sentence. For example, ฉันกินข้าวอยู่ |
| Ryan “I’m in the middle of eating a meal.” And this works with any ver as well, right. |
| Pim Of course. ทำการบ้าน means “to do homework”. So if you are in the middle of doing your homework you can say ทำการบ้านอยู่ |
| Ryan And didn’t we see this pattern in the conversation as a question? |
| Pim We sure did. The most common way to ask “What are you doing?” is ทำอะไรอยู่ |
| Ryan Ok, and you said we could mix these two together as well? |
| Pim Yes. You can place กำลัง gam-lang before the verb and อยู่ yùu after the verb. Both of them together increases the emphasis on the fact that the action is happening right now. For example, ฉันกำลังกินข้าวอยู่ |
| Ryan “I’m right in the middle of eating a meal.” OK, can we get a quick recap? What are the three different ways to say “I’m eating now”. |
| Pim ฉันกำลังกินข้าว (pause) ฉันกินข้าวอยู่ (pause) ฉันกำลังกินข้าวอยู่ |
| Ryan And how do we ask someone “What are you doing?” |
| Pim This kind of question sounds better if we make it polite, so women should say คุณทำอะไรอยู่คะ and men should say... |
| Ryan คุณทำอะไรอยู่ครับ |
