INTRODUCTION
Jessi: Top 25 Thai Questions You Need to Know - Lesson 10: "How is the Thai food?" in Thai. In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll master a common question for Thai learners, and then learn how to answer like a native speaker. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then, through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.
In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question "How is it?" when talking about food. In Thai, this is...
Pim: bpen yang-ngai khá
Jessi: The first word in the question "How is it?" (when talking about food) is...
Pim: bpen
Jessi: means something like "to be able to, to be, alive" in English.
Pim: (Slow, by syllable) bpen
Jessi: Listen again and repeat.
Pim: bpen
{Pause}
Jessi: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question "How is it?" (when talking about food) is...
Pim: yang-ngai
Jessi: meaning "how"
Pim: (Slow, by syllable) yang-ngai
Jessi: Now repeat.
Pim: yang-ngai
{Pause}
Jessi: Listen to the first two words of the question and repeat.
Pim: bpen yang-ngai
{Pause}
Jessi: And after that is
Pim: khá
Jessi: a polite ending particle for female speakers for questions and requests
Pim: (Slow, by syllable) khá
Jessi: Now repeat.
Pim: khá
{Pause}
Jessi: Now listen to the entire question and repeat.
Pim: bpen yang-ngai khá
{pause}
Jessi: Note that this question is set as how a female speaker would say it, if you are a male speaker, change the khá to khráp. You will hear this common question again and again throughout your studies. Master the following pattern and responses to the question "How is it?" when talking about food.
Pim: à-ràwy khà
Jessi: "It's delicious." Again, slowly. Repeat the phrase.
Pim: (Slow) à-ràwy khà
{pause}
Jessi: Let's break it down from the beginning. The first word is...
Pim: à-ràwy
Jessi: means "delicious"
Pim: (Slow, by syllable) à-ràwy
Jessi: Now repeat.
Pim: à-ràwy
{Pause}
Jessi: And next…
Pim: khà
Jessi: a particle added at the end of the sentence or phrase in order to increase the level of politeness when the speaker is a female.
Pim: (Slow, by syllable) khà
Jessi: Now repeat.
Pim: khà
{Pause}
Jessi: Now listen to the speaker say "It's delicious." and then repeat.
Pim: à-ràwy khà
{Pause}
Jessi: This is how you say “It's delicious” if you are a female; if you are a male, simply replace the word khá with the word khráp. Now, listen to the entire response as you would say it if you’re a male, and repeat.
Pim: à-ràwy khráp
Jessi: To use a different phrase, replace "delicious" with "spicy."
Pim: phèt
Jessi: "spicy"
Pim: (slow) phèt (regular) phèt
Jessi: Listen to the phrase again, this time with "spicy."
Pim: phèt khà
Jessi: It mostly stays the same, simply replace "delicious." Say, "It's spicy."
{pause}
Pim: phèt khà
Jessi: Remember, this is how to answer the question if you’re a female. If you’re male, use khráp instead of khâ. Let’s try it with a masculine version. To expand on the pattern,, replace "spicy" with "sweet."
Pim: wǎan
Jessi: "sweet"
Pim: (slow) wǎan (regular) wǎan
Jessi: Listen to the phrase again, this time with "sweet."
Pim: wǎan khráp
Jessi: Simply replace the word for "spicy" and the sentence masculine. Say, "It's sweet."
{pause}
Pim: wǎan khráp
Jessi: To expand on the pattern, replace "sweet" with "sour."
Pim: bprîiao
Jessi: "sour"
Pim: (slow) bprîiao (regular) bprîiao
Jessi: Listen to the phrase again, this time with "sour."
Pim: bprîiao khráp
Jessi: Replace the word for "sweet" and make the rest of the sentence masculine. Say, "It's sour."
{pause}
Pim: bprîiao khráp
Jessi: Now it's time for a quiz. Imagine you're visiting Thailand and someone asks for your opinion of the food. You’re a female speaker and you want to say it's delicious. Respond to the question.
Pim: bpen yang-ngai khá (five seconds) à-ràwy khà
Jessi: Now, you’re a female speaker and you want to want to say that it's spicy. Respond to the question.
Pim: bpen yang-ngai khá (five seconds) phèt khà
Jessi: Now, you’re a male speaker and you want to want to say that it's sweet. Answer the speaker's question.
Pim: bpen yang-ngai khá (five seconds) wǎan khráp
Jessi: Now, you’re a male speaker and you want to want to say that it's sour. Respond to the question.
Pim: bpen yang-ngai khá (five seconds) bprîiao khráp
Jessi: Now you want to know what that person thinks of the meal. Ask the feminine version of that question.
(5 seconds)
Pim: bpen yang-ngai khá
Jessi: This is the end of Lesson 10.
