| POST CONVERSATION BANTER |
| Ryan So khruu Pim, it’s very easy to tell who is a university student in Thailand isn’t it? |
| Pim It sure is. You can instantly recognize university students by their uniform. |
| Ryan That’s right. Now, coming from the US, where college students usually dress very, very casually, the concept of wearing a uniform to go to class took a little getting used to. |
| Pim So you wore a uniform when you studied in Thailand? |
| Ryan Yep, but it was just a pair of black slacks and a white short-sleeved buttoned shirt. It was actually pretty comfortable. But the uniforms of some of the women students didn’t look so comfortable. Isn’t it hard to breathe wearing such a tight outfit? |
| Pim Well, I wouldn’t know because I always wore my uniform more modestly. But a lot of young people these days will do anything to appear fashionable. |
| Ryan And that’s probably true about any country. OK, on to the vocabulary. |

| VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE |
| Ryan Let's have a closer look at the usuage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson. |
| Pim ดีจังเลย dii jang looei |
| Ryan This means “How great!” or “That really is good.” You hear this a lot when somebody gets good news or a pleasant surprise. |
| Pim ดี dii is an adjective that means“good”, and จัง jang is an intensifier that means “really”, “so”, or “very”. It intensifies the adjective. Then เลย looei is added for emphasis to make the statement sound definitive. It’s like saying “indeed” or “certainly”. |
| Ryan Can we use this same pattern with other adjectives? |
| Pim Sure. For example, if you were inside an air-conditioned shopping center and stepped out into the tropical mid-day heat, you could say ร้อนจังเลย, “It’s so hot!” |
| Or if you saw a name brand handbag with an incredibly high price, you could say แพงจังเลย, “How expensive!” |
| Ryan Ok, let’s get those three phrases again. This time, listeners, please repeat after khru Pim. “How great!” |

| Ryan Ok let’s look at one more phrase, which is... |
| Pim อยู่ทางขวามือ yùu thaang khwǎa-muue |
| Ryan “It’s located on the right-hand side.” This is a preposition starting with อยู่ yùu , the verb “to be located” and then ทาง thaang meaning “way” or “path”. Finally, ขวามือ khwǎa-muue which literally means “right-hand”. |
| Pim Exactly, ขวา is “right” and มือ is “hand”. We can change this expression to say “It’s on the left-hand side” by making it อยู่ทางซ้ายมือ yùu thaang sáai-muue. |
| Ryan So we’d use this when giving directions for something, and we’ll talk more about directions as the focus of this lesson. |

| Ryan The focus of today's lesson is giving directions. We have learned before how to ask where something is located with the expression ...อยู่ที่ไหน ...yùu thîi nǎi. Now let’s look at how to understand the answer that you might get back. ‘ |
| Pim First off is “Go this way” (ไปทางนี้ bpai thaang níi) or “Go that way” (ไปทางนั้น bpai thaang nán). You might also hear เดินตรงไป dooen dtrong bpai (“Go straight”). |
| Ryan OK, so if I’m really lucky the place I’m going to can just be pointed out with ไปทางนี้ or ไปทางนั้น “Go this way” or “Go that way”. But it’s far more likely that I’d need to turn at some point. So how do we say “to turn”? |
| Pim The verb “to turn” is เลี้ยว líiao. So you will likely hear เลี้ยวขวา líiao khwǎa (“Turn right”) or เลี้ยวซ้าย líiao sáai (“Turn left”). |
| Ryan Can we hear those again? Listeners please repeat after khru Pim. “Turn right” |

| Ryan “Turn left”. |

| Ryan Good, but khru Pim, how do we know where to turn? Is there a way to say “turn at the intersection”? |
| Pim Well, in Thai the word for “intersection” depends on how many streets intersect. A three-way intersection is called สามแยก sǎam-yâaek. A four-way intersection is called สี่แยก sìi-yâaek. And in some places, you might also encounter a ห้าแยก hâa-yâaek . |
| Ryan “five-way intersection” |
| Pim Right. And we use the preposition ที่ thîi , meaning “at”, when saying where to turn. So the whole sentence might be เลี้ยวขวาที่สี่แยก líiao khwǎa thîi sìi-yâaek. |
| Ryan “Turn right at the four-way intersection.” |
| Pim Correct. Now can you guess how to say “Turn left at the three-way intersection”? |
| Ryan Is it เลี้ยวซ้ายที่สามแยก |
| Pim Very good! Now let’s try something more like a real example. Ask me where the bank is. |
| Ryan OK. ธนาคารอยู่ที่ไหนครับ |
| Pim ไปทางนี้ค่ะ แล้วเลี้ยวซ้ายที่สามแยก มีธนาคารอยู่ทางขวามือระหว่างร้านอาหารกับร้านกาแฟ |
| Could you understand all the directions? Let’s break it down. First I said ไปทางนี้ |
| Ryan “Go this way.” |
| Pim แล้วเลี้ยวซ้ายที่สามแยก |
| Ryan “Then turn left at the three-way intersection.” |
| Pim มีธนาคารอยู่ทางขวามือ |
| Ryan “There’s a bank on your right-hand side...” |
| Pim ระหว่างร้านอาหารกับร้านกาแฟ |
| Ryan “...between a restaurant and a coffee shop.” That’s a good sentence to use for practice. Can we hear the whole thing one more time with a few spaces in the middle so our listeners can repeat after you? |
| Pim Sure. ไปทางนี้ค่ะ (pause) แล้วเลี้ยวซ้ายที่สามแยก (pause) มีธนาคารอยู่ทางขวามือ (pause) ระหว่างร้านอาหารกับร้านกาแฟ |
