Ryan I want to be a flight attendant. But I haven't yet consulted with my parents about it. I don't know whether they will allow me to or not.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Ryan So, khru Pim, I’ve heard that university graduations are a pretty big deal in Thailand.
Pim Yes, they certainly are. That’s because at the graduation ceremony a member of the royal family is present to personally hand out each diploma to the graduates.
Ryan Wow! That must be pretty exciting.
Pim It is. For most people it is the closest they’ll ever get to the royalty in their whole life.
Ryan And which member of the royal family did you get to meet at your graduation ceremony?
Pim Oh, I got to receive my diploma from Phra Thêep.
Ryan That’s great. But I bet a lot of the listeners don’t know who that is because we don’t use that name in English.
Pim Oh, yeah. In English she is called Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn, or just Princess Sirindhorn for short. Her full title in Thai is really long too, so Thais like to call her Phra Thêep for short, which means “Princess Angel”.
Ryan That’s quite a lovely nickname. OK, now let’s move on to the vocabulary.

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Ryan Let's have a closer look at the usuage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson.
Pim จัง jang
Ryan This is an adverb meaning “quite”. It is put after adjectives or verbs to strengthen their impact. For example,
Pim วันนี้ร้อนจัง
Ryan “It’s quite hot today.” How would you say “It’s quite delicious”?
Pim นี่อร่อยจัง
Ryan OK and the next phrase is...
Pim ดีไหม dii mǎi
Ryan This phrase literally means “Is it good?”
Pim It is used right after making a suggestion as a way to ask for confirmation.
Ryan In English we’d probably say “Sound good?” or “Does that sound good to you?” So for example, if I wanted to say “Does watching TV sound good to you?” it would be...
Pim ดูทีวีดีไหมคะ
Ryan And the last phrase is...
Pim ไม่รู้ว่า...หรือเปล่า mâi rúu wâa...rǔue bplàao
Ryan So this phrase has a head and a tail, and you have to put some sort of statement in the middle. The first part ไม่รู้ว่า means “don’t know that”.
Pim And the last part หรือเปล่า means “or not”. So with something in the middle we can construct a sentence meaning “I don’t know if (some statement) is true or not.”
For example, ฉันไม่รู้ว่านี่อร่อยหรือเปล่าค่ะ means...
Ryan “I don’t know if this is delicious or not”. OK, let’s move along to the grammar section.
LESSON FOCUS
Ryan The focus of today’s grammar is using mâi dâi to say that an action didn’t happen.
Pim We have previously learned that putting ไม่ได้ mâi dâai after a verb means that the action can’t be performed. For example, ฉันไปสุโขทัยไม่ได้
Ryan “I can’t go to Sukhothai.” ไป is the verb “to go”, สุโขทัย, a place, is the object of the verb, and ไม่ได้ at the end means “can’t do it”.
Pim However, when we place ไม่ได้ mâi dâi in front of the verb, the meaning is entirely different. ไม่ได้ mâi dâi before a verb means “didn’t do”.
Ryan OK, so ไม่ได้ verb means “didn’t do” that verb, and verb ไม่ได้ means “can’t do” that verb.
Pim Rght, so if I said ฉันไม่ได้ไปสุโขทัย it means...
Ryan “I didn’t go to Sukhothai.” Now let’s hear just the verb phrases “didn’t go” and “can’t go” again, and listen carefully to the length of the vowels.
Pim ไม่ได้ไป (pause) ไปไม่ได้
Ryan Did you hear the difference? When ไม่ได้ is before the verb, meaning “didn’t do” ได้ is said as a short syllable. And when ไม่ได้ is after the verb, meaning “can’t do” ได้ is said as a long syllable.
Pim How about another example. Remember that “to do homework” is ทำการบ้าน. Can you guess how to say “I didn’t do my homework”?
Ryan ผมไม่ได้ทำการบ้าน
Pim Very good. Now maybe you didn’t do your homework yet, but you are intending to do it sometime in the future. If we add the word ยัง in front of ไม่ได้ it means “didn’t do yet”. So using the previous example, how would you say “I didn’t do my homework yet”?
Ryan ผมยังไม่ได้ทำการบ้าน
Pim That’s right.
Ryan So we use ยังไม่ได้ for “didn’t do yet” when it’s something we plan on doing or expect to happen in the future. Eating is something that I plan on doing everyday. So if someone asks if I’ve eaten, I’d answer with “I haven’t eaten yet.”, which is...
Pim ยังไม่ได้กินข้าว
Ryan Ok, let’s review. What is “I can’t go to Sukhothai”?
Pim ฉันไปสุโขทัยไม่ได้
Ryan Now “I didn’t go to Sukhothai.”
Pim ฉันไม่ได้ไปสุโขทัย
Ryan And finally “I didn’t go to Sukhothai yet.”
Pim ฉันยังไม่ได้ไปสุโขทัย
OUTRO

Listeners, do you hang your diploma or a photo of yourself receiving a diploma on the wall of your home like Thai people do?

สวัสดีค่ะ Stefie,

Thank you very much for your kind join our lesson activity. I think many people who work in an office hang their diploma. But I don’t hang mine in the house. And I also don’t know any friends who do that. in Thai is คิดว่า หลายคนที่ทำงานในสำนักงานจะวางวุฒิบัตรไว้บนโต๊ะทำงาน แต่ฉันและหลายคนที่ฉันรู้จักไม่แขวนไว้บนฝาบ้าน

ตาก is use for hanging cloths and other thing in the sunlight.

Hello Ran,

Yes, you are right. It does sound funny how we say it but that is really how we speak. Actually, it means that the chicken "khúi-khìia" “pecking” then stop and "hǎa aa-hǎan" then repeated again over and over.

Have a nice day.

Dear Jan,

Thank you for your comment. I believe the sentences for this video came from a list of English sentences that get translated into all the languages that we do. So, yes, the crow is pecking, and looking for food too.

Have a good day,

In sample sentences is this

นกกาคุ้ยเขี่ยหาอาหาร

nók-gaa khúi-khìia hǎa aa-hǎan

"The black crow is looking for something to

eat." But the crow is คุ้ยเขี่ย so it should be pecking in the English version. Makes it easier for us Thai amateurs:wink:
