Jessi: Top 25 Thai Questions You Need to Know - Lesson 2: "Where are you from?" in Thai. In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll master a common question for Thai learners, and then learn how to answer like a native speaker. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then, through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.
In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question "Where are you from?" In Thai, this is...

Jessi: Listen again and repeat.
Pim: khun
{Pause}
Jessi: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is-
Pim: maa
Jessi: meaning "to come"

Jessi: Now repeat.
Pim: maa

{Pause}

Pim: khun maa jàak thîi-nǎi
Jessi: And last we have...
Pim: khá
Jessi: which is a polite ending particle for female speakers for questions and requests
Pim: (Slow, by syllable) khá
Jessi: Now repeat.
Pim: khá
{Pause}
Jessi: Listen to the entire question and repeat.
Pim: khun maa jàak thîi-nǎi khá
{pause}
Jessi: Remember to change the final khá to khráp if you’re a male speaker.
Jessi: You will hear this common question again and again throughout your studies. Master the following pattern and responses to the question "Where are you from?"
Pim: dì-chǎn maa jàak bprà-thêet sà-hà-rát à-mee-rí-gaa khâ
Jessi: "I'm from the US." You’ll hear it one more time, slowly. Repeat the phrase.
Pim: (Slow) dì-chǎn maa jàak bprà-thêet sà-hà-rát à-mee-rí-gaa khâ
{pause}
Jessi: Let's break it down from the beginning. The first word...
Pim: dì-chǎn
Jessi: means "I" used by female
Pim: (Slow, by syllable) dì-chǎn
Jessi: Now repeat.
Pim: dì-chǎn
{Pause}
Jessi: And next is...
Pim: maa
Jessi: meaning "to come."
Pim: (Slow, by syllable) maa
Jessi: Now repeat.
Pim: maa
{Pause}
Jessi: And next ...
Pim: jàak
Jessi: meaning "from."
Pim: (Slow, by syllable) jàak
Jessi: Now repeat.

{Pause}
Jessi: Next is...
Pim: bprà-thêet sà-hà-rát à-mee-rí-gaa
Jessi: mean "the US"
Pim: (Slow, by syllable) bprà-thêet sà-hà-rát à-mee-rí-gaa
Jessi: Now repeat.
Pim: bprà-thêet sà-hà-rát à-mee-rí-gaa
Jessi: And next…
Pim: khâ
Jessi: which is the particle added at the end of the sentence or phrase in order to increase the level of politeness when the speaker is a female.
Pim: khâ
Jessi: Now repeat.
Pim: khâ
{Pause}
Jessi: Listen to the female speaker say "I'm from the US." and then repeat.
Pim: dì-chǎn maa jàak bprà-thêet sà-hà-rát à-mee-rí-gaa khâ
{Pause}
Jessi: This is how you say "I'm from the US.” if you are a female; if you are a male, simply replace the word dì-chǎn with the word phǒm, meaning “I” in English. Also, don’t forget to change the final particle.
Jessi: To expand the pattern, replace "the US" with "England."
Pim: bprà-thêet ang-grìt
Jessi: "England"
Pim: (slow) bprà-thêet ang-grìt (regular) bprà-thêet ang-grìt
Jessi: Listen to the phrase again, this time with "England."
Pim: dì-chǎn maa jàak bprà-thêet ang-grìt khâ
Jessi: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace the US. Say "I'm from England."
{pause}
Pim: dì-chǎn maa jàak bprà-thêet ang-grìt khâ
Jessi: Remember, this is how to answer the question if you’re a female. If you’re male, use phǒm instead of dì-chǎn. Now let’s try it with a male version.
Jessi: To expand on the pattern, replace "England" with "Germany." In Thai, this is
Pim: bprà-thêet yooe-rá-man
Jessi: "Germany"
Pim: (slow) bprà-thêet yooe-rá-man (regular) bprà-thêet yooe-rá-man
Jessi: Listen to the phrase again, this time with "Germany."
Pim: phǒm maa jàak bprà-thêet yooe-rá-man khráp
Jessi: We replaced the word "England" with "Germany." and use the male version of the sentence. Say "I'm from Germany."
{pause}
Pim: phǒm maa jàak bprà-thêet yooe-rá-man khráp
Jessi: To expand on the pattern, replace "Germany”with "France."
Pim: bprà-thêet fà-ràng-sèet
Jessi: "France"
Pim: (slow) bprà-thêet fà-ràng-sèet (regular) bprà-thêet fà-ràng-sèet
Jessi: Listen to the phrase again, this time with "France."
Pim: phǒm maa jàak bprà-thêet fà-ràng-sèet khráp
Jessi: We replaced the word "Germany" and use the male version of the sentence. Say "I'm from France."
{pause}
Pim: phǒm maa jàak bprà-thêet fà-ràng-sèet khráp
Jessi: Now it's time for a quiz. Imagine you're visiting Thailand and a female speaker asks you where you're from. You're a female speaker from the U.S.A. Respond to the question.

Pim: khun maa jàak thîi-nǎi khá (five seconds) phǒm maa jàak bprà-thêet yooe-rá-man khráp
Jessi: Now imagine you're a male speaker from France. Respond to the question.
Pim: khun maa jàak thîi-nǎi khá (five seconds) phǒm maa jàak bprà-thêet fà-ràng-sèet khráp
Jessi: Now you want to ask that person where they're from. Ask the feminine version of that question.
(5 seconds)
Pim: khun maa jàak thîi-nǎi khá
{pause}
