INTRODUCTION
Jessi: Top 25 Thai Questions You Need to Know - Lesson 21: "Are you hungry?" in Thai. In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll master a common question for Thai learners, and then learn how to answer like a native speaker. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then, through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.
In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question "Are you hungry?" In Thai, this is...
Pim: khun hǐu mǎi khá
Jessi: The first word in the question is...
Pim: khun
Jessi: meaning "you" in English.
Pim: (Slow, by syllable) khun
Jessi: Listen again and repeat.
Pim: khun
{Pause}
Jessi: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is-
Pim: hǐu
Jessi: meaning "to be hungry"
Pim: (Slow, by syllable) hǐu
Jessi: Now repeat.
Pim: hǐu
{Pause}
Jessi: Listen to the first two words of the question and repeat.
Pim: khun hǐu
{Pause}
Jessi: And after that...
Pim: mǎi
Jessi: a particle indicating a yes/no question
Pim: (Slow, by syllable) mǎi
Jessi: Now repeat.
Pim: mǎi
{Pause}
Jessi: Listen to the first three words of the question and repeat.
Pim: khun hǐu mǎi
{Pause}
Jessi: And after that...
Pim: khá
Jessi: a polite ending particle for female speakers for questions and requests
Pim: (Slow, by syllable) khá
Jessi: Now repeat.
Pim: khá
{Pause}
Jessi: Now listen to the entire question and repeat.
Pim: khun hǐu mǎi khá
{pause}
Jessi: Remember to change the final khá to khráp if you're a male speaker. Now, master the following pattern and responses to the question "Are you hungry?"
Pim: dì-chǎn hǐu nít-nàawy khâ
Jessi: "Yes, I'm a little hungry." You’ll hear it one more time, slowly. Repeat the phrase.
Pim: (Slow) dì-chǎn hǐu nít-nàawy khâ
{pause}
Jessi: Let's break it down from the beginning. The first word is...
Pim: dì-chǎn
Jessi: meaning "I" and it's used by females
Pim: (Slow, by syllable) dì-chǎn
Jessi: Now repeat.
Pim: dì-chǎn
{Pause}
Jessi: And next is...
Pim: hǐu
Jessi: meaning "to be hungry."
Pim: (Slow, by syllable) hǐu
Jessi: Now repeat.
Pim: hǐu
{Pause}
Jessi: Next is...
Pim: nít-nàawy
Jessi: meaning "a little."
Pim: (Slow, by syllable) nít-nàawy
Jessi: Now repeat.
Pim: nít-nàawy
{Pause}
Jessi: And last is…
Pim: khâ
Jessi: a particle added at the end of the sentence or phrase in order to increase the level of politeness when the speaker is female
Pim: (Slow, by syllable) khâ
Jessi: Now repeat.
Pim: khâ
{Pause}
Jessi: Listen to the speaker say "Yes, I'm a little hungry." and then repeat.
Pim: dì-chǎn hǐu nít-nàawy khâ
{Pause}
Jessi: This is how you would say "Yes, I'm a little hungry." if you are a female; if you are a male, simply replace the word dì-chǎn with the word phǒm, and remember to change the final syllable. Now, listen to the entire response as you would say it if you were a male, and repeat.
Pim: phǒm hǐu nít-nàawy khráp
{Pause}
Jessi: To use a different phrase, replace "a little" with "very."
Pim: mâak
Jessi: "very"
Pim: (slow) mâak (regular) mâak
Jessi: Listen to the phrase again, this time with "very."
Pim: dì-chǎn hǐu mâak khâ
Jessi: You’ll see that it’s almost the same. Simply the phrase for "a little." Say, "Yes, I'm very hungry."
{pause}
Pim: dì-chǎn hǐu mâak khâ
Jessi: Remember, this is how to answer the question if you’re a female. If you’re male, use phǒm instead of dì-chǎn, and remember to change the final syllable. Now let’s try a masculine version.
Jessi: To expand on the pattern, replace "very" with "super."
Pim: sùt-sùt
Jessi: "super"
Pim: (slow) sùt-sùt (regular) sùt-sùt
Jessi: Listen to the phrase again, this time with "super."
Pim: phǒm hǐu sùt-sùt khráp
Jessi: Simply replace the word for "very" and use masculine speech. Say, "Yes, I'm super hungry."
{pause}
Pim: phǒm hǐu sùt-sùt khráp
Jessi: To use a different phrase, replace "super" with "really."
Pim: jang-looei
Jessi: "really"
Pim: (slow) jang-looei (regular) jang-looei
Jessi: Listen to the phrase again, this time with "really."
Pim: phǒm hǐu jang-looei khráp
Jessi: It mostly stays the same, simply replace "super." Say, "Yes, I'm really hungry."
{pause}
Pim: phǒm hǐu jang-looei khráp
Jessi: Now it's time for a quiz. Imagine you're visiting Thailand and someone asks you if you're hungry. You want to answer "Yes, I'm a little hungry." Respond to the question.
Pim: khun hǐu mǎi khá (five seconds) dì-chǎn hǐu nít-nàawy khâ
Jessi: You want to say "Yes, I'm very hungry." Respond to the question.
Pim: khun hǐu mǎi khá (five seconds) dì-chǎn hǐu mâak khâ
Jessi: Now you want to say "Yes, I'm super hungry." Use male speech and answer the speaker's question.
Pim: khun hǐu mǎi khá (five seconds) phǒm hǐu sùt-sùt khráp
Jessi: Now you want to say "Yes, I'm really hungry." Use male speech and respond to the question.
Pim: khun hǐu mǎi khá (five seconds) phǒm hǐu jang-looei khráp
Jessi: Now you want to ask someone if they are hungry. Use female speech and ask the question.
(5 seconds)
Pim: khun hǐu mǎi khá
{pause}
Jessi: This is the end of Lesson 21.
