Jessi: Note that this question is set as how a female speaker would say it, if you are a male speaker, change the final khá to khráp. You will hear this common question again and again throughout your studies. Master the following pattern and responses to the question "Do you have any brothers or sisters?"
Pim: dì-chǎn mii phîi-sǎao khâ
Jessi: "I have an older sister." Again, slowly. Repeat the phrase.
Pim: (Slow) dì-chǎn mii phîi-sǎao khâ
{pause}
Jessi: Let's break it down from the beginning. The first word...
Pim: dì-chǎn
Jessi: means "I" used by females
Pim: (Slow, by syllable) dì-chǎn
Jessi: Now repeat.
Pim: dì-chǎn
{Pause}

Jessi: And next...
Pim: khâ
Jessi: a particle added at the end of the sentence or phrase in order to increase the level of politeness when the speaker is female
Pim: (Slow, by syllable) khâ
Jessi: Now repeat.
Pim: khâ
{Pause}
Jessi: Listen to the speaker say "I have an older sister." and then repeat.
Pim: dì-chǎn mii phîi-sǎao khâ
{Pause}
Jessi: This is how you say "I have an older sister.” if you are a female; if you are a male, simply replace the word dì-chǎn with the word phǒm, meaning “I” in English. Remember to also change the final khá to khráp. Now, listen to the entire response as you would say it if you were a male, and repeat.
Pim: phǒm mii phîi-sǎao khráp
Jessi: To use a different phrase, replace "older sister" with "older brother."
Pim: phîi-chaai
Jessi: "older brother"
Pim: (slow) phîi-chaai (regular) phîi-chaai
Jessi: Listen to the phrase again, this time with "older brother."
Pim: dì-chǎn mii phîi-chaai khâ
Jessi: It mostly stays the same, simply replace "older sister." Say, "I have an older brother."
{pause}
Pim: dì-chǎn mii phîi-chaai khâ
Jessi: Remember, this is how to answer you question if you’re a female. If you’re male, use phǒm instead of dì-chǎn. And also change the final khá to khráp. So now, let’s try it with a masculine version. To expand on the pattern, "older brother" with "younger brother."
Pim: náawng-chaai
Jessi: "younger brother"
Pim: (slow) náawng-chaai (regular) náawng-chaai
Jessi: Listen to the phrase again, this time with "younger brother."
Pim: phǒm mii náawng-chaai khráp
Jessi: Replace the word for "older brother" and use the masculine speech. Say, "I have a younger brother."
{pause}
Pim: phǒm mii náawng-chaai khráp
Jessi: To use a different phrase, replace "younger brother" with "younger sister."
Pim: náawng-sǎao
Jessi: "younger sister"
Pim: (slow) náawng-sǎao (regular) náawng-sǎao
Jessi: Listen to the phrase again, this time with "younger sister."
Pim: phǒm mii náawng-sǎao khráp
Jessi: Replace the word for "younger brother" and use the masculine speech again. Say, "I have a younger sister."
Pim: phǒm mii náawng-sǎao khráp
{pause}
Jessi: Now it's time for a quiz. Imagine you're visiting Thailand and someone asks you if you have any brothers or sisters. You’re a female speaker and you want to say that you have an older sister. Respond to the question.
Pim: khun mii phîi-chaai náawng-chaai rǔue phîi-sǎao náawng-sǎao mǎi khá (five seconds) dì-chǎn mii phîi-sǎao khâ

Jessi: Now, you're a male speaker and you have a younger sister. Respond to the question.
Pim: khun mii phîi-chaai náawng-chaai rǔue phîi-sǎao náawng-sǎao mǎi khá (five seconds) phǒm mii náawng-sǎao khráp
